Absolutism: <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> acceptance <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> or belief in absolute principles in political, philosophical, ethical,<br />

or theological matters.<br />

Ascites: <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> accumulati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> fluid in the abdominal cavity causing swelling.<br />

Adjuvant: A substance which enhances the body’s immune resp<strong>on</strong>se to an antigen.<br />

Adrenal cortex: Part <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> adrenal gland which is involved in making steroid horm<strong>on</strong>es such as<br />

cortisol.<br />

Alternatives: An alternative is likely to mean an alternative method that does not involve using<br />

an animal. This is the principle encompassed by UK and EU laws.<br />

Amino acid: A molecule which serves as the building block <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> proteins. Proteins have different<br />

characteristics as determined by the sequence <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> amino acids. Genes specify this sequence.<br />

Anaesthesia: Artificially induced loss <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>sciousness or sensati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Analgesia: <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> absence or relief <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> pain.<br />

Analgesic: A pain relieving medicine.<br />

Anaphylaxis: An extreme and <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ten life-threatening immune reacti<strong>on</strong> to an antigen, such as a<br />

bee-sting, owing to hypersensitivity following an earlier exposure.<br />

Antibody: A class <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> proteins made by the immune system which react with and neutralise specific<br />

foreign antigens (any substance recognised by the immune system as ‘n<strong>on</strong>-self’).<br />

Antigen: A foreign substance or cell that triggers an immune resp<strong>on</strong>se. Its capacity to produce an<br />

immune resp<strong>on</strong>se is referred to as its antigenicity.<br />

Assay: the determinati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the c<strong>on</strong>tent or c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a substance.<br />

Ataxia: An inability to coordinate muscular movements.<br />

Autoimmune disorder: A malfuncti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the immune system in which it resp<strong>on</strong>ds against<br />

Biopharmaceutical: Medicinal drugs produced by biotechnology.<br />

Blastocyst: A very early stage embryo.<br />

Carcinogenicity: Capacity <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a substance to cause cancer.<br />

Cell: <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> structural and functi<strong>on</strong>al unit <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> which organisms c<strong>on</strong>sist.<br />

Cell line: A populati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> cells that can proliferate indefinitely in a culture dish.<br />

Cell culture: Cells maintained in a culture dish.<br />

Cetaceans: Order <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> marine mammal which comprises whales and dolphins.<br />
