<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g>re are no <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ficial statistics for the use <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>animals</str<strong>on</strong>g> in scientific procedures in Japan. A voluntary<br />

survey is c<strong>on</strong>ducted every four or five years by the Japanese Associati<strong>on</strong> for Laboratory Animal<br />

Science (JALAS):<br />

■ <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> most recent survey covered April 2001–March 2002 for which 889 <str<strong>on</strong>g>research</str<strong>on</strong>g>ers <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

universities, institutes, testing laboratories and companies were polled (resp<strong>on</strong>se rate 57%).<br />

■ <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g>se figures total approximately 4.7 milli<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>animals</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />

■ Almost 2 milli<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> these were GM <str<strong>on</strong>g>animals</str<strong>on</strong>g>, 99% <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> which were mice.<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> data summarised below relate to the period between April 2001 and March 2002. 6<br />

■ A separate survey c<strong>on</strong>ducted by the Japanese Associati<strong>on</strong> for Laboratory Animals in Nati<strong>on</strong>al<br />

Universities (JALAN) estimated that approximately 1.28 milli<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>animals</str<strong>on</strong>g> were used in<br />

experiments by medical educati<strong>on</strong> and <str<strong>on</strong>g>research</str<strong>on</strong>g> institutes in 1999. 7<br />
