Cat. Rossi, 1880, Nos. 1443-44. The piece is figured in Plate IV.<br />

Zecchino, an Italian gold denomination, properly belonging to Venice,<br />

where <strong>the</strong> first was struck during <strong>the</strong> reign <strong>of</strong> Gio. Dandolo (1280-89).<br />

It derived its name from Zecca, <strong>the</strong>.Venetian form <strong>of</strong> Giudecca, where <strong>the</strong><br />

mint lay. It was probably suggested by <strong>the</strong> Florentine piece issued<br />

some years earlier, and was in its turn copied elsewhere. It underwent<br />

modifications <strong>of</strong> type and fabric from time to time. Crist<strong>of</strong>oro Moro,<br />

Doge (1462-71), had a copper zecchino <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> gold type. Francesco<br />

Molini (1646-55), Silvestro Valier (1694-1700), etc., issued pieces <strong>of</strong> 10 z.<br />

Of Pietro Grimani (1741-52) we have <strong>the</strong> 24 z. <strong>of</strong> Paolo Renier<br />

; (1779-<br />

89) <strong>the</strong> 12 z. ;<br />

and <strong>the</strong> last Doge, Lod. Manin (1789-97), crowned <strong>the</strong> list<br />

with a piece <strong>of</strong> 100 z.<br />

Zehner, a loth part <strong>of</strong> a thaler. Swiss canton <strong>of</strong> Chur. The achtzehner<br />

appears to be a multiple <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same piece ; but Whelan describes<br />

it as a silver coin <strong>of</strong> Sweden.<br />

Zeskin, <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> a silver or billon coin struck by Philip le Bon,<br />

Duke <strong>of</strong> Burgundy, in 1428, as Count <strong>of</strong> Holland. Comp. Suskin.<br />

Zlote, zloty, a copper coinage <strong>of</strong> Poland and <strong>the</strong> former republic <strong>of</strong><br />

Cracow.<br />

Zwaarte and double zwaarte, <strong>the</strong> Dutch term for <strong>the</strong> denier noir or<br />

unplated billon money.<br />
