Under European <str<strong>on</strong>g>Council</str<strong>on</strong>g> Directive 86/609/EEC <strong>on</strong> the approximati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> laws, regulati<strong>on</strong>s and<br />

administrative provisi<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the Member States regarding the protecti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>animals</str<strong>on</strong>g> used for<br />

experimental and other scientific purposes, EU Member States are ‘required to collect, and as far<br />

as possible periodically make publicly available, the statistical informati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> the use <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>animals</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

in experiments’.<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> European Commissi<strong>on</strong> has produced four reports for the <str<strong>on</strong>g>Council</str<strong>on</strong>g> and the European<br />

Parliament <strong>on</strong> the number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>animals</str<strong>on</strong>g> used for experimental and other scientific purposes in<br />

Member States <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the EU. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> reports are published approximately every five years and the last<br />

report was published in 2005 c<strong>on</strong>cerning data from 2002.<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> data summarised below relates to the statistics <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 2002. 2<br />

■ <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> total number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>animals</str<strong>on</strong>g> used for experiments in the EU was 10.7 milli<strong>on</strong>.<br />

■ Rodents and rabbits amounted to 78 percent <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the total <str<strong>on</strong>g>animals</str<strong>on</strong>g> used in the EU; 15 percent <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>animals</str<strong>on</strong>g> used were fish and other cold-blooded <str<strong>on</strong>g>animals</str<strong>on</strong>g>. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> proporti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> primates was 0.1%<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> all <str<strong>on</strong>g>animals</str<strong>on</strong>g> used.<br />

■ Animals used for toxicological and other safety evaluati<strong>on</strong> represented 10% <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the total<br />

number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>animals</str<strong>on</strong>g> used for experimental purposes.<br />
