1633). The original concession to <strong>the</strong> See was from <strong>the</strong> Comtes de<br />

Verdun, <strong>of</strong> whom, however, no money is identified. Down to <strong>the</strong> middle<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nth c. <strong>the</strong> bishops added <strong>the</strong> imperial titles to <strong>the</strong>ir money (as<br />

<strong>the</strong> Counts indeed may have done before <strong>the</strong>m, even withholding <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

own names). About <strong>the</strong> middle <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> I3th c. <strong>the</strong>re was perhaps <strong>the</strong><br />

same sort <strong>of</strong> municipal jealousy as at Metz, and we hear <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> episcopal<br />

currency <strong>of</strong> Toul being confined to <strong>the</strong> rural districts, and possibly<br />

it was<br />

struck out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> city. The early French regal types (gros tournois,<br />

denier, blanc a la queue, etc.) were imitated at V. A very fine grand ecu<br />

<strong>of</strong> Charles de Lorraine- Chaligny, Bp. <strong>of</strong> V., 1616-22, is figured in Cat.<br />

Robert, 1 148 this and o<strong>the</strong>r ;<br />

productions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same reign are attributed<br />

to <strong>the</strong> engravers B[ailly] and G[ennetaire]. In <strong>the</strong> Merovingian pieces<br />

this place is indifferently described as Verduno, Vereduno, Virdun,<br />

Virdimo, Virdunum, Virdunis civitas, etc. O<strong>the</strong>r mints <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> See were<br />

Dieulouard, transferred about 1616 to Mangiennes, Hattonchatel, Dun,<br />

and Sampigny. Comp. Saint-Mihiel and Varennes*<br />

family, Lords <strong>of</strong> Verona (1262-1381) <strong>the</strong> grosso and <strong>the</strong> soldo, both in<br />

silver.<br />

Vevey, canton <strong>of</strong> Vaud, a Swiss mint under <strong>the</strong> Merovingian princes.<br />

Vezelise, Meur<strong>the</strong>, formerly in Lorraine, and a mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dukes <strong>of</strong><br />

Vianen, 21 m. N. <strong>of</strong> Luxemburgh, a mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> early Seigneurs <strong>of</strong><br />

Brederode. We may call attention to a rare daalder <strong>of</strong> Heinrich van<br />

Brederode, with his bust to his r., gauntlets and plumed helmet in front<br />

<strong>of</strong> him. The legend (Nisi Doininvs Frvstra) is divided by <strong>the</strong> shields <strong>of</strong><br />

Brederode, Vianen, and Mark. On <strong>the</strong> rev. is a quartered escutcheon<br />

. Lt. D\ Viari. There is a f thaler <strong>of</strong> Friedrich<br />

Adolf, 1715, Count <strong>of</strong> Lippe and Seigneur <strong>of</strong> Vianen.<br />

Viborg, an early Dano-Swedish mint. Viber, Pibr. Probably <strong>the</strong><br />

place <strong>of</strong> coinage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bishops, I2th c., whose coins bear Wiberga or<br />

Kelil (St. Killian or Ketil).<br />

Vic, near Metz, a temporary mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bishops <strong>of</strong> M. about 1556,<br />

while <strong>the</strong> right <strong>of</strong> coinage within <strong>the</strong> city was in <strong>the</strong> hands <strong>of</strong> Henry II.<br />

<strong>of</strong> France. The latter complained <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> debased standard issued at<br />

V. Here Henri de Vernueil, Bishop <strong>of</strong> Metz from 1612, struck <strong>the</strong> last<br />

episcopal money <strong>of</strong> that diocese.<br />

Vicenza, <strong>the</strong> place <strong>of</strong> origin <strong>of</strong> an apparently autonomous aqtiilino<br />

with Vicencie on obv. and Civitas on rev. I3th c.<br />

Vich, or Ausonna (<br />

Vicus Ausonice\ Cataluiia, probably an early Carlovingian<br />

place <strong>of</strong> coinage, and a mint <strong>of</strong> Wilfred II., Count <strong>of</strong> Barcelona,<br />

906-13, <strong>of</strong> which he left by will a third <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>its to <strong>the</strong> church here.<br />

There is an anonymous denier <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bishops with Episcopi Viet.<br />

and Santi Pctri. V. was also a Franco-Spanish mint during <strong>the</strong> French<br />

occupation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> province, 1642-48.<br />
