Doblon scncillo, in <strong>the</strong> old Spanish monetary system a phrase used to<br />

express <strong>the</strong> value <strong>of</strong> 60 reales, although no coin <strong>of</strong> such a denomination<br />

has ever existed. A sort <strong>of</strong> money <strong>of</strong> account, like <strong>the</strong> mark and <strong>the</strong><br />

livre, or <strong>the</strong> Venetian lira di piccoli and /. di grossi.<br />

Doblone, a denomination applied to a pattern piece in bronze <strong>of</strong><br />

Clement XI. (1700-21) with Doblone Doppio D'ltalia, <strong>the</strong><br />

and Clement XI. Pont Ma.r.<br />

Dobra, a gold Portuguese coin struck under Pedro I., 1357-67 = 82<br />

soldi, and weighing 92-3^ gr. <strong>the</strong> 5oth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> marc <strong>of</strong> gold.<br />

Dobra, a gold Portuguese coin, struck in and after 1732, and = 4<br />

escudos, or 6400 reis. There is <strong>the</strong> half and quarter. The d. was = 64<br />

tostoes <strong>of</strong> silver.<br />

Dobra de Banda, a gold Castilian coin <strong>of</strong> Juan I. [John <strong>of</strong> .Gaunt],<br />

1379-90=120 reaes, with <strong>the</strong> usual rev., and on obv. a shield bearing a<br />

transverse band. It was current in Portugal.<br />

Dobrao, dobrdcs, a gold Portuguese piece, originally worth 20,000 reis<br />

= about ^6': 125. English. There is <strong>the</strong> meo-dobrao or half. But <strong>the</strong><br />

later dobrao was reduced to 12,800 reis. The dobrao appears to have been<br />

first coined under John V., and to have acquired <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> a Joamcse.<br />

Doppelschilling, a copper coin <strong>of</strong> Soest. A double schilling.<br />

Doppia, a Venetian gold coin <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> I7th c., equal to 12 lire or 2 gold<br />

scudi.<br />

Doppio grosso, or double groat, a silver denomination issued at<br />

Venice under Francesco Foscari (1423-57), with a half-length figure <strong>of</strong><br />

St. Mark on rev.<br />

Doppionc, a gold coin struck by Louis XII. <strong>of</strong> France during his<br />

occupation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Milanese (1500-12); a piece <strong>of</strong> 10 gold scudi or 5<br />

doppic, struck in 1641 by <strong>the</strong> Duke <strong>of</strong> Savoy during <strong>the</strong> siege <strong>of</strong> Coni.<br />

Donzain, a plated or billon French piece, <strong>the</strong> twelfth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> franc<br />

argent under <strong>the</strong> Valois Kings, and <strong>the</strong> twelfth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> silver ecu d' argent<br />

under Louis XIII. and his successors. There are various types, as <strong>the</strong><br />

douzain au croissant <strong>of</strong> Henry II. <strong>of</strong> France. The older type was also<br />

current in Burgundy under its autonomous Dukes.<br />

Drachma, a silver coin <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> modern kingdom <strong>of</strong> Greece. 100 lepta<br />

= i drachma ; 5 lepta = i obolos. There are pieces <strong>of</strong> 5<br />

and 2 drachmai,<br />

Dreibatzner, a silver piece <strong>of</strong> 3 batzen current in <strong>the</strong> city <strong>of</strong> Strasburgh.<br />

Dreier, a copper coin <strong>of</strong> Weidenbruck (i7th c.), Wurtzburg, etc.<br />

Dreilander, a type <strong>of</strong> gros and double gros current in three States.<br />

Dreiling, a billon or copper coin <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Archbishopric <strong>of</strong> Treves (i5th<br />

c)., <strong>of</strong> Hamburg, and Schleswig-Holstein. There is a dreiling <strong>of</strong> Otto<br />

von Ziegenhain, Archbp. <strong>of</strong> Treves (1418-30). In Schleswig<br />

it was <strong>the</strong><br />

half <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sechsling.<br />

Dreipolker (3-polker piece), a billon coin struck by <strong>the</strong> Margraves <strong>of</strong><br />

Brandenburg for East Prussia, and by <strong>the</strong> Kings <strong>of</strong> Sweden for Poland.<br />

There are 3-polker pieces <strong>of</strong> Swedish origin struck at Riga <strong>of</strong> 1622,<br />

1624, and 1644.<br />
