T h e e t h i c s o f r e s e a r c h i n v o l v i n g a n i m a l s Appendix 2: Statistics - Research <strong>involving</strong> <strong>animals</strong> in the UK, EU, USA and Japan Research <strong>involving</strong> <strong>animals</strong> UK – Home Office Statistics <strong>of</strong> Scientific Procedures on Living Animals, Great Britain <strong>The</strong> Home Office publishes detailed annual statistics on the numbers, species and purposes <strong>of</strong> all <strong>animals</strong> used in scientific procedures in Great Britain. However, for reasons related to the licensing process, the statistics focus on details about the gross number <strong>of</strong> <strong>animals</strong> used for the first time in that year, and about the number <strong>of</strong> series <strong>of</strong> procedures begun in that year. Animals used in more than one series <strong>of</strong> procedures are only counted once (see paragraph 13.27). Furthermore, as explained in Chapter 13, the statistics also do not give any information about the actual degree <strong>of</strong> pain and suffering which <strong>animals</strong> involved in procedures experience (Box 13.3). <strong>The</strong> data summarised below relate to the statistics for 2003. 1 ■ <strong>The</strong> number <strong>of</strong> scientific procedures on living <strong>animals</strong> commencing in 2003 was approximately 2.79 million. ■ <strong>The</strong> total number <strong>of</strong> <strong>animals</strong> used in scientific procedures initiated in 2003 was approximately 2.72 million.
