Venue...Bowman-Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, NC (Capacity - 18,000).
Television Coverage...There is no television coverage for this contest versus the Indians
of Catawba College. The Rams currently have no games thus far in the 2005 season
that are slated for television broadcasts.
Setting The Scene...The matchup between the Rams and Indians marks the first game
of the season for both teams and marks one of the earliest college football games in the
nation as the Indians and Rams meet at Bowman-Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, NC.
The two teams have met only two other times with the Indians emerging victorious in both
of those contests. The conest is a non-conference tilt as the Rams will not play a conference
game until they face-off against Elizabeth City State on September 17th, 2005 in
Winston-Salem, NC. The Indians will open their conference season on September 24th,
2005 versus Presbyterian College.
The Series...The Rams and Indians have met only two other times in the history of both
programs. The first meeting occurred in in 1998 as the Rams fell 10-7 to the Indians in
Salisbury, NC. The second, and most current, meeting between the two teams occured
in 1999 when the Rams fell in defeat 17-14 on a last-second field goal that propelled
Catawba to its second-consecutive victory over WSSU. Both losses to the Indians have
come during the Kermit Blount era.
Fun Facts and Numbers... Both Catawba College victories over the Rams have come
via field goals. The 1998 game was decided in the third quarter as the Indians recorded
a mid-range kick to defeat the Rams, while the 1999 game would come down to a clutch
middle-distance boot, late in the fourth quarter, that ultimately handed WSSU the loss.
WSSU will look to earn their first win over Catawba in the program's history in 2005.
Purvis Takes Over…With the conclusion of the
2005 season, the Rams lost the services of quarterback
Joshua McGee, who has since moved
on to become a member of the Ram coaching
staff. With the move from playing field to the sidelines,
the Rams have crowned a new starting
quarterback in Parkland High School superstar,
and sophomore (redshirt) Monte Purvis.
Purvis, who appeared in five games for the Rams
last season, starting three, threw for 102 yards
and a touchdown last season while rushing for
167 more. He earned the starting job during the
spring 2005 football practice season and looks to
keep that starting spot for the season opener.
Despite the Rams have ten quarterbacks in training
camp.
The Brothers Bynum…The Rams have a tradition
of football excellence, and also have a tradition
of family that permeates not only the football
program, but the athletic program in general. The
Rams currently have two sets of brothers on the
team, the most valuable of which are the Bynum
Brothers. The brothers, Darrian Bynum (sophomore
LB), and Levern Bynum (senior LB), are
both possible starters for the upcoming 2005
season. Levern has appeared in 29 games
during his Ram career, starting 23 while Darrian
appeared in eight games his freshman year in
2004, starting six. Darrain finished 11 th on the
team in tackles in 2004 with 20 while Levern placed
ninth with 23 total takedowns.
The Coaches…The coaches for this game versus
Catwaba College are very evenly matchup
and both captain two football programs rich in
tradition, both of which are accustomed to winning.
The Rams are led by 13 th -year man and
WSSU alum (1980), Kermit Blount. Blount
has an overall record of 71-53-3 overall for a
winning percentage of .568. He has faced the
Indians twice and lost both contests (during the
1998 and 1999 seasons). Catawba is led by
Chip Hester who is entering into his ninth season
with the Indians. He has posted a 24-8 overall
record for a winning percentage of .750. Hester
has also posted a 2-0 record versus the Rams
and Kermit Blount during his eight-year tenure.
Narrowly Missed Homecoming…The Rams,
who will face Catwaba on Saturday, August 27 th ,
2005 just recently confirmed that the contest would
be played at Bowman-Gray Stadium and not at
Deaton Thompson Stadium. If the NASCAR
Weekly Racing Series had used its rain date, the
Rams would have been forced to move the game
to Deaton Thompson Stadium. That stadium
wssurams.com
has a direct connection to WSSU as two current
Rams would have been faced with a homecoming
of sorts. As Deaton Thompson Stadium is the
home of the Parkland High School Mustangs, current
WSSU-ers Monte Purvis (sophomore, QB)
and Jed Bines (junior, RB) would have returned
home to a field in which they had nothing but success
on during high school. Both Bines and Purvis
were part of the 2002 Parkland team that won the
NCPHSAA 3-A State Championship. Bines was
named the Championship game MVP and was
named the State Player of the Year in that same
season.
From Standard To Unconventional…The
Rams will sport a new defensive look this season
as they have trashed the conventional 4-3 defensive
scheme in favor of a more unconventional 3-
5-3 defense under the tutelage of new defensive
coordinator Mike Ketchum. The 3-5-3 utilizes
three defensive linemen, three linebackers, two
“spurs” or strong safeties, and three defensive
backs (two cover corners and a free safety). The
new look will pose matchup problems for opposing
teams and will make opposing quarterback
nervous due to the 3-5-3 being a look that many
QB’s have never seen, nor practiced against.
New Threads For The Rams…The Rams will
have one set of new threads for the 2005 season
as they have brand new Russell road white uniforms.
WSSU unveils the new uniforms on September
3 rd , 2005 when they travel to Washington,
DC to face MEAC member, and Division I-AA
opponent Howard University. WSSU will wear the
uniforms the very next weekend as they travel to
MEAC member, and Division I-AA South Carolina
State University in Orangeburg, SC. The uniforms
were designed with a collaborative effort between
head coach Kermit Blount and fourth-year
equipment manager Jay Robinson.
Rams Picked Third…The verdict came in on July
21 st , 2005 at the CIAA Football Kick-Off Luncheon
that took place in Petersburg, VA, and to many
Ram fans, it was a surprise. The powerhouse
Rams were picked to finish the 2005 season third
in the ultra-competitive CIAA Western Division.
WSSU was picked to finish behind 2004 Western
Division Champion Fayetteville State University,
who was tabbed as the favorite to defend their
Western Division title and the Rams were also,
surprisingly, predicted to finish behind the Eagles
of North Carolina Central University. WSSU looks
to prove the “experts” wrong in 2005 by winning
the CIAA Western Division and the CIAA Championship.
The Rams have not won a CIAA title since

winning back-to-back championships during the
1999 and 2000 seasons.
South Atlantic AGAIN...The meeting between
the Rams and Indians marks the fifth consecutive
season that the Rams have opened play versus a
team from the South Atlantic Conference. The past
four seasons it was the Eagles of Carson-Newman
that WSSU faced on opening-weekend. The Rams
posted a 1-3 record versus C-N over that span.
Looking To Win The Home Opener...The Rams
look to open the 2005 season with a win at home,
something that they haven't done since the 2001
season when the Rams posted a 27-16 win over
Carson-Newman College at Bowman-Gray.
2004 In Review...The 2004 football season was
one that saw the Rams start off slowly, and build
momentum in the season’s latter half en route to
an uncharacteristic finish at two games below .500
with a 4-6 overall record. Winston-Salem State
University entered into the season with high expectations
and a wealth of talent, however, injuries
to key personnel and the 12 th most difficult schedule
in the country proved to be formidable obstacles
to overcome. The Rams faced NCAA
Division II national football powerhouse Carson-
Newman in the first game in the nation on Thursday,
August 26 th , 2004 in Jefferson City, TN as the
Rams and Eagles would again combine for another
South Atlantic Conference versus CIAA conference
football epochs. The Rams fell behind
early in the contest but mounted a late-game charge
that came up just short as the host-team Eagles
held on for a 48-32 victory that dropped the Rams
to 0-1 on the young season, while Carson-
Newman improved to 1-0. The Rams lost not
only the game, but lost fifth-year senior running
back Willie “Pedie” Byrd to a severely broken
ankle midway through the second quarter. Byrd,
a back who only two seasons prior had rushed
his way to more than 1,000 yards, would see his
WSSU football career come to an end that day,
but not before he rushed his way into the end zone
for the 13 th career touchdown. In addition to the
loss of Byrd, WSSU would see superstar sophomore
Jed Bines and senior quarterback Josh
McGee suffer mild injuries on the afternoon, bruises
that would prove to haunt them for the entire season.
The second game of the season would get
no easier for the Rams as they returned home to
Bowman-Gray Stadium to play host to the Wildcats
of Fort Valley State University. The Ram
offense would have only one problem on the afternoon
as they easily ran their way around the FVSU
defense. WSSU would not be able to hang on to
the football as they fumbled away three scoring
chances after rushing for more than 300 yards.
The Ram defense on the other hand, would have
their hands full all afternoon long as FVSU’s All-
American-laden running attacked drove its way
into the Ram endzone for a pair of scores in the
Wildcats 21-19 victory as WSSU fell to 0-2 on the
season. The third and final non-conference game
of the season would see the Rams again stay in
Winston-Salem, NC, but would see WSSU face
the unenviable task of playing host to the 2003
South Atlantic Conference Champion Pioneers of
Tusculum College. Tusculum used their highpowered
passing offense to saddle the Ram defense
with 375 passing yards allowed en route to
five passing touchdowns. The Ram offense would
counter with 294 rushing yards, but could not compete
with the experience-laden Pioneers en route
to dropping a 37-20 decision, falling to 0-3 in the
process for the first time since 1981. The Rams
would continue on at home the very next week as
they welcomed old friends and even older rivals
to town as they hosted the Panthers of Virginia
Union University, marking new VUU Head Football
Coach, and former WSSU Offensive Coordinator,
Arrington Jones, III’s first trip back to Winston-Salem,
NC since accepting the head job in
Richmond, VA. The welcome he would receive
would be a less-than-hospitable one as the Rams
used the two-headed rushing attack of Jed Bines
and Martin Hicks to put 252 yards and three
touchdowns on the scoreboard and effectively
put to rest any VUU hopes for a win as WSSU got
off the losing streak earning a 20-13 victory. Even
the post-game chippiness between the two teams
could not diminish the importance of the win as
the Rams avoided falling to 0-4 for the first time
since 1975. The very next game would see the
Rams reluctantly welcome the two-time defending
CIAA Champion Broncos of Fayetteville State
University to Bowman-Gray Stadium as the
Rams looked to end a two-game losing streak at
the hands of the visitors from Fayetteville, NC.
The Rams, for the second consecutive season,
would see themselves fumble away a victory as
four miscues inside the Broncos’ red zone would
ultimately seal WSSU’s fate as an effective Bronco
passing attack would hand WSSU their fifth loss
of the season, this time of a 21-14 variety as the
Broncos earned their third-straight win over
WSSU setting an all-time high of three straight
wins versus the Rams, eclipsing a two-game
streak that FSU put together during the 1975-76
seasons. The loss all but mathematically guaranteed
the Rams would not participate in
November’s CIAA title game, making the rest of
the 2004 season a matter of pride for WSSU.
The very next week would see the Rams close out
their 2004 home schedule as they took to the gridiron
to face the Blue Bears of Livingstone College, a team
that they had beaten five consecutive times. The
game would never be in doubt as the Rams easily
ran their win streak over the Blue Bears to a halfdozen
games as a solid performance from both
WSSU running backs helped the Rams earn the 31-
21 win. The Rams, looking for their first two-game
win streak of the season would take to the road the
next weekend to travel the 90 miles to Durham, NC to
face their most heated rival, the Eagles of North Carolina
Central University. The two teams would trade
blows for the entire game, and even for a few extra
plays as the Eagles looked as though they had the
game won late in the fourth quarter before a Josh McGee
pass to Jared Brevard put the Rams on top with only 33
seconds to play. Undaunted, the Eagles mounted a comeback
from their own 27-yard line as they marched downfield,
earning a look into the endzone that would be wildly overthrown
as their comeback hopes looked to be dashed. However,
as the football fell harmlessly to the turf as time expired on
the scoreboard, a linesman’s flag would flutter to the ground
only moments later, signaling that there would ultimately be
one more play in Durham, NC that evening from the Ram
one-yard line. The Eagles would punch the ball into the
endzone, and push a dagger into the heart of all Ram fans in
the process as they snuck out the 35-33 victory in the process,
all the while with the scoreboard reading 00:00. The
Rams, however disheartened by the last-second loss in
Durham, NC, would show no ill effects earning easy wins in
their final two games of the season as they hammered Johnson
C. Smith and Saint Augustine’s College, on the road, by the
score of 31-20 and 31-13 respectively. Despite the weaker
than expected finish at 4-6 overall, the Rams placed four team
members on the All-CIAA First Team as Jed Bines, Phillip
Betts, Brian Scott, and Emmanuel Akah all earned firstteam
honors. Martin Hicks earned All-CIAA Second-Team
honors and the Rams would place three players on the All-
Rookie team, marking the fourth consecutive year that WSSU
placed at least eight players on the All-CIAA teams. As well,
the Rams would rush their way into history as running backs
Jed Bines and Martin Hicks both eclipsed the 1,000-yard
mark with Bines collecting 1,137 yards and Hicks collecting
1,148 yards on the season, marking the first time in CIAA
history that two backs from the same team eclipsed the 1,000-
yard mark in the same season. The 2004 season was one
that helped to lay foundations for the future success of Ram
football as the players and coaching staff look ahead to the
ushering in of the Division I era at WSSU.
Not Good Versus Ranked Opponents...Hopefully, for
Ram fans, WSSU will fare better this season versus ranked
opponents than they did last season. The Indians, who
finished 2004 with a #13 AFCA ranking, will come into the
contest versus WSSU ranked. The Rams were 0-2 last
season versus ranked opponents as they lost to Tusculum
College and Carson-Newman. Both teams are from the
South Atlantic Conference, of which the Indians of Catawba
Only Scoring Once...The Rams' defense will have to
step up in 2005 as WSSU only scored one defensive
touchdown in 2004. That touchdown, a 94-yard interception
return for a TD versus Saint Augustine's College by the
since-departed Edwin Jones was the lone score for the
Ram defense during the season. The Rams posted a 1-
0 record when the defense scored.
WSSU Jumps Out Early...The 2004 Rams liked to jump
out on opponents early as the Rams posted a 4-2 record
when they scored the first points of the game.
A Look At The 2005 Rams...The 2005 Rams will not
have it easy this season as they look to capture a CIAA
Championship in their final year of CIAA membership.
2005 Schedule...Winston-Salem State University’s transition
to NCAA Division I status has already begun, and the
2005 football season will be witness to the ramifications
thereof as Head Coach Kermit Blount has wasted no
time in adding two Division I-AA teams to the slate of 10
regular-season opponents for the Rams in the rapidly
approaching season. The Rams will face-off against the
Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference’s (MEAC) Howard University
on September 3 rd and will face South Carolina State
University on September 10 th . Both contests will be road
games for the Rams who have not faced a Division I-AA
opponent since facing both South Carolina State and Hampton
during the 2000 season. The Rams dropped a 40-6
decision to Hampton in 2000 while they defeated the Bulldogs
39-28. Coach Blount will put his 2-12-1 all-time mark
versus Division I-AA opponents on the line as he attempts
to earn his second win versus each the Bison and the
Bulldogs in the fall of 2005. Since arriving back to campus
to coach his alma-mater in the fall of 1993, Blount has
amassed a 12-season overall record of 71-53-3 (.559)
and has captured two CIAA Championships (1999 and
2000). This season he will close out the Rams’ final year in
the ultra-competitive Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association
(CIAA) before the Rams begin the process of reclassification
to NCAA Division I-AA status. The Rams and
Blount will face the challenge of trying to replace six starters
from the 2004 team that posted a 4-6 overall record. The
Rams lose three starters on offense, two on defense and
one from the special teams unit. WSSU loses one of the
most prolific offensive duos in WSSU history as the Rams
lost wide receiver Brandon Free to graduation and lost
quarterback Josh McGee following the expiration of his
NCAA eligibility. Free led the Rams in both receptions and
receiving yards for the past three seasons and finished his
career as the Rams all-time receptions leader. McGee
finished his career at the top of all but two WSSU passing
records as he finished his stellar four-year career as the
leader in pass completions, completion percentage, passing
attempts and passing efficiency, as well as placing
second in passing yardage and touchdown passes. The
McGee to Free combination connected 156 times over the
span of four seasons with Brandon Free catching 16
touchdowns off of passes thrown by Josh McGee. Defensively,
the Rams will see the departure of linebacker
Anthony Robinson who led the team in tackles
for the past three seasons. Robinson left the team
with two games remaining in 2004 and has since
transferred to Carson-Newman College for his final
year of eligibility. In addition to Robinson, the Rams
lose the services of P.J. Southerland who recorded
43 tackles in 2004, and Phillip Betts who recorded
28 total tackles including five sacks and eight tackles
for loss en route to All-CIAA First-Team honors. Despite
the departure of several key players, the Rams
will reap the rewards of several consecutive quality
recruiting years as many of the team’s younger players
are beginning to grasp the intricacies of the
WSSU offensive and defensive systems and are
beginning to challenge for playing time. The veteran
players will have to lead by example in 2005,
and the young players will have to mature quickly
as the 2005 schedule is one of the most difficult in
recent history. WSSU will start the season versus
NCAA Division II powerhouse Catawba College on
August 27 th in Winston-Salem, NC. The Indians,
who were nationally-ranked for the majority of the
2004 season, and who finished 26 th in the nation in
the final American Football Coaches Association
(AFCA) poll will face WSSU in the first football game
of the 2005. After facing the Indians, the Rams will
head to the road for a pair of road games versus
NCAA Division I-AA opponents. WSSU will face the
Bison of Howard University in Washington, DC on
September 3 rd , and will face South Carolina State in
Orangeburg, SC on September 10 th . The Rams
have an all-time mark of 1-2 versus both teams as
Coach Blount and the Rams vie to even the all-time
series versus both opponents by earning wins this
season. WSSU will then take a break from the road
by returning home to face the Vikings of Elizabeth
City State University in the friendly confines of Bowman-Gray
Stadium. The Rams will have revenge
on their minds versus ECSU as they look to avenge
2002’s 15-14 upset defeat at the hands of the Vikings
as WSSU saw a five-game win streak over
Elizabeth City State snapped. Following the contest
versus ECSU, the Rams will again head out on the
road, this time for a trio of contests on unfriendly
ground. The first of the three consecutive road
games will pit WSSU against their most bitter rival in
the Panthers of Virginia Union University. WSSU,
who got the best of the Panthers in Winston-Salem,
NC last season, will look to avenge 2003’s 29-17
loss in Richmond, VA, a loss which saw the Rams
squander a 10-0 advantage on the Panthers’ homecoming
day. The second road trip will take WSSU
to Fayetteville, NC to face the Broncos of
Fayetteville State University. The Broncos are
sporting a three-game win streak over the Rams
as WSSU looks to snap the skid at the newly renovated
Luther “Nick” Jeralds Stadium. The final
WSSU road game of the season will be the Rams’
third-consecutive contest wearing their light colored
road uniforms as the Rams will face-off against the
Blue Bears of Livingstone College in Salisbury,
NC before returning home to close out the season
with three straight games in Bowman-Gray Stadium.
The Rams will have two contests preceeding
the final contest of the regular season, which also
happens to be WSSU’s homecoming. The Rams
will square off against North Carolina Central on
October 15 th , Johnson C. Smith on October 22 nd
and close out the regular season versus the upstart
Falcons at WSSU’s Homecoming on October
29 th . If the Rams live up to expectations, and capitalize
on the wealth of talent that they possess, then
the October 29 th contest versus Saint Augustine’s
will be far from the last time that the Rams take to the
gridiron as WSSU firmly expects to take part in
November 5 th ’s CIAA title game, and the NCAA
playoffs the following weekend.
2005 WSSU Offense...(Starters Returning/Lost:
8/3; Letterwinners Returning/Lost: 24/9)...The
Rams will once again be loaded on the offensive
side of the ball as eight starters return from a team
that placed second in the CIAA in total offense per
game with 347.7 yards per contest. WSSU averaged
23.7 points per game in 2004, good enough
to rank third in the CIAA as offensive prowess was
not a concern for the Rams last season. At the
quarterback position, the Rams will return redshirt
sophomore Monte Purvis. Purvis, who will try to
fill the very big shoes left behind by Joshua McGee,
is the beneficiary of a redshirt year and a 2004
season in which he received some quality playing
time. Purvis appeared in five games last season
where he completed 12 of his 28 pass attempts for
102 total yards and a touchdown. He also placed
third on the team in rushing as he picked up 167
yards on 39 carries for an average of 15.4 yards
per game. Behind Purvis will be a host of newcomers
battling for playing time. Justin Sherrod,
a redshirt freshman from Westover High School in
Fayetteville, NC will attempt to earn playing time in
2005 as he will look to continue the success of his
stellar high school career. A three-time Mid-Southeastern
All-Conference selection as a sophomore,
junior, and senior, Sherrod possesses considerable
arm strength and at 6’1” and 190 pounds, is a
solid athlete that will compete for playing time.
wssurams.com
WSSU will also welcome true freshman Corey
Clayton to the quarterback corps. Clayton, a 6’2”,
195 pound quarterback from Chapel Hill, NC will
step in and immediately challenge for playing time in
2005. With a solid nucleus at quarterback, the Rams
will once again turn their attention to the strength of
the WSSU offense…the running game. The Rams
are in the very enviable position of returning the top
two running backs in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic
Association as WSSU welcomes back the services
of senior speedster Martin Hicks and slasher
Jerrick “Jed” Bines, both of whom easily eclipsed
the 1,000-yard mark last season. Hicks, a 5’10”,
180-pound back who runs the 40-yard dash in just
over 4.3 seconds, returns for his senior season at
WSSU looking for his first CIAA Championship ring.
With 1,148 net yards last season, Hicks led the CIAA
in rushing with an average of 114.8 yards per game.
He also led the CIAA in all-purpose yards with 121.1
yards per contest. Not far behind was his rushing
teammate Jed Bines. Bines led the CIAA in scoring
with 74 total points and 12 rushing touchdowns. With
1,137 yards on 176 total carries, Bines turned in an
average of 113.7 yards per game, placing second
in the CIAA. Despite finishing second in the rushingyardage
race, Bines would garner First-Team All-
CIAA honors while Hicks would earn Second-Team
honors. Either way opponents look at it, they will
face the challenge of stopping the two-headed monster
that is the Hicks-Bines rushing attack. On the
receiving side of the ball, only one senior exists on
the WSSU roster. That senior is the Rams most
potent wideout threat as opponents will again catch
themselves looking at the back side of the Rams’
number nine jersey as redshirt senior Brandon
Hussey will once again carve up opposing defenses
with yards after the catch, as well as pulling doubleduty
with teammate Martin Hicks on the kick return
unit. Hussey, who was the nation’s kick-return leader
in 2003, will once again utilize his best weapon in his
extraordinary field vision to inflict pain on opposing
defenses. Hussey also possesses a great pair of
hands to compliment his speed as he is the Rams’
leading receiving returnee who pulled in 28 receptions
for 277 yards last season. The Rams also
return 6’6” tight-end Stan Wright to the receiving
lineup for 2005. Wright caught 13 passes in 2004
with three of them being recorded for touchdowns.
His 6’6” frame makes him a large target for WSSU
quarterbacks to throw to, and makes him a difficult
coverage assignment for even the most stout defensive
back. The Ram offensive line is predicted to be
even more solid in 2005 than it was in 2004 as the
young offensive front has had yet another year to
mature. The offensive line, comprised mainly of
sophomores and juniors, will look to provide the
WSSU quarterbacks, primarily Monte Purvis with

time enough to find his open receivers. Jerome
Dunbar will return to the offensive line in 2004 as
he will be the anchor of the young offensive front.
Joining Dunbar is Javon Hubbard who, after seeing
considerable playing time at tackle in 2004,
makes the move to center. Steven Jordan, a
redshirt freshman is slated to fill the left tackle position,
and Michael Champaign, who has sat out
the past two seasons, will finally get a chance to
showcase his skills and compete for playing time at
the right tackle position. The self-proclaimed “Great
Wall of Winston-Salem” will once again look to open
holes for the WSSU tailbacks and give Monte Purvis
time to throw the ball downfield.
Ram Defense...Starters Returning/Lost: 9/2;
Letterwinners Returning/Lost: 23/9...The defensive
unit has undergone nearly a complete overhaul
with changes at almost every position. The defense
has even seen a formation change as the
Rams will scrap the tried-and-true 4-3 system in
favor of a 3-5-3 formation that will enable the coaching
staff to better utilize the available personnel. The
linebackers have undergone the most radical
change as William Hayes, the Rams’ 23 rd leading
tackler in 2004 has shifted from defensive line to
middle linebacker so he can use his 6’4” 275-pound
frame to create havoc for opposing offenses. Hamid
Dawson will likely fill the left end slot, while Michael
Merrit will occupy the nose guard position. Jason
Holman will assume the right end position in 2005
as the Rams will utilize their size and strength to
impose their will on opposing running backs and
pass-throwers. The linebacker positions have seen
change headed into fall of 2005 as well as three
youngsters established themselves during spring
practice and will likely be the game-day starters
versus Catawba on August 27 th . Sam Robinson
has moved into the left-side linebacker position, William
Hayes has solidified himself as a force to be
reckoned with in the middle linebacker position, and
Thaddeus Griffin will bring his athleticism and fieldvision
to the right-side linebacker position. Depth
will again be a strength for the Rams at linebacker
as Levern Bynum, a starter in 2004 will be the first
reserve linebacker off the bench as the Rams possess
incredible depth in the middle. When asked
about the depth at the linebacker position, Defensive
Coordinator Mike Ketchum was quoted as
saying: “…Other than our two very impressive
tailbacks [Jed Bines and Martin Hicks] I think the
strength of our team will be our depth at the linebacker
position.” The cornerbacks have been completely
overhauled as Maurice Reid will occupy
the left cornerback position, Joe Johnson will line
up adjacent to Reid on the ride-side corner, and
Pat Clark, a 5’11”, 205-pound athletic machine will
wssurams.com
line up as the Rams’ free safety. Clark, who is quite
possibly the Rams’ most football-smart player in
the secondary according to Ketchum, will be the
field-general for WSSU in 2005. The strong safety
positions, or “spurs”, will be another key to the
Rams’ defensive success in 2005 as Darrian
Bynum, a 6’0”, 200-pound red-shirt sophomore
will fill the left spur slot, while Maurice Jackson will
fill the right spur slot. “We are going to be much
better at matching up personnel,” Ketchum said.
“If opponents want to put a lot of skill guys on the
field, we can definitely combat that with additional
defensive backs. However, if an opponent wants
to put a bigger team on the field, then we can
definitely battle with our size, especially our big
linebackers. We are definitely going to be improved
from a scheme standpoint. I don’t believe that our
opponents will catch us off-balance with too many
of their different sets.
Ram Specialists...Starters Returning/Lost: 2/0;
Letterwinners Returning/Lost: 3/0...A pair of veterans
will return at the punter and placekicker position
for the Rams in 2005. Two-time All-CIAA
punter Chad Oakley will return for his senior season
in 2005 as he looks to continue to re-write the
WSSU record books for punting. He will again be
one of the best punters in the CIAA and will help to
pin opponents deep in their own territory should
WSSU’s offensive juggernaut fail to produce. At
placekicker, junior Matt Hind, who has been
plagued by injuries the past two seasons, will have
his first full season with the Rams, and will look to
be injury free. Hind, who hit the longest field goal
in WSSU history last season with a 53-yard boot
that had enough distance to have been good from
60 yards or more will be the Rams’ opening-day
field-goal kicker. The Rams will open the season
on August 27 th as they host Catawba College, and
if the WSSU players, coaches, and athletic administrators
have anything to say about it, will not end
until a CIAA and NCAA Championship have been
attained.
A Look At Catawba...The Indians are, and have
been, an NCAA Division II national powerhouse.
The 2004 Catawba College football team posted a
7-4 record in 2004, their poorest showing in over
five seasons. The 2003 edition of the Indians finished
the season ranked 13th in the AFCA polls
and again made an NCAA Division II playoff appearance.
Players To Watch (WSSU)...#1 Jed Bines, junior
running back; #27 Martin Hicks, senior running
back; #4 Monte Purvis, sophomore quarterback;
#9 Brandon Hussey, senior wide re-

ceiver and kick returner; #5 Chad Oakley, senior,
punter.
Players To Watch (Catawba)...#5 Corey Ready,
senior, wide receiver; #8 Brad Roach, sophomnore,
quarterback; #40 Stuart Adams, senior, middle linebacker;
#25 Charles Morman, junior, cornerback.
99 Problems, But Numbers Ain't One...The
Rams are loaded...literally. At media day this past
Sunday, the Rams had 97 players dressed in uniform.
That 97 players is only two short of the NCAA
maximum of 99 players that can dress for a team's
home games. That means that the Rams have a
roster that is 97.9% full. According to head equipment
manager Jay Robinson, the Rams may
very well have all 99 uniforms filled on Saturday.
Running For Home...The Rams are very proficient
at running the ball. There is no doubt about
that. As a team, the Rams averaged 246.7 yards
per game on the ground last season. However, in
home games, the Rams averaged a stunning 298.7
yards per game on the ground.
Secondary Solution...If there was one glaring
weakness in the 2004 Rams, it would be the WSSU
secondary. The Rams were ranked second to
last, or last, in every pass defense statistic in the
CIAA. WSSU has tried to remedy the situation by
bringing in a new defensive coordinator in Mike
Ketchum, and has switched from a 4-3 to a 3-5-3
formation on defense.
New Season, New Announcers...The 2005 season
will mark the debut of the new WSNC Radio
90.5 FM radio broadcast crew. The Rams' flagship
station has recently revamped its entire WSSU
Football broadcast crew. Ram fans will now hear
all the on-field action brought to them by George
Croom and Doc Love. The pair will combine for
a tag-team play-by-play effort that will keep all those
displaced Ram fans "in the know" with live action.
As well, the duo are planning to launch a coaches
show live, every Monday, starting on August 29th,
2005 at 6:30 pm on WSNC 90.5 FM. For additional
information, contact the WSSU Office of
Sports Information at (336) 750-2143.
The Event...The opening game of the 2005 season
will mark "Hall of Fame Induction Weekend" at
WSSU. Winston-Salem State University will enshrine
nine new members in the Clarence E. "Big
House" Gaines Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday
evening. All nine members will be recognized in a
halftime ceremony that will take place on Saturday
evening. The athletic hall of fame was revived by
Blount, All-Time...Most Ram fans know that
current WSSU Head Football Coach Kermit
Blount has amassed a career record of 71-
53-3, for a career winning percentage of .559
en route to earning the Rams, and WSSU, a
pair of CIAA football championships. However,
very few people realize that, during his
12 year tenure, Blount has coached 36 players
to All-CIAA First-Team honors. Among
those 36 different players, 11 have earned the
honor more than once, and two have earned
the honor three times during their four-year
career. Current Rams Martin Hicks and Jed
Bines will look to earn the honor for their third
time this season, and Brandon Hussey and
Chad Oakley will look to earn the honor for
the second time. Blount has coached four
players that have gone on to play professional
football in the NFL in Tory Woodbury (NY
Jets and Denver Broncos), Richard Huntley
(Atlanta Falcons, Pittsburgh Steelers, and
Carolina Panthers), Orande Gadsen (Miami
Dolphins) and Stephon Kelly (Cincinnati
Bengals - since released).
Kermit Blount
WSSU Head Football Coach
13 th Season (71-53-3)
Alma Mater – WSSU ‘80
There is little question that Winston-Salem
State University
head football coach Kermit Blount
has established himself as one of the premiere coaches
not only in Division II, but in all of college football. Blount,
who is entering his 13 th season as the head coach of
the WSSU Football program is a proven winner as his
teams utilize hard work, attention to detail and game
preparation as their tools for success. And one needs
to look no further than the Rams’ back-to-back CIAA
Championships in 1999 and 2000 to realize that this
formula is one that produces results. Coach Blount
began his coaching career at Armstrong Kennedy
High School in Richmond, Virginia as a quarterbacks
coach and assistant offensive coordinator. Then in
1983, he became a graduate assistant and assistant
quarterbacks coach at East Carolina University. Following
his stint with the Pirates, Blount moved on to
Washington D.C. and Howard University where he
assumed the responsibilities of offensive coordinator
from 1984-89 under head coach Willie Jefferies. Soon
after his arrival in the nation’s capital, Coach Blount’s
presence was felt as he directed a potent Bison offense
to the 1987 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference
(MEAC) Championship. He would spend four more
years as part of Jefferies’ staff at South Carolina State
University (MEAC) before returning to his alma mater,
Winston-Salem State University, as head coach in
1993. Since his arrival back in Winston-Salem, Blount
has amassed an twelve-year mark of 71-53-3 (.559),
including three CIAA Championship appearances, two
CIAA titles and two Pioneer Bowl appearances. In
addition, he was honored as the 1999 and 2000 CIAA
Coach of the Year, D.C. Pigskin Coach of the Year and
100% Wrong Club Coach of the Year. Coach Blount
is also a member of several professional organizations,
including but not limited to, the American Football
Coaches Association (AFCA) and the Central Intercollegiate
Athletic Association Football Coaches Association
where he was president from 1994-98. As a
quarterback at WSSU, Blount guided the Rams to
back-to-back CIAA titles in 1977 and 1978 earning allconference
honors along the way. The 1978 All-American
sat atop the WSSU record books for more than
20 years before his 3,330 career passing yards were
recently surpassed. Coach Blount is married to the
former Ava Harris of Richmond, Virginia and they are
the proud parents of a daughter April and a son Bryan.
You may contact Coach Blount via telephone at (336)
