New Zealand: a land of innovation in bioactives,
agriculture, nutrition and human health
New Zealand has long been considered a land of innovation
in the area of food, nutrition and human health. Evidence of
this proud tradition can be found as far back as 1904 when
a small baby food manufacturing company was formed in
Bunnythorpe, New Zealand to supply dried milk powder
to the United Kingdom. That New Zealand company was
Glaxo, the forerunner of the present day multinational
pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline, or GSK.
Today New Zealand’s dairy industry is
responsible for over a third of the global
dairy trade. New Zealand is also the
world’s largest exporter of lamb and
sheep meat products and sustainably
harvests fish and marine products from
its coastal fishing zone – the fourth
largest coastal fishing zone in the world.
The horticultural industry too has
a long tradition of quality supply
and innovation.
New Zealand was the first country to
domesticate and commercialise the
kiwifruit, with the first exports of this
New Zealand-grown fruit to the United
Kingdom and the United States occurring
in the 1950s.
As a result of having over a century
of excellence in food production and
agriculture, a growing bioactives industry
has naturally evolved. New Zealand is
uniquely placed to provide the highest
quality, innovative and sustainable
bioactives to the rest of the world.
Key points that differentiate
New Zealand’s bioactives sector:
unique animal and plant biodiversity
found nowhere else in the world
high quality raw material production
with naturally high levels of key
bioactives
clean, sustainable and unpolluted
soil and water for optimal growing
conditions and yield without significant
capacity constraints
government oversight of quality
standards: GMO, BSE and disease
free status; as well as antibiotic and
hormone free status in animal produce
a world leader in food and agricultural
traceability that prevents product
adulteration in the supply chain
well-developed and integrated
research organisations, universities
and medical facilities to drive future
research and development
a robust bioactives industry built
on specialised and experienced
export businesses.
BIOACTIVES

Its location makes New Zealand so special
New Zealand produces some of the most bioactively rich and
nutritionally dense produce in the world.
Scientists will often suggest that
geographic isolation leads to variation
and innovation within species. There are
very few regions of the world where this
is more evident than in New Zealand.
With its lush and fertile grassland plains,
the geography of New Zealand drives
the country’s agricultural economy.
The latitude ensures a year-round
temperate climate that promotes grassfed
livestock, arable grain production
and horticulture. Less well known is the
fact that because of the seasonal hole
in the ozone layer that migrates from
the Antarctic pole each year and rests
over the country, New Zealand produces
some of the most bioactively rich and
nutritionally dense produce in the world.
Compared to many other countries in the
world, there are a high number of native
species of flora and fauna that are found
only within New Zealand:
80 percent of all vascular plants
70 percent of all native terrestrial
and freshwater birds
all native amphibians
all reptiles
90 percent of freshwater fish.
But the process of identifying flora
and fauna is far from complete.
Of New Zealand’s estimated 20,000
fungi species, for example, only about
4,500 are known and characterised,
providing great potential for
prospecting new bioactives.
New Zealand
Sunshine
makes a Big
Difference
It is well known by international research scientists
who study the effect of the atmosphere on plants
and animals that New Zealand’s location in the
South Pacific represents a unique case study
into the effects of h aving a s easonal hole in the
ozone layer. The ozone layer acts as a natural
filter in the atmosphere, which protects plant
and animals from the increased UV irradiation
from sunlight. Annually, scientists from around
the world come to New Zealand to examine the
impact of high UVB sunlight on plants and
animals due to this natural hole in the ozone
layer.
BIOACTIVES

From comparative research, it has
been shown that New Zealand has a
40 percent greater UVB light level than
its geographically matched location
(longitude, latitude and altitude) in the
Northern hemisphere 1 .
For those who enjoy the unique lifestyle
offered in New Zealand, the higher UVB
levels require summer time precautions
such as protecting the skin with
sunblock, and wide-brimmed hats. But
what has been discovered is that plants
also take precautions to avoid overexposure
to UV light.
Plants do this by producing secondary
metabolites. These include bioactives
such as flavonoids, phenolic compound,
alkaloids, essential oils, etc as well as
phytoestrogens, which are considered
important compounds often exhibiting
human health benefits. These groups of
compounds can act as plant sunscreens,
thus providing protection for the plants
against UVB radiation 2 .
Because of its greater UVB light level, New Zealand-grown
plants produce compounds that can potentially improve the
overall health of the human diet because these natural bioactive
compounds exhibit potent antioxidant and other functional
properties that promote health.
These elevated compounds from
New Zealand-grown plants can
potentially improve the overall health
of the human diet because these
natural bioactive compounds exhibit
potent antioxidant and other functional
properties that promote health.
For example, on average one kilogram
of Bing sweet cherries grown in
New Zealand will have 238 percent
higher levels of anthocyanin (red colour
pigment, which is known for a variety of
health benefits including cardiovascular
health) and a 290 percent increase in
antioxidant capacity (measured using
oxygen radical absorbance capacity or
ORAC) when compared to one kilogram
of Bing sweet cherries grown in
United States 3 .
As further evidence of this UV effect,
in 2011 a research scientist from ARS
Western Regional Research Centre in
California published a report that showed
a moderate dose of UVB light given
to fresh, sliced carrots for 14 seconds
can boost their antioxidant capacity
threefold. The research went on to
explain that exposing carrots to UVB light
causes a stress response and these plants
respond by increasing their production
of natural bioactive compounds including
plant phenolics. Some plant phenolics
such as those found in green tea, are
powerful antioxidants with a range of
health benefits 4 .
According to these researchers, the
idea of using UVB light to enrich the
bioactives and antioxidant levels of
fresh produce such as fruits, vegetables
or other medicinal botanicals present
exciting opportunities for further
investigation.
Examples of New Zealand’s iNNovation
The innovation in natural design
and ecology that comes about
from geographic isolation has led
many organisations to examine the
unique biodiversity of New Zealand
with the view of commercialising
new discoveries. The process still
continues today, but what has
been commercialised to date
remains just a fraction of the
country’s untapped potential.
New Zealand is ‘primary producing’ country,
which means it has a major economic focus
on food and agricultural production. The
New Zealand Government recognised the
importance of health and nutritional innovation
from food and so, in partnership with industry,
it has funded research programs in both
agriculture and food technology over the past
several decades. While much of this research
has centred on traditional agricultural staples
such as beef, dairy and grain production, there
has been a growing trend toward investigating
and characterising bioactives and their potential
health benefits.
Quality Standards underpin Product iNNovation
THE NEW ZealaNd advaNtage
The success of a product takes more than just
a good idea or the application of innovative
research. It also requires reliable supply, in turn
supported by robust manufacturing and quality
control systems. New Zealand’s reputation for
excellence in food and agricultural production is
driven by strict adherence to quality standards.
New Zealand offers many competitive
advantages in the development of
functional foods and ingredients.
These include:
a grass-fed agricultural economy
that results in healthy, high quality
produce and unique raw materials
world-class research and
development in food technology
and applied nutrition
highly developed food technology
and production systems
a diverse range of high-growth
health ingredients and functional
foods companies
proven innovation and success in
food and beverage production
experience in the integration of
bioactives into novel food systems.
The importance of quality standards
cannot be overstated, as this is an
essential element in building trust and
brand loyalty with the retail consumer.
These quality and production standards
create confidence in the bioactives and
ultimately the products which are sold.
The New Zealand Government has
significant oversight and enforcement
of quality standards relating to food and
agricultural products, which extends
to bioactives. The country maintains
genetically modified organism (GMO)
free status and bovine spongiform
encephalopathy (BSE) disease free
status, as well as a strict enforcement of
antibiotic—and hormone—free status in
animal products. New Zealand animals
are raised and farmed to very strict
standards of animal health and welfare
and the use of hormones and growth
promoters is banned.
The clean soils and waters of
New Zealand also ensure the highest
purity of the raw material source and
that the risk of product contamination
from heavy metals and pollutants is
greatly reduced.
New Zealand is world leading in raw
material traceability, which has grown
in importance as the reports of
bioactive adulteration occur from
around the world.
New Zealand Bioactives: giveS the Consumers what they want
The following have been identified as some of the key
market and consumer trends in the US. They represent
some of the common consumer expectations of food
and nutraceutical manufacturers:
Informed consumers
According to international
market research company
Innova Market Insights,
US consumers are
calling for increasing
transparency, credibility
and accountability
from nutraceutical and
food manufacturers.
New Zealand is a world
leader in traceability.
Ingredient and food
manufacturers must
follow strict and audited
quality and manufacturing
standards as part of the
country’s internationally
recognised food
regulations.
Sources of innovation
It has been suggested
that there has been
a recent slowdown in
new product innovation
as manufacturers
attempt to deal with EU
deadlines for labelling
compliance. Consumers,
however, continue to
seek innovation in their
food and nutraceutical
products.
The New Zealand food
and nutraceutical industry
has used its industry
research infrastructure to
continue the development
of new plant and fruit
cultivars that don’t resort
to genetic modification. In
addition to its innovation,
New Zealand is considered
a clean and exotic source
for food production.
Good health for an
ageing population
Sustaining good health
for an ageing population
is a significant focus for
a growing segment of
the US population. This
is driven by a growing
understanding from wellinformed
consumers of
the role a healthy diet
can play in extending the
active years. Because of
its geographic location
and grass-fed agriculture,
New Zealand offers the
production of whole foods
and ingredients that can
be shown to have higher
levels of nutritionally
bioactive compounds.
The demand for
‘free from’ foods
More and more, US
consumers are wanting
their food to be ‘freefrom’
undesirable additives
and residues. Innova
Market Insights indicates
a growing trend in the use
of ‘free from’ claims on
food products in the US.
New Zealand places strict
rules on the production of
agricultural products that
either severely restricts
or totally bans the use
of antibiotics, pesticide
residues, or growth
promotants that can be
commonly found in foods
from other markets.
BIOACTIVES

New Zealand bioactives: giveS manufacturers what they want
Bioactive ingredients and products from New Zealand
meet the growing demand of US manufacturers as they,
in turn, seek to meet the needs of their own customers.
The following is a summary of recent trends which take
into consideration what US manufacturers are seeking
from international suppliers:
Innovation
Innovation in bioactives
combines both efficacy
and safety. The ‘evidence
bar’ continues to rise for
bioactives in nutraceuticals
and foods. Manufacturers
expect both effectiveness
and safety. Since the
New Zealand bioactives
industry tends to focus on
the health benefits derived
from food products,
there is intrinsic safety
in its products.
Quality
Manufacturers can have a
high degree of confidence
in the quality standards
and transparency in the
auditing, application
and enforcement of
these quality standards.
New Zealand has some of
the most highly regarded
and respected quality
standards for food and
bioactives manufacturing
in the world; its food
traceability practices are
world-leading.
Marketing
Manufacturers are looking
for a bioactive that
through its marketing
story creates a high
degree of emotional
engagement with the
consumer. New Zealand
has long been regarded
by consumers around the
world to be a lush green
island country, with snow
capped mountains and
golden sandy beaches.
It is a clean and green
land, where the essential
goodness is captured in
the food and the products
it produces.
Sustainable
A bioactive product or
ingredient that is good
for the planet, that is
sustainable and clean,
a product that is also
ethical, is desirable. In
addition to its wonderful
marketing story,
New Zealand maintains
a strong reputation
for its environmental
sustainability and respect
for its ecology.
Supply chain
Because many of
New Zealand bioactives
are derived from the
country’s existing food
production, there is
already a significant
supply chain system
in place for many of
these bioactives. The
advantage of this is that
New Zealand suppliers can
quickly scale up supply
to meet future demand.
In addition, New Zealand
becomes a great ‘off
season’ supplier for
products that are seasonal
with high demand. US
manufacturers can avoid
the carrying costs of raw
materials throughout the
year until the next annual
production cycle.
BIOACTIVES

The New Zealand bioactives focus
The New Zealand bioactives industry
has put much of its research focus into
the following key areas:
proprietary separation, extraction
and isolation technologies; in
particular, the development of
bioactive proteins and peptides
from dairy and bioactive lipids and
carbohydrate from marine sources
anti-inflammatory bioactive
ingredients for inflammatory related
gut health, dermatitis and mobility
bioactives which have anti-infection
properties including antibacterial,
antiviral and antimycotic (yeast
and fungi)
cognitive function and
metabolic health platforms
immune factors for mucosal
and allergy protection.
Around 80 percent of all higher plants that grow
within New Zealand are endemic and not found
anywhere else in the world. It was New Zealand’s
early geographic isolation in the southwestern
Pacific Ocean that has resulted in the evolution
of a wealth of unique flora and fauna.
The country’s high mountain ranges act as ‘rainmakers’
and have ensured an ample water supply
to support growth and ecological diversity.
In additional to its plants, many of New Zealand’s
agricultural products are not found anywhere else
in the world.
The manuka tree was used by
Maori for a large number of medicinal
complaints, and early pioneers
in the New Zealand honey industry
demonstrated its utility as a bioactive in
wound healing. Manuka honey, a native
New Zealand honey, came to prominence
in the late 1980’s. Today, New Zealand’s
Manuka Honey is exported throughout
the world for its unique anti-bacterial
properties.
Horopito
New Zealand radiata pine (Pinus radiata)
Traditionally used in Maori medicine,
horopito has been shown by researchers
in the US and New Zealand to be
extremely effective against yeasts such
as candida albicans. Horopito leaves have
a hot peppery taste and have been used
as a seasoning on food similar to black
pepper. The peppery taste is caused by
polygodial, which is considered to be the
compound responsible for the anti-fungal
properties 8,9 . Horopito also contains the
powerful bioactive antioxidant flavanoids
quercetin and taxifolin.
Horopito extract has shown powerful
antifungal effects for the treatment
New Zealand has a very large forestry
industry which is based on the
sustainable production of radiata pine.
Introduced from California in the 1850s,
radiata pine (called Monterey Pine in
California) represents nearly 90 percent
of New Zealand’s timber industry. This
is largely because it grows faster in
New Zealand than almost anywhere
else in the world. A by-product from
the timber industry has been the
development of bioactive compounds
from the bark of radiata pine. The
extraction and production of these
bioactive compounds was developed
using only pure water as the solvent,
keeping sustainability in mind.
-70
The radiata pine bark extract has
been the subject of several clinical
investigations over the past decade with
the focus on cardiovascular health and,
most recently, brain health including
improvements in cognitive function 13,14 .
It appears that improvement in
microcirculation may represent the
underlying mechanism of action.
New Zealand radiata pine bark extract
has been demonstrated to support
healthy brain function, and may support
improved cognitive performance in
older individuals.
a specific bioactive compound which has
been clinically shown to be responsible for
manuka oil’s powerful anti-fungal and antibacterial
activity. This antimicrobial activity
makes East Cape manuka oil an ideal natural
treatment for bacterial, fungal, yeast and viral
BIOACTIVES

New Zealand is unique in the world for developing
novel bioactives from marine and aquatic sources
There are a number of marine and aquatic species (including fish,
shellfish, crustacea, algae and seaweed) only found in and around the
coastal waters of New Zealand that contain novel bioactives. Some
examples include functional lipids and complex carbohydrate with
anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties from green-lipped
mussels, which are only found around the coastline of New Zealand.
Recent advances in sustainable farming and
processing technology have allowed the capture and
concentration of some of these bioactive compounds
on a commercial scale. An example is the development
of novel anti-inflammatory lipids known as bioactive
lipid amides (BLA) along with bioactive peptides
and carbohydrate. While BLAs have been the focus
of much international research, harnessing their
beneficial properties from natural sources has been
a significant technical challenge until recently 15 .
Green-Lipped Mussel
Pain Reduction From Green Shell Mussel Extract
for Patients with Arthrosis of the Knee
Green-lipped mussel extract is a natural health
product extracted from New Zealand’s indigenous
greenshell mussels (Perna canaliculus), which
are grown on coastal marine farms in pollution
free waters.
SOME IMPROVEMENT
EXCELLENT IMPROVEMENT
This extract is included in a number of
dietary supplements sold worldwide for
animal and human use. Green-lipped
mussels are rich in proteins, amino acids,
minerals, mucopolysaccharides and
omega-3 fatty acids and are used for
their gastro-protective and even freeradical-scavenging
properties 16 .
After over 30 years of research and
clinical experience, green-lipped mussel
extract is recognised as one of the most
effective natural anti-inflammatory and
joint mobility supplements available.
The effectiveness of green-lipped
mussel extract is the result of a unique
combination of several naturally
occurring bioactives including functional
lipids and complex carbohydrate. These
work together to inhibit the formation of
pro-inflammatory compounds, thereby
helping to reduce inflammation and
providing a degree of pain relief.
There is a growing body of evidence to
indicate that controlling the production
of inflammatory mediators in the
body may help improve conditions
such as arthritis, asthma, psoriasis and
inflammatory bowel disease (including
ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease).
Because all of these involve elements
of inflammation, green-lipped mussel
extract is thought to have further
benefits here.
PATIENT ASSESSMENT
DOCTOR ASSESSMENT
A study conducted in the United States (2000)
on New Zealand green-lipped mussel extract 17
120 patients with arthrosis of the knee (where the
knee cartilage deteriorates and the bones start
rubbing directly against each other) were assessed
for reduction of pain. Both patients and physician
independently recorded and assessed improvements
in pain and mobility.
New Zealand’s marine-farmed green-lipped
mussel follows industry best practice guidelines and
the New Zealand Environmental Code of Practice
for the supply of safe, sustainable and healthy
seafood products.
In fact, New Zealand marine farmers’ safe, sustainable
and environmentally friendly practices have been
recognised by the international conservation
organisation Blue Ocean Institute who rank
New Zealand green-lipped mussels as one of
the top two ‘eco-friendly seafoods’ in the world.
functional
fruits
Surging global interest and demand in ‘superfruits’
illustrates the particular appeal that fruit has as a
naturally occurring functional food. As a result,
fruit growers and their products are playing a
greater role in the future development of new and
safe bioactives as well as new functional foods.
Companies looking for fruits that are clean,
have strong consumer appeal and elevated
Blackcurrant (juice concentrates and extracts)
The varieties of blackcurrant grown in
New Zealand are not found commercially
anywhere in the world 18 . Grown and
consumed in Europe for over 100 years
for their nutrient and health benefits,
blackcurrants have gained enormous
growth in popularity for their juice and
extracts within Europe and Asia over
the past decade. They remain, however,
relatively unknown in North America.
The New Zealand blackcurrant industry
is well structured and highly organised,
since producers supply New Zealand
blackcurrant juice concentrate for
multinational consumer companies like
GSK. The New Zealand blackcurrant
industry also conducts on-going research
into the health benefits of blackcurrant
concentrates and extracts.
Some of the research into the benefits
of blackcurrants has focused on
sports nutrition, the reduction of
muscle stiffening and muscle fatigue,
circulatory and cardiovascular health
showing improvements, kidney
function and systemic circulation, as
well as eye function and visual fatigue
improvements.
Circulatory improvements which benefit
brain function, cardiovascular and eye
health are among the list of clinical
studies that New Zealand blackcurrant
extracts have been involved in. Grown
in clean soils, under clear skies and
strong UV sunlight, which New Zealand
is famous for, the unique varieties
of blackcurrant that are grown in
New Zealand have developed naturally
high levels of bioactives such as
anthocyanins, phenolics, vitamin C
and other antioxidant compounds.
New Zealand blackcurrants have higher antioxidant activity than
other berries. Recent test results show that blackcurrants are an
antioxidant source superior to at least 24 other common fruits
and they have levels of anthocyanins (the colour pigment in fruit
associated with improvements in microcirculation and eye health)
higher than any other commercially available fruit or vegetable.
But the blackcurrant story does not
end there. The industry has shown
that New Zealand blackcurrants have
higher antioxidant activity than other
berries. Recent test results show
that blackcurrants are an antioxidant
source superior to at least 24 other
common fruits and they have levels of
anthocyanins (the colour pigment in
fruit associated with improvements in
microcirculation and eye health) higher
than any other commercially available
fruit or vegetable.
New Zealand blackcurrants also contain
higher levels of vitamin C than any other
commercially available fruit or vegetable.
This is why GSK sources blackcurrant in
New Zealand and in turn supply Europe
and Asia with its successful ‘Ribena’
brand of blackcurrant juice.
Clinical trials undertaken on behalf of
the New Zealand blackcurrant industry
have demonstrated that regular
consumption of blackcurrants reduces
muscle stiffening and muscle fatigue,
improves kidney function, increases blood
flow and blood circulation, improves eye
function and visual fatigue.
Boysenberry (whole fruit)
Bing sweet cherry
New Zealand is the world’s number one producer
of boysenberries, a berry that results from a
natural hybridisation of a raspberry, blackberry and
loganberry. New Zealand’s world-leading supply
position offers an exclusive position for companies
that are first to market with this excellent tasting fruit. On average the total phenolic
Recent research into the health benefits
of the boysenberry has revealed more to
this berry than simply its taste.
It has been known for over a decade
that New Zealand-grown boysenberries
have very high levels of antioxidants and
anthocyanins (red colour pigments). But
more recently the research has focused
on two other bioactive components of
the boysenberry called ellargic acid and
ellagitannins, which have been identified
as powerful anti-inflammatory agents.
While it is still too early to know these
results, the New Zealand Government
has been funding ongoing research
into the potential benefits for the
management of inflammatory bowel
conditions such as Crohn’s disease.
This appears to be a promising area for
future research 19 .
The Bing sweet cherry has always
been a popular stone fruit with many
of New Zealand’s close export markets.
In an attempt to better understand the
nutritional benefits of the fruit and to
add value to non-export grade fruit, a
study was undertaken during the 2008-
2009 harvest season by sweet cherry
growers from the Central Otago region
of New Zealand.
The investigation included an analytical
assessment of total phenolics (key
nutrients associated with human health)
and anthocyanin (powerful antioxidants)
levels in the cherry to benchmark the
New Zealand fruit against fruit grown
in other regions of the world. These
analytical results were then compared
to the results of similar studies from the
same varieties of sweet cherry grown in
California and Oregon which had been
tested by the University of California,
Davis, a public teaching and research
university. It was discovered that the
New Zealand-grown Bing sweet cherry
had fruit that was significantly higher
in both key bioactives – total phenolics
and anthocyanin levels.
New Zealand fruit was nearly 300
the same US-grown cultivar.
New Zealand sweet cherries were
Gold kiwifruit (whole fruit and extracts)
Kiwiberry (whole fruit and extracts)
Also known as the Actinidia arguta, the kiwiberry
is also a cousin of the green kiwifruit. Sometimes
called baby kiwifruit, this is a smaller, hairless
version of the traditional kiwifruit. Looking
just like a large berry and about the same
size, arguta has been the subject of extensive
bioactives research. To date, much of the study
has focused on the arguta’s ability to suppress
the symptoms of dermatitis in skin. Like the
gold kiwifruit, it is assumed that arguta is acting
on the human immune system to dampen the
overactive inflammatory response in hypersensitive
individuals 21 .
Gold kiwifruit is a relatively new fruit to the global
market. It is similar to its green kiwifruit cousin but
with a novel flavour that has become very popular
with consumers the world over. Gold kiwifruit has
been the subject of many advanced studies into its
health benefits and much of this research has focused
on the benefits to the human immune system.
A recent study published in the prestigious British
Journal of Nutrition (2012) reported that whole gold
kiwifruit contains nutrients which are important for
immune function during symptoms of upper airway
infection (i.e. the common cold), including vitamins
C and E, folate, polyphenols and carotenoids. The
researchers reported that consumption of gold kiwifruit
resulted in the detection of increased concentrations
of several bioactives that contribute to reduced
duration and severity of cold symptoms 20 .
feijoa (whole fruit and extracts)
As an edible fruit, the feijoa is green,
an exotic, refreshing and intense flavour.
New Zealand is one of the only
countries in the world that grows this
exciting fruit on a commercial scale.
Since 2007 there have been numerous
studies into the health benefits of
the feijoa by researchers around the
world. The research has ranged from
examining the effect of increasing
bone mineralisation to protect against
osteoporosis through to the fruit’s
Innovation as a by-product of the New Zealand wine industry
New Zealand is highly regarded for the quality of its wine industry,
which has also helped fuel innovation in the natural products
industry. Studies have been done to determine the antioxidant
potency of some grape seeds, honing in on the Sauvignon Blanc
grape variety.
This is similar to a study in the 1990s
that determined that green tea grown
in the very high UV light conditions
that exist in New Zealand produced
excess levels of oligomeric procyanidin
(OPC) polyphenolic compounds. These
compounds are powerful antioxidants
and are responsible for the generally
recognised health benefits of
green tea.
This is likely the same mechanism
for the very high antioxidant activity
found in the Sauvignon Blanc grape
seed extracts.
An independent study using
New Zealand grape seed extract in
skincare demonstrated that it was able
to improve skin cell membrane integrity
by both decreasing trans-epidermal
water loss (TEWL) and improving
elasticity each by at least 16 percent.
Reducing TEWL and maintaining
hydration of the skin is a major
objective of the skincare industry.
low energy, including transport to market.
For example, New Zealand dairy products came
out with lower emissions per ton of milk solids when
compared to the grain-feed farming used in the UK.
Bioactives from dairy benefit from grass-fed cattle
There has been a wide range of innovative dairy-derived bioactives
developed by the New Zealand dairy industry. These include
colostrum, lactoferrin and lactoperoxidase, immune defence
proteins, conjugated linoleic acid, probiotics, vitamin K
enriched milk and many others.
A major advantage of New Zealand’s
year-round, grass-fed dairy cattle is that
many of the bioactives, which these
animals naturally produce in their milk
appear to be elevated when compared to
other grain-fed dairy cattle. In particular
this appears to be true of immune
defence proteins that are designed to
confer a strengthened immune response
for a calf once the colostrum (or ‘first
milk’) is finished.
BLIS TECHNOLOGIES LTD
BLIS TECHNOLOGIES LTD
BLIS Technologies is a New Zealand biotechnology company and
award-winning producer of probiotic health products designed
to effectively combat harmful bacteria. Founded to provide a way
to reduce the usage of antibiotics through taking a preventative
approach, the company aims to promote good health through
the use of natural and safe advanced oral care probiotics.
BLIS Technologies was founded in 2000
following more than 30 years of research
by Professor John Tagg of the Microbiology
Department at the University of Otago. He
has devoted his life as a microbiologist to
discovering natural preventative methods to
stop streptococcal infections in children.
This led him to discover strains of the
naturally occurring tongue bacterium
Streptococcus salivarius. He identified
that only 2 percent of strains produced
antimicrobial substances (known as
Bacteriocin-Like Inhibitory Substances
or BLIS) that most effectively inhibited the
growth of the bacterial causative agent of
strep throat Streptococcus pyogenes. Strain
K12 was the prototype strain selected for
commercialisation as an oral probiotic.
In 2001 BLIS Technologies was listed on the
New Zealand Stock Exchange. In the time
since, the company has developed consumer
products for throat health, halitosis (bad
breath), probiotic support for the body,
and immune support.
FOREST HERBS RESEARCH LTD
FOREST HERBS RESEARCH LTD
The traditional medicinal use and strong antifungal properties
of the New Zealand native Horopito plant are well renowned.
Forest Herbs utilises the combined evidence from traditional
medicine and recent scientific research to formulate its products
from this unique and ancient herb.
For over twenty years Forest Herbs has
been harnessing the potent anti-fungal and
anti-bacterial properties of Horopito. They
cultivate and harvest only Kolorex Horopito,
and products are sold internationally under
the Kolorex brand. These consist of oral
formulas, topical creams and extracts which
have taken years of research and trials before
commercial release.
Researchers at Canterbury University
published compelling results in 1982 showing
the extraordinary antifungal activity of
horopito extracts against the yeast-like fungus
Candida albicans. This activity is due to the
main active ingredient, polygodial. Since
the identification of polygodial in horopito,
there have been numerous scientific papers
published confirming both in vitro
and in vivo this unique and effective antifungal
activity.
Plants containing polygodial have been
used traditionally as foods and medicines
in New Zealand, Japan, South America and
Africa. This traditional use, along with various
scientific tests, ensure that they are safe for
MANUKAGUARD
ManukaGuard imports premium quality manuka honey into
North America, and manufactures and distributes manuka honey
products. The company’s vision is to “reduce pain and suffering
on the planet”.
ManukaGuard was founded by Gavin Gear
who, when diagnosed with gastrointestinal
reflux disease (GERD) in his early twenties,
struggled for years with prescription and
over-the-counter products for relief from
chronic heartburn and acid reflux. He knew
there had to be another solution and, in
particular, an all natural one.
Together with his childhood friend, Brett
Edmonds, the owner of a successful
New Zealand manufacturer and distributor
of dietary supplements, Gavin founded
the company Ndal (pronounced end-all)
Laboraties, trading as ManukaGuard. The
two men knew of the medicinal benefits of
medical grade honey and, in particular, the
additional benefits of a native ingredient the
indigenous Maori people of New Zealand
have used for centuries. Through research,
testing, trial and reformulation a solution to
the GERD discomfort that Gavin and others
suffered with was found.
MANUKA HEALTH NEW ZEALAND LTD
Manuka Health New Zealand Ltd (MHNZ) is a vertically integrated
manufacturer and marketer of natural health products based on
scientifically-quantified bioactive compounds sourced from New
Zealand native flora and fauna. MGO® Manuka honey, BIO New
Zealand Propolis and GLMega3 green lipped mussel provide
Products are sold in standard formats such
This initiative moves MHNZ away from its
dependence on natural health commodities
MANUKAMED LTD
ManukaMed was formed with a vision to benefit patients and
consumers around the world by facilitating the supply of medical
grade Manuka honey in the form of well designed, quality
products appropriate for medical application.
ManukaMed was founded by Denis Watson
in the small rural town of Masterton,
New Zealand. After spending over thirty
years working in the New Zealand apiary
industry, Denis is a firm believer in the
therapeutic power of bee products. Parent
company Watson & Son has over 15,000
beehives strategically placed in some of the
most remote mono-floral Manuka areas of
New Zealand. Access to this resource and
control over the supply chain forms the
cornerstone of the company, and sets it apart
from other providers of Manuka products.
ManukaMed is dedicated to improving
the well-being of patients who could be
needlessly suffering from conditions which
may benefit from the application of Manuka
honey. They are committed to research,
education, training and maximising the
benefits from Manuka honey’s unique
properties. ManukaMed supports the work
of Professor Peter Molan from the Faculty
of Science and Engineering at the University
of Waikato who studies extensively Manuka
honey from New Zealand and it’s therapeutic
super absorbent fibre pad is
made up of gelling polymer
fibres weaved for two functions:
Honey delivery — Medicalgrade
honey gets released
into the wound bed through
an osmotic pump, in exchange
for exudate that gets
absorbed into the dressing
High drainage —
Upon removal from the
moist wound bed, the
dressing lifts off with little
or no residue left behind.
Dr-Touch Technology —
This coats the surface of the
dressings to make it easy to
NZLAVENDER LTD
NZLAVENDER LTD
NZLavender, founded in 2000, has created New Zealand’s largest
commercial lavender farm. Its unique lavender essential oil is
a 100% pure and natural product, grown and distilled in New
Zealand.
This unique lavender oil has unusually low
levels of allergens and irritants and high
levels of esters (48/50), when compared with
other conventional lavender oils. In 2011 it
was awarded a gold medal at The Australian
Lavender Growers’ Association’s (TALGA)
annual oil awards.
The lavender oil comes from a special variety
(cultivar) of Lavandula angustifolia discovered
at the Christchurch Botanical Gardens in New
Zealand and grown on the Canterbury Plains
beneath the Southern Alps.
NZLavender’s two directors, Dr Philip
Simms and Owen Dexter, have drawn
on their extensive agricultural, scientific
and pharmaceutical knowledge to ensure
the company produces oil to the highest
international standards. They are personally
involved in the entire process, from growing
the flowers to distilling the oil, and can
guarantee the purity of the product and the
method every step of the way.
MAJOR / CURRENT
PRODUCTS
NZLavender pure essential
oil is distilled from the
flower-heads of Lavandula
angustifolia, the preferred ‘true
lavender’, which produces the
most therapeutically active
and the safest lavender oil
available. It is renowned for
its soothing, healing and
balancing properties.
To help produce a totally
natural lavender oil suitable for
all individuals, including babies
and people with sensitive
skin, NZLavender selected a
special cultivar of Lavandula
angustifolia, discovered in
New Zealand, which produces
oil with unique additional
properties.
NZLavender pure essential oil:
has the lowest level of
the allergen Linalool of
any pure, unadulterated
lavender oil commercially
available in
the world
has unusually high levels
of the beneficially active
ingredients found in
lavender while maintaining
a well-rounded balanced
floral aroma
has low levels of the
less desirable astringent
ingredients found in
WATSON & SON LTD
Watson & Son was established in 2003 in response to the
growing demand for premium Manuka honey. Founder Denis
Watson is a scientist with over thirty years of apiary experience
and a lifelong interest in natural sciences. He is a firm believer
in the therapeutic power of bee products. Watson & Son has
been at the forefront of innovation and development in the
New Zealand apiary industry.
Science is the foundation on which Watson &
Son is based. Unlike other honey producers,
Watson & Son specialises solely in the
production of premium Manuka honey with
the goal of developing innovative healthcare
products that harness the honey’s antimicrobial
and anti-inflammatory properties.
Situated in the Wairarapa region of
New Zealand, Watson & Son harvests from
over 15,000 beehives placed in some of the
most remote mono-floral Manuka areas of
New Zealand. Harvested honey is transported
to the factory in Masterton where it is
processed, packaged and distributed to
buyers or to contract manufacturers of the
ManukaMed pharmaceutical wound care
products.
An important part of the Watson & Son
philosophy is the maintenance of good
relationships with the local people and iwi
of the areas from which the Manuka honey
is harvested.
