Founded in 1908, the RDS is a UK-based organisati<strong>on</strong> representing medical <str<strong>on</strong>g>research</str<strong>on</strong>g>ers in the public debate about<br />

carried out and the benefits that have resulted. It also liaises with the media and Members <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Parliament, providing<br />

informati<strong>on</strong>, briefings, talks, interviews and arranging visits to <str<strong>on</strong>g>research</str<strong>on</strong>g> laboratories. RDS is funded by its members,<br />

most <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> whom are medical <str<strong>on</strong>g>research</str<strong>on</strong>g>ers, doctors and veterinary surge<strong>on</strong>s. Corporate members include <str<strong>on</strong>g>research</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

institutes, university departments, medical <str<strong>on</strong>g>research</str<strong>on</strong>g> charities, learned societies and pharmaceutical companies.<br />

prescripti<strong>on</strong> medicines. Its member companies <str<strong>on</strong>g>research</str<strong>on</strong>g>, develop, manufacture and supply more than 90 percent <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the<br />

medicines prescribed through the Nati<strong>on</strong>al Health Service (NHS) and are major exporters to other countries. C<strong>on</strong>tract<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>research</str<strong>on</strong>g> organisati<strong>on</strong>s and other companies that support the pharmaceutical industry are affiliate members.<br />

Under the auspices <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> its Research and Development Committee, the ABPI’s Animal Research and Welfare Advisory<br />

Group plays an active role in promoting best practice in animal welfare and implementing the Three Rs. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> ABPI<br />

also supports science educati<strong>on</strong> from primary through to university level, producing educati<strong>on</strong>al materials that<br />

describe critical areas <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> science and technology, and explain the role <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the pharmaceutical industry in the<br />

founded in 1972 and established as a charity in 1987.<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> AMRC aims to provide support and leadership for its members and the wider charity sector involved in medical<br />

and healthcare <str<strong>on</strong>g>research</str<strong>on</strong>g> through the provisi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> informati<strong>on</strong> and guidance. Member charities are obliged to use<br />

peer-review processes in allocating funding, and they are required to support, am<strong>on</strong>g other things, AMRC positi<strong>on</strong><br />

statements <strong>on</strong> the use <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>animals</str<strong>on</strong>g> in medical <str<strong>on</strong>g>research</str<strong>on</strong>g>. AMRC members are committed to ensuring that they support<br />

the most effective <str<strong>on</strong>g>research</str<strong>on</strong>g> in the right envir<strong>on</strong>ment and that the <str<strong>on</strong>g>research</str<strong>on</strong>g>ers they fund follow good-practice<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> CMP is an alliance <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> organisati<strong>on</strong>s that share the comm<strong>on</strong> aim <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> seeking to ensure that the UK c<strong>on</strong>tinues to lead<br />

advances in human and animal medicine. Researchers, funding bodies such as the Medical Research <str<strong>on</strong>g>Council</str<strong>on</strong>g> (MRC) and<br />

the Wellcome Trust and pr<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>essi<strong>on</strong>al bodies including IAT, LASA, LAVA (see above) cooperate in this initiative to explain<br />

and illustrate the need for <str<strong>on</strong>g>research</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>involving</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>animals</str<strong>on</strong>g> and its benefits, and to resp<strong>on</strong>d to specific issues <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> public interest.<br />

Anti-vivisecti<strong>on</strong> organisati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

Nati<strong>on</strong>al Anti-Vivisecti<strong>on</strong> Society (NAVS)<br />

Established in 1875 as the Victoria Street Society, the NAVS was the world’s first organisati<strong>on</strong> campaigning against animal<br />

experiments. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> Society was founded by the humanitarian Francis Power Cobbe, who in 1898 left to form the BUAV.<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> NAVS operates through public educati<strong>on</strong>, political lobbying and publicity campaigns, and produces technical<br />

reports, educati<strong>on</strong>al literature, books and films. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> Society funds n<strong>on</strong>-animal <str<strong>on</strong>g>research</str<strong>on</strong>g> through the Lord Dowding<br />

Fund for Humane Research, a department <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the NAVS. In 1990, NAVS founded Animal Defenders Internati<strong>on</strong>al, to<br />

Founded in 1898, the BUAV opposes all animal experiments <strong>on</strong> both ethical and scientific grounds. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> organisati<strong>on</strong><br />

is dedicated to ending animal experiments, both nati<strong>on</strong>ally and internati<strong>on</strong>ally, through public campaigning,<br />

undercover investigati<strong>on</strong>s, media activities, political lobbying, corporate relati<strong>on</strong>ships, the provisi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> legal and<br />

scientific expertise, and the producti<strong>on</strong> and distributi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> educati<strong>on</strong>al and informati<strong>on</strong> materials. Campaigns cover<br />

issues such as the use <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>animals</str<strong>on</strong>g> in the testing <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> cosmetics, household products, chemicals and pet food, their use<br />

in medical <str<strong>on</strong>g>research</str<strong>on</strong>g> and the genetic modificati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>animals</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> BUAV coordinates the European Coaliti<strong>on</strong> to End Animal Experiments (ECEAE) and is a founder member <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the<br />

Internati<strong>on</strong>al <str<strong>on</strong>g>Council</str<strong>on</strong>g> for Animal Protecti<strong>on</strong> in OECD Programmes (ICAPO).<br />
