Growth Strategy Yielding Results<br />
■ Furthered positive trend of last four years by enhancing <strong>New</strong> <strong>York</strong><br />
<strong>Eye</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Ear</strong>’s financial stability– increasing revenue growth by<br />
40% <strong>and</strong> cash flow by $14 million, maximizing reimbursement,<br />
<strong>and</strong> reducing outst<strong>and</strong>ing receivables to 35 days.<br />
■ Progressed with construction of exp<strong>and</strong>ed surgical suite, completing<br />
first phase 3,600 square feet Perianesthesia Care Unit (PACU) on<br />
time <strong>and</strong> on budget, with two new operating rooms (OR’s) to be<br />
completed by early 2013. Simultaneously, our surgical volume<br />
continued upward trend – with a record 31,543 cases – due to<br />
increased efficiencies <strong>and</strong> addition of a significant number of new<br />
physicians across all NYEE specialties.<br />
■ Exp<strong>and</strong>ed new satellite offices to Columbus Circle, Tribeca,<br />
White Plains <strong>and</strong> Short Hills, bringing current total to 15, with<br />
plans to continually add several offices annually in locations<br />
throughout the five boroughs, Westchester County, Long Isl<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />
northern <strong>New</strong> Jersey.<br />
■ Developing multi-specialty, free-st<strong>and</strong>ing Ambulatory Surgery<br />
Centers (ASC’s) as joint ventures with physicians, <strong>and</strong> with a<br />
national ASC development <strong>and</strong> management company. Received<br />
certificate of need (CON) approval for four-OR ASC in Bayside,<br />
Queens; review of CON pending in 2012 for similar facility in<br />
Westchester.<br />
■ Exp<strong>and</strong>ed clinical service volume with close to 50 new professional<br />
staff <strong>and</strong> allied health professionals appointments, including<br />
Rachel Wellner, MD, MPH, to a newly created position as Director<br />
of Breast Services, <strong>and</strong> Joseph Bernstein, MD as Director of Pediatric<br />
Otolaryngology at NYEE <strong>and</strong> for Continuum Health Partners<br />
Otolaryngology Service Line.<br />
■ Widened marketing outreach with exp<strong>and</strong>ed direct mail program,<br />
<strong>and</strong> placement of both target <strong>and</strong> programmatic advertising in<br />
newspapers, magazines <strong>and</strong> radio, resulting in significant increase<br />
of online appointments <strong>and</strong> surgical volume.<br />
Investment in Advanced Diagnostics<br />
<strong>and</strong> Infrastructure<br />
■ Continued to invest in advanced technology, including Optos Wide<br />
Field Fundus <strong>and</strong> Fluorescein System, allowing for greater retinal<br />
diagnostic capability; Oculus Pentacam Corneal Topography System,<br />
providing most accurate corneal measurements available to date;<br />
<strong>and</strong> world’s most advanced Zeiss Lumera 700 series Surgical<br />
Microscope System throughout the new Surgical Suite.<br />
■ Continued upgrading patient care areas including the private patient<br />
Delafield Rooms, the adult hearing aid dispensary, <strong>and</strong> the clinics.<br />
Leadership in Physician <strong>and</strong><br />
Nurse Training <strong>and</strong> Research<br />
■ Enhanced status as leading nexus for training of international eye<br />
fellows, receiving 15 of the approximately 60 fellowships granted<br />
worldwide by International Council of Ophthalmology.<br />
■ Initiated collaborative Adaptive Optics Imaging Project with the<br />
<strong>Eye</strong> Institute of the Medical College of Wisconsin.<br />
■ Exp<strong>and</strong>ed educational activities presented under the auspices of<br />
<strong>New</strong> <strong>York</strong> <strong>Eye</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Ear</strong> Institute for Continuing Medical Education,<br />
including live courses, conferences <strong>and</strong> Gr<strong>and</strong> Rounds series.<br />
■ Initiated a Collection of Retrospective Bibliographies of Research<br />
Papers written by all NYEE-affiliated physicians to be placed on<br />
our website.<br />
Strength through Teamwork<br />
■ Enhanced Electronic Medical Record compliance including<br />
acquisition of SYNERGY, a multi-platform web-based image retrieval<br />
<strong>and</strong> archiving system that increases overall stability, retrieval speed<br />
<strong>and</strong> functionality; it provides integrated MD notes to password<br />
protected user/physicians, <strong>and</strong> enables comparison of historical<br />
data <strong>and</strong> measurements.<br />
■ Maintained uninterrupted pharmacy services <strong>and</strong> medication supplies<br />
to OR’s <strong>and</strong> patient care areas in face of the worst US drug shortages<br />
seen in years, with development of a drug repackaging program to<br />
maximize our existing stock of critical <strong>and</strong> non-critical care<br />
medications.<br />
■ Coordinated expansive services for our multi-ethnic patient<br />
population, including multilingual staff, ATT Language Line,<br />
language interpreters, social services, <strong>and</strong> multilingual support<br />
groups for patients with vision impairment.<br />
Extensive Community <strong>and</strong><br />
Corporate Partnerships<br />
■ Enhanced partnership with The Recording Academy/MusiCares,<br />
providing 3rd annual free voice screening on World Voice Day,<br />
<strong>and</strong> establishing our Voice & Swallowing Institute as preferred<br />
provider of vocal health services to MusiCares members.<br />
■ Established relationships with such organizations as The <strong>New</strong> <strong>York</strong><br />
Stock Exchange, providing free hearing <strong>and</strong> ocular screenings,<br />
disseminating patient education information <strong>and</strong> delivering
community/corporate talks by physicians <strong>and</strong> other NYEEE<br />
clinical experts.<br />
■ Extended <strong>Ear</strong> Institute program for Jewish children with hearing<br />
loss in conjunction with Our Way/National Council for Disabilities.<br />
Global Outreach<br />
■ Collaborated with ORBIS Flying <strong>Eye</strong> Hospital to conduct Nursing<br />
Fellowships for two nurses from China.<br />
■ Established partnership as a “sister institution” with Taiwan’s<br />
Show Chwan Health Care System, a comprehensive medical care<br />
network <strong>and</strong> premiere medical tourism destination.<br />
■ Conducted series of physician-led goodwill medical missions,<br />
including Operation Restore Vision to Nepal, <strong>and</strong> surgical eye<br />
missions to Zambia, Nigeria, Philippines <strong>and</strong> Dominican Republic.<br />
