We Can Do It!
Publication Date: August 2010
Cover Design: The cover, by Estephany, age 15, from the Orange County
Department Education’s Deaf & Hard of Hearing Program at University High School,
is a watercolor interpretation of a famous WWII poster. Deaf and Hard of Hearing students
were provided with art instruction funded by a grant through the Kenneth A. Picerne
Foundation’s Artist Outreach Project. The original “We Can Do It!” poster was first created
in 1942 from a J. Howard Miller photo of Michigan factory worker Geraldine Hoff Doyle as
a way of helping recruit women into the workforce. The cover art represents the spirit of
overcoming adversity and tough times with a ‘can-do’ attitude!
