12 If xenotransplantati<strong>on</strong> becomes a treatment of choice, the introducti<strong>on</strong> of the<br />

treatment into the NHS should be overseen by the Supra Regi<strong>on</strong>al Services Advisory<br />

Group (paragraph 10.43).<br />

Pers<strong>on</strong>al and social effects of xenotransplantati<strong>on</strong><br />

13 Counselling of xenograft recipients should include discussi<strong>on</strong> of the possible pers<strong>on</strong>al<br />

impact of xenotransplantati<strong>on</strong>. Research should be initiated to assess the pers<strong>on</strong>al<br />

impact of xenotransplantati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> potential and early recipients (paragraph 10.45).<br />

Implementati<strong>on</strong> of recommendati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

14 The Working Party recommends that the proposed Advisory Committee <strong>on</strong><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Xenotransplantati<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g> should produce guidance <strong>on</strong> best practice and revise that<br />

guidance in the light of experience. The resp<strong>on</strong>sibilities of the Advisory Committee<br />

should include (paragraph 10.47):<br />

assembling and assessing informati<strong>on</strong> about the possible risks of disease<br />

transmissi<strong>on</strong>, and <strong>on</strong> that basis making recommendati<strong>on</strong>s (paragraph 10.26)<br />

organisms are eliminated from source animals (paragraph 10.27)<br />

developing guidance <strong>on</strong> the m<strong>on</strong>itoring of future recipients of xenografts and<br />

maintaining a register of xenograft recipients (paragraphs 10.28 - 10.29)<br />

approving any xenotransplantati<strong>on</strong> trials involving human recipients and the<br />

centres that may undertake such trials (paragraph 10.32)<br />

overseeing issues of c<strong>on</strong>sent and c<strong>on</strong>scientious objecti<strong>on</strong> (paragraphs 10.34 -<br />

10.41)<br />

No xenotransplantati<strong>on</strong> trials involving human recipients should proceed until the<br />

proposed Advisory Committee <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Xenotransplantati<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g> is in place and the above<br />

issues have been addressed.<br />
