Salvatorthaler, a Swedish silver coin <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> i6th and i;th c., having<br />

<strong>the</strong> effigy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Saviour on one side. A similar denomination existed at<br />

Jever in Oldenburgh. There is <strong>the</strong> half.<br />

Sampictrino, <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> i\ baiocchi piece <strong>of</strong> Pius VI. (1796).<br />

There are varieties.<br />

Sanar, a kind <strong>of</strong> sol, doubtless in billon, specified in <strong>the</strong> ordinance<br />

<strong>of</strong> Charles V. <strong>of</strong> Spain, 1528, limiting <strong>the</strong> municipal coinage <strong>of</strong><br />

Perpignan.<br />

Sanctus Vultus, <strong>the</strong> expression found on <strong>the</strong> mediaeval and later currency<br />

<strong>of</strong> Lucca, and apparently intended to apply to <strong>the</strong> effigy which<br />

occupies <strong>the</strong> obverse originally an idealised one <strong>of</strong> an emperor, but at a<br />

subsequent period a mere fanciful portrait, usually crowned and bearded,<br />

and from <strong>the</strong> latter circumstance conferring on some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pieces <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

J3th c. i 8th c.<br />

Lucchese money <strong>the</strong> epi<strong>the</strong>t barbone. The Sanctus Vultus seems to<br />

have been an attempt similar to <strong>the</strong> Dei Gratia movement, to convey to<br />

<strong>the</strong> ignorant and credulous majority an impression <strong>of</strong> some relationship<br />

between <strong>the</strong>ir ruler and <strong>the</strong> Deity.<br />

Santa Crocc, a silver coin <strong>of</strong> Lucca, iyth<br />

= c. 25 soldi. The rev. has<br />

Volto Santo and a cross.<br />

Santo Martino, a silver coin <strong>of</strong> Lucca = 15 soldi, I7th c., with<br />

Rcspvblica Lucensis, etc., and on rev. <strong>the</strong> name and legend <strong>of</strong> St Martin.<br />

Sassnaer, <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> a type <strong>of</strong> groot and \ groot struck in 1489 for<br />

Philip le Bel, Duke <strong>of</strong> Burgundy, as Count <strong>of</strong> Holland. Sch., xv. 418-23,<br />

and xx. 237.<br />

Schilling, a silver coin struck in <strong>the</strong> dukedom <strong>of</strong> Prussia and by <strong>the</strong><br />

Kings <strong>of</strong> Sweden and Poland for East Prussia. It was <strong>the</strong> currency <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Teutonic Order from <strong>the</strong> I4th to <strong>the</strong> I5th c. Also a denomination in<br />

<strong>the</strong> Swiss cantons <strong>of</strong> Glarus, Zug, and Zurich. There is a place called<br />

Schillingsfiirst in Bavaria, and <strong>the</strong>re was a mint <strong>the</strong>re, but apparently<br />

not an early one.<br />

Schindcrling, a name assigned to a coin struck at Gratz and elsewhere<br />

pursuant to an order <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Emperor Frederic III. in 1461.<br />
