Michelle Forness 

Dear Members, 

I am so honored and excited to serve as the 

MQHA President. Having served as the MQHYA 

President almost 20 years ago, I hope my years 

of observation and participation have prepared 

me to execute the obligations of this position to 

its fullest. Like the rest of the country right now, 

we have to reinvent ourselves, and the way we 

do business to stay current and viable in this 

economy. With that said we are going to focus on 

streamlining our expenditures, while at the same 

time try to increase communication and public 

awareness of MQHA. 

This year we will be updating our website, 

getting our by-laws current, revamping our novice 

shows, holding more clinics, and holding our first 

show with leveling classes, just to name a few 

of our goals. With everyone’s input and support 

we will have a great year and further prove that 

we are a great organization with a rich past and 

prosperous future.

2012 Youth President Address 

Life is about connections. Now that I am done with youth, people 

have been asking me if I will continue showing horses. I always find 

myself answering that I cannot imagine not riding horses. As far back 

as I can remember, I have been riding, and I am sure even before 

that my mom put me on a horse as soon as she could. Riding horses 

is a part of who I am, and without horses, I feel like something would 

be missing in my life. Horses are a way for us to create bonds. When 

riding, we must build a close relationship with and have respect 

for our horse. Our horse is our partner. For the youth, this fosters 

an experience in which one can build a deep appreciation for other 

beings. I think this ties in well with a favorite quotation of mine by 

Albert Einstein: 

“A human being is part of a whole, called by us the Universe, a part limited in time and space. 

He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings, as something separated from the rest a kind of 

optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our 

personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest us. Our task must be to free ourselves 

from this prison by widening our circles of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole 

of nature in its beauty.” 

Not only do we connect with our horse, but we have also built relationships with other members 

of MQHA and created our own family. Needless to say, horses are extremely influential in our lives 

whether we recognize it or not. I would now like to take this time to thank some of the people 

who have played an integral role in my years of youth. Linda Murphy and my mom have provided 

guidance and support throughout the show seasons. The youth officers this past year have created 

memories that I will fondly look back upon for years to come. Finally, I would like to thank many 

members in the audience who I remember steered me in the right direction when I was beginning to 

show Quarter Horses years ago.

The Missouri Quarter Horse Association 

has great pride in our members, and 

especially those that own, show, and 

exemplify great horses. Dr Ray and Ann 

have been members for many years not 

only showing themselves, but working with 

the youth as their own children, Michael 

“Mike” and Molly exhibited top horses 

during their youth years. 

There are many of us that would like 

to say, yes we had or have one or two 

great show pen horses, but can you 

imagine have thirty! Yes, within the 

pages of data I counted thirty. Out of all 

of these outstanding horses they have 

received; total Register of Meritis-88; total 

Superiors-68; total AQHA Champions-4; 

total World Show Qualifers-56; total 

World Show Placers-3-10-70; total 

Reserve World Champions 19; total World 

Champions-19; total High Point Top 10 

Pacers-60. 

Dr. Ray & Ann were asked to select 

some of their favorites, that’s a hard 

choice. But they did select a special few:

Dr Ray and Ann not only spend time with horses, but 

now with the extended family of Mike and wife Linda 

with their children Nick, Maddox, and Brock. Molly and 

husband Mike with their children Zach and Halle. 

They feel very blessed to have owned the above 

horses as well as others not named. They feel equally 

blessed to have great riders. Mike and Molly both 

won the youth world during their time in youth. And 

some of the great help during the years came from; 

Jody Galyean, Tommy Manion, Doug Carpenter, Jerry 

Erickson, and Jon Barry. All were invaluable in this 

business.

Bill and Betty Crouch 

William “Bill” & Betty Crouch Inductees into 

the MQHA 2013 Hall of Fame, Bill & Betty 

have been members of Missouri Quarter 

Horse Association since the early 70’s. They 

have been devoted and worked in many areas. 

Just to note a few of the committees include; 

Seminars, Finance, Shows, Recreational Riding, 

Show Management, and many others. 

Many miles traveled across state in conducting 

seminars. This was a special highlight as 

Bill conducted the agenda and Betty helping 

on the sidelines. A lot of hours spend on telling 

everyone about the Missouri Quarter Horse 

Association, answering questions and extending 

the “Welcome Mat.” 

Another special cause was working the Boys 

Town Horse Show which started in early 70’s. 

This was a consistent dedication annually for 

over forty years. 


Bill attended University of Missouri with a Bachelor 

of Science in Agriculture & Business and also a 

degree in Certified Financial Planning. Betty attended 

Christian College and University of Missouri with a 

degree in Home Economics. Bill served in the Army 

four years and was stationed in France. 

They have two children; Steve and Ibby. Ibby and 

her husband Rob have two sons Kyle and Tyler. For 

many years, they followed daughter Ibby as she and 

her horse blazed the trail to many shows, in state and 

out of state. A lot of trophies came home with them. 

Other responsibilities include; AQHA Director 

Emeritus, AQHA Past Chairman Recreational Riding, 

AQHA Chairman Finance Committee, Past member 

Affiliate Council, Past membership committee, 4-H 

Foundation Past President and Trustee, William Jewell 

College of Liberty, Mo. Finance Committee Trustee, 

and devout members attending and serving their 

family church. 

They both still work; Bill as a Certified Financial 

Planner in his company shared by seven 

other owners, and Betty has her own independent 

jewelry business. 

When asked what MQHA means to them, they 

answered with horses and kids are a great way to 

grow up, teaching responsibility, sportsmanship and 

how to work hard and live right. MQHA makes that all 

happen. Its fun to work together and see kids grow 

up to be fine adults leading others.

Paul and Kristin Lindsey 


Paul S. Lindsey Jr. & Kristin Lindsey Inductees 

into the MQHA 2013 Hall of Fame, they have been 

active members since 1986. Paul & Kris have both 

worked behind and directly within the functions of 

MQHA. They have worked, attended, and showed 

several championship horses in youth, amateur, 

and open world to obtain championships and 

reserve championships. To name a few; All Proof, 

Ruler I Am, Dial Bar Sambo, Sonny’s Hot Jazz, Just 

Plain Mac, The Gamblers Hand and Zippomite. All 

of which has given them many fond memories. 

They have been very generous in concerns of our 

Missouri Quarter Horse association, and issues 

and concerns of our general equine world. On many 

occasions they have placed equine activities in 

a priority position. The involvement has a special 

meaning for Paul & Kris; “An opportunity to make 

many, many friends and provide Erik and Terri an 

opportunity to excel in an activity we all enjoyed as 

a family.” 

In 1992, Paul served as President as well serving 

other positions in various years. Also, Vice-President, 

Board of Directors, Executive Committee plus 

chairing many other committees. Kris has worked 

in the show office, awards, any other needed areas. 

They were both very involved the year American 

Quarter Horse had their convention in St. Louis, 

“Meet Me In St. Louis”. This was a special highlight of 

an MQHA event. 

They both have worked many hours in assisting 

MQHA with accounting services, publication layouts 

and printing, and the many Seminars that a grill, 

cooker, and food was sent for all in attendance. 

The American Quarter Horse Association also has 

Paul’s involvement in many areas; Director At Large, 

Past Chairman of Public Policy, committee member 

of Nomination, Show & Contest, Judges, International 

and Regional Affiliate Council. 

Paul attended (SMS) Mo. State University majoring 

in Accounting, and Kris attended Spring College in 

Massachusetts. 

Their family consist of children; Darla, Terri, Erik, 

grandchildren; Michelle, Brandon, Waylen, Colten 

and John Calvin. Also two son-in-laws Adam Donahue 

and Frank Frangione. And, one daughter-in-law Valeri 

Lindsey. 

Both has worked in the propane industry serving in 

positions of Executive Committee and Board member 

of the National Propane Gas Association for several 

years. 

They are active members of the Second Baptist 

Church, Kris serving as Treasurer for many years and 

Ways & Means library fund. Paul serves on the Missouri 

Development of the church.

Missouri Quarter Horse Association Past President, 

a Past American Quarter Horse National Director, 

a man of many talents and love. A Family man, 

Horseman, Musician, Auctioneer. & Cattle expertise. 

“The profession I’m in is so rewarding because I get 

to meet so many kinds of people.” 

A man that leaves a legacy of many talents, even 

in childhood days of unbeatable records, such as, 

excelled in sports. At the age of 14 years he set a 

“strike out’ record in the American Legion with 19 

players in 8 innings. The record still stands. 

In 1958 graduated from Hickman High School 

in Columbia. He lettered in football, baseball and 

basketball. He followed his dreams by attending 

and graduating from Reisch American School if 

Auctioneering in Mason City, Iowa in 1959. An uncle, 

Tony Thornton being in the business gave him the 

career incentive. 

He and his father, Frank Graham owned Melody 

Acres, a horse ranch located in Rocheport, Mo. There 

with his children, he not only raised, owned, and 

showed many MQHA Year End Awards and Futurity 

Champions. To name a few; NSBA Hall of Fame Mare, 

Sabrina Lee, also other Nationally recognized such 

as Docs Melody, Melody Zipper, 4 Time World APHA 

Champion Sprockette, along with 12 other AQHA 

and APHA World Champions. He showed cutting 

horses and owned and promoted Red Flash Howard, 

a Congress racing Champion. This horse was one of 

the few that outrun Jet Smooth. 

He and his father also owned and operated 4 

Square Livestock Markets at Marshall Junction, Mo 

from 1977-1985. There were times that over 500 

horse consignments featured at an auction. 

In 1970 he joined the Missouri Quarter Horse 

Association. He served on the Breeders Committee 

and Stallion Futurities. He was on the small 

committee that met to discuss a way to help 

promote the Missouri Quarter Horse Association, 

Stallions, Shows, and the horse industry in general. 

They decided to start a MQHA Directory. The first 

one published was 1971-1972 with the front cover 

featuring the horse, Sabrina Lee with Sabrina Graham. 

The first few directories were published as a two year 

publication. 

Graham was a lifetime member of American Quarter 

Horse Association, American Paint Association, 

National Cutting Horse Association, and a member of 

the National Cowboy Hall of Fame. 

Other areas of interest and talent was music. In 

1981 he recorded his 1st album. There were well 

known musician’s that he performed with; Merle 

Haggard, Marty Robbins, Jeanne Pruitt, Willie Nelson, 

and many others. He performed at the Grand 

Ole Opry. He had 40 listings in country music and 

Presidential Candidates utilized his music in their 

campaigns. 

He taught his 10 children to work, he would say in a 

“loving” way, I like to raise my help. 

It was a wonderful tribute to a son to have his father 

attend his Hall of Fame Induction. Jerry Graham is 

deceased now, but I’m sure he looked on with pride as 

his father, Jerry Franklin Graham Sr. at the age of 92 

+ years was introduced. His father was presented the 

Hall of Fame plaque by Jerry’s daughter, Sabrina and 

special friend, Steve Lyons Past President MQHA.
