MAKING. Newtown, PA: Bird & Bull Press, 2011, tall 8vo, quarter leather, cloth
covered boards. 92 pages, 24 illustrations. $ 360.00
One of 120 numbered copies. Floyd McClure (1897–1970) was considered the world’s leading authority
on bamboo. His manuscript for Chinese Handmade Papers, written in I928, laid dormant for 56 years,
along with trunks full of samples of papers for a book he hoped to publish. The manuscript and
samples were discovered by Elaine Koretsky in I984, and in I986 Bird & Bull Press published the
book, which remains one of Henry Morris’s favorites.
Hidden away in the huge carton of samples were 24 photographic color transparencies of I8thcentury
Chinese paintings depicting bamboo papermaking. The films were badly faded with an overall
bluish cast and were considered useless. These transparencies had been loaned to McClure by Dr.
W.B. Pettus, President of the California College in Peking. McClure greatly admired the paintings
and hoped a way could be found to reproduce them in his book. There was no information on the
origin of the transparencies except that they came from an unknown French collector.
When Henry Morris saw the album of 24 paintings of Chinese Bamboo Papermaking, published by
Akademie Verlag in I993, he realized the faded transparencies had been made from the same source.
Thanks to the advanced state of computer color technology these formerly-useless transparencies
have been restored and are shown here in a smaller size. McClure’s chapter “How the Chinese make
paper by hand” is included in an abridged form. It is limited to the portions of his text which illuminate
the scenes portrayed in the relevant paintings.
Chinese Bamboo Papermaking is composed in Dante types, printed letterpress on Zerkall mouldmade
paper and quarter-bound in African goatskin with leather spine label and Japanese cloth sides. Comes
with the prospectus. [107940]
was an artist and author known for producing the last portrait of Napoleon and “Christ Weeping
the letter may have been written in January 1845, not 1844. The Art-Union, a monthly journal, began
publication in 1839 (The New Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature III, 1846). [107640]
with title stamped in blue within a red triangle on front cover, housed in black clamshell
box by Charriere. Not paginated. $ 4,000.00
Signed, Limited Edition, one of 125 copies only on Rives BFK, all signed by the author and artist,
hand set in Janson, lithographs and etchings pulled by the Printmaking Workshop of Bob Blackburn.
Bound by Gerard Charriere. In this play by Harry Kondoleon, “A woman, her husband, and her
husband’s lover go up and down the Riviera only to be disappointed by the Riviera. The dullness of
the Cote D’Azur reveals to these Americans the dullness and impossibility of love . . . they tire of one
another and pursue sex partners at random until they are attacked and consumed by sea dragons.”
Mark Beard’s brilliant illustrations of these “two-dimensional and ironic” characters, in their bathing
suits and sunglasses, in saturated primary colors and his flat presentation, are overwhelming in their
impact of the characters’ vapidity. With such illustrations as Greek temple caryatids folding out to
reveal the Cote d’Azur and paper doll players, Beard’s art inexpressibly moves the viewer to realize
the inevitable crush of the dragon of these pitiable self-centered creatures. A brilliant mixture of wit
and irony with difficult and innovative printmaking techniques producing prints with highly unusual
textures, especially in the final fold out, which has an effect of great richness and mystery. [61433]
Thompson. Merrickville: Greyweathers Press, 2010, 4to, cloth-backed paper covered
boards, paper cover and spine labels. 6, 13 wood cuts, (2) pages. $ 160.00
First edition. One of 100 numbered copies. Wood engravers toiling away at their trade during
the last quarter of the nineteenth century could be forgiven for feeling a touch of despair. Since
the early 1800s, they had practiced a viable trade, with graver in hand over an endgrain block,
cutting illustrations for a healthy proportion of books, newspapers and periodicals. In the 1880s,
they witnessed the advent of photomechanical printing plates and, in direct competition, felt the
ominous rising tide of obsolescence. As this new technology became more efficient, less expensive
and generally accepted over the next twenty years, commercial wood engravers would begin to pack
up their blocks, wrap up their tools and seek other employment. It could well be this very occurrence
that lay behind the discovery, 130 years on, of a collection of nineteenth century engraved boxwood
blocks and, ultimately, the creation of this portfolio.
Beautiful privately printed book featuring thirteen wood engravings from Samuel Smith Kilburn,
Boston, George Matthews, Boston & Montreal F. Archibald. [105925]
98. (Incline Press) Cinamon, Gerald. E R WEISS: THE TYPOGRAPHY OF
AN ARTIST. Oldham: Incline Press, 2011, 4to, slipcase. $ 400.00
First edition. Lovers of beautiful books, elegant design, and clear typography will be thrilled with this
new volume about the book artist, Emil Rudolf Weiss.
Weiss stands high in the pantheon of great book artists that includes William Morris, Bruce Rogers
and Francis Meynell, among others, but because his work was mostly in Germany, he tends to be
less well known in the English speaking world; certainly not much has been written about him or his
work in English since the 1930s. Yet he was sufficiently regarded by Stanley Morison to be a guest
designer for an issue of The Fleuron; another issue of which included an essay by Morison about
Weiss ornaments. His Weiss-Antiqua typeface was particularly popular in the USA, mainly due to
the availability for slug casting through Intertype matrices, and the publicity work of the Bauer Type
Foundry office in New York. Today, most of us have, perhaps unknowingly, seen the digital version
of Weiss roman, if not the original metal version. It remains a popular typeface, particularly in book
work where one of its recent outings was on the dust-jacket of the US edition of The Da Vinci Code,
and the UK edition of Revenge of the Mooncake Vixen.
Jerry Cinamon studied graphic design at the Yale School of Art & Architecture, and first came
across Weiss Initials while working in New York in the early 1960s. He had a long and successful
career working at Penguin books, learning German after his retirement to produce his excellent
biography of Rudolf Koch (Oak Knoll, 2000). [106295]
Stewart, Argonaut and Exile, pp 178–81; O’Day, pp. 35–36). Using a game of euchre as the setting, this
comic ballad, first published in The Overland Monthly, satirized the then popular concept that America
was being ruined by Chinese cheap labor. Unfortunately, Harte’s attempt at satire backfired and the
poem, although a popular success, became a vehicle for fanning the flames of anti-Chinese sentiment
in California and elsewhere. Includes an Introduction by Ina Coolbrith and a Bibliography with Notes
by Robert Ernest Cowan, Librarian of the William Andrews Clark, Jr. Library. Coolbrith’s narrative
of her association with Harte on the Overland Monthlyincludes reminiscences of such rare spirits as
Charles Warren Stoddard and the relationship the three of them shared, She also details the chagrin
Harte felt at the recognition he received for this poem while his other, more worthy things, were less
honored. Frontispiece and other full-page black-and-white illustrations by Phil Little. Text of the
poem printed in black, with large decorative initial at beginning of each verse. Slipcase shows some
Printed in an edition limited to only 20 copies; this copy being one of an even fewer number of largepaper
private press printing in America. (listed in OCLC and NUC, although not as large paper, but not
listed in the NYPL Catalogue of Special and Private Presses). The only book published by this press,
which briefly published a magazine called the Bizarre (1851–52 and 1852–55). Preface and sketch of
the life of Secundus by Hipponax Rosat. The translation of the poem is attributed to Dr. John Nott
(1751–1826); however, according to a February 14, 1866 article in Philadelphia’s Evening Bulletin, since
Nott’s translation as published by another press is completely different, this translation may be by
Rosat. The article also claims that “Hipponax Rosat” is an anagram for the name of “a gentleman
well-known in bibliographical circles.” The NUC identifies this as Joseph Ruppert Paxton, author
and member of the Philadelphia Bar. Library bookplate on which is noted in pencil. Information
on the limitation of this book. Also present is a newspaper article pasted onto front paste-down
(Evening Bulletin, Wednesday, February 14, 1866),which gives a history of the private press movement
Rosenbach books actually written by Rosenbach. This appears to be a trial or variant issue of some
sort as the covers are different and there is a mounted picture of Franklin which is meant to be a title
blue marbled paper. The pages are unopened. [107223]
OCUTS BY ANDREW ANDERSON. (Lower Marston Farm, Risbury): Whittington
Press, 2011, 22 x 15 inches, quarter buckram and paper covered boards, slipcase.
64 pages. $ 536.00
Andrew Andersons astonishing linocuts are an arresting mix of image, lettering and symbolism. The
images show strong influences of his background as an architect with a particular interest in mediaeval
architecture; the lettering brings Eric Gill to mind, but with an added fluency and versatility; and
much of the symbolism comes from his involvement with cathedral and church architecture. He has
written about his work in MATRIX 28, pp. 914.
He combines these three elements with immense skill and with a rare dedication, and yet his
images have an astonishing vibrance and magnetism. Little known or seen over the years, hampered
perhaps because of their size and the artists preoccupation with his architectural work, they appear
here for the first time in a readily accessible form, each with a note by the artist explaining its content
and symbolism.
The large format of A VISION OF ORDER allows most of the prints to be tipped in unfolded.
Like our Posters published in 1996, it will be a monumental volume in its own right, set in a large size
of the Caslon type for which the Press has become renowned. Tom Mayo, who will be doing much
of the printing of this large and unusual project, will be posting a blog giving an illustrated report of
its progress.
FAMOUS LIBRARY PRINCIPALLY OF FINE BINDINGS, RARE EN-
FORMED BY THE LATE MORTIMER SCHIFF, ESQ. OF NEW YORK
CITY. Three volumes. London: Sotheby & Co., 1938, 8vo., stiff green paper wrappers.
554, (12) pages. $ 350.00
Auction catalogues of the library of fine bindings and illustrated books from the library of Mortimer
Schiff (1877–1931), Sotheby, London, March, July, and December 1938 (Blogie III, 23–25; VII, 5–7; XII,
6–9), 2476 lots. Nothing comparable with these bindings had “been seen in London since the Holdford
Sale more than ten years earlier.” The real strength of the library is in the 18th century. Probably
never since the Hamilton Palace Sale have so many examples of the inlaid binding of the period been
offered for sale in London, culminating in Louis Douceur’s emblematically tooled binding on Daphnis
and Chloe and the amazing chinoiserie signed Monnier, the most elaborate binding of the period
known to us. The auction proved to be disastrous for the heirs. The only beneficiaries were collectors
like Lessing J. Rosenwald, who through Rosenbach, found it possible to obtain rare bindings and
illustrated folios for bargain prices (Dickinson, p.282). Each volume illustrated throughout in black
and white and color (121 plates). Front inside hinge broken of volume one and covers and spine loose
from binding; tear in title page with a piece detached. Ink stamp of B.F. Stevens & Brown Ltd. on
ook-jackets
Their T hisTory,
Forms, F and Use
by G. Thomas Tanselle
Book-jackets (or “dust-jackets,”
as they are often called), along
with other detachable book cov-
erings such as slip-cases, have been
regularly used by publishers in the
English-speaking world and some
countries of the European continent
since the early part of the nineteenth
century. Historians of publishing
practices, however, have not accorded
them the scrutiny that one might have expected such a ubiquitous and
noticeable phenomenon to receive. This illustrated book is intended as a
compact introduction to the historical study of these objects, which—
though removable
from the books they
cover—are essential
parts of those books
as published. It offers
a concise history of
book-jackets and surveys
their use by publishers
(as protective
devises and advertising
media) and their usefulness to scholars of literature, art, and book
history (as sources for biography, bibliography, cultural analysis, and
the development of graphic design). A list of some of the surviving
pre-1901 examples of British and American publisher’s book-jackets
follows the text.
celebrates over 100 of the most
beautiful bookbindings of the last 1,000 years. Fully illustrated in color,
The book focuses on the craft of
hand-bookbinding that existed
until the Victorian era when massproduced
trade bindings took
over. Bookbinding as a craft form
never disappeared, however, and
the second half of the twentieth
century saw a significant revival.
The introduction provides an
engaging overview of the history
and techniques of the craft and of
its most important practitioners.
books can possess all kinds of interesting qualities as designed or artistic
