The Dukes <strong>of</strong> Limburg in Brabant possessed a separate<br />

coinage from <strong>the</strong> eleventh century but our ;<br />

knowledge <strong>of</strong> it<br />

is excessively scanty down to a few years prior<br />

to <strong>the</strong> cession <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> duchy in 1288 to <strong>the</strong> Duke<br />

<strong>of</strong> Brabant, who assumed <strong>the</strong> title <strong>of</strong> Dvx Limburgie on<br />

Of <strong>the</strong> independent rulers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> province Waleran IV.<br />

kingdom <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ne<strong>the</strong>rlands. By virtue <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Salic law,<br />

on <strong>the</strong> demise <strong>of</strong> William III. without male issue this portion<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> dominions passed to <strong>the</strong> house <strong>of</strong> Nassau.<br />

<strong>the</strong> mint at Thionville. From 1288 <strong>the</strong> history <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

counts is more or less identified with that <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> empire<br />

and <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r parts <strong>of</strong> Europe. Henry V., who succeeded as<br />

count in 1288, became emperor in 1308, and in 1309 <strong>the</strong><br />

celebrated John <strong>of</strong> Luxemburgh acquired <strong>the</strong> crown <strong>of</strong><br />
