Tarascon (see Marseilles], Provence, <strong>the</strong> mint <strong>of</strong> Rend and Charles<br />

III. d'Anjou, 1434-86, Counts <strong>of</strong> Provence. In 1483 <strong>the</strong> Archbp. <strong>of</strong><br />

Aries gave leave to <strong>the</strong> mint-master here to strike his money at Montdragon<br />

in consideration <strong>of</strong> an annual payment <strong>of</strong> 20 ecus d'or <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

money <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> King <strong>of</strong> France, which tends to shew that <strong>the</strong> mint at T.<br />

had <strong>the</strong>n closed. The m.m. is a tarasque, a nondescript monster, which<br />

used to be carried in procession in <strong>the</strong> streets here and elsewhere on<br />

certain occasions.<br />

Tarbes, Hautes- Pyrenees, a mint <strong>of</strong> Edward I. <strong>of</strong> England as Duke<br />

<strong>of</strong> Aquitaine.<br />

Tarragona, a Visigothic mint (Tarraco, Tiraone), and one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Spanish kings.<br />

Tassarolo, a seigniorial fief <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spinola family (1604-90), and <strong>the</strong><br />

probable place <strong>of</strong> origin <strong>of</strong> certain coins, some with portraits, including a<br />

tallero with its divisions, a scudo, a luigino, a piece <strong>of</strong> 8 bolognini, etc.,<br />

all very rare. The coinage is connected with <strong>the</strong> duchy <strong>of</strong> Massa-<br />

Carrara ;<br />

one or two examples bear <strong>the</strong> portrait and titles <strong>of</strong> Alberico II.,<br />

1662-90.<br />

Termondc, or Dendermonde, E. Flanders, a mint mentioned in a<br />

document <strong>of</strong> 1 108. Guillaume de Juliers, grandson <strong>of</strong> Gui de Dampierre,<br />

Count <strong>of</strong> Flanders, struck money here in 1302-3. It remained a mint <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Counts <strong>of</strong> F. and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dukes <strong>of</strong> Burgundy and<br />

; by virtue <strong>of</strong> a<br />

concession from Philip le Bon (1419-67) <strong>the</strong> local Bro<strong>the</strong>rhood <strong>of</strong> Our<br />

Lady struck money here.<br />

Terncs, Les, Auvergne, present dept. <strong>of</strong> Cantal, probably <strong>the</strong> place<br />

intended on a coin <strong>of</strong> Jean de Chatillon, Comte de Saint-Pol, 1317-44,<br />

with <strong>the</strong> legend lohanes. Comes. Santi. Pavli. E. T. Nois.<br />

Terni, States <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church, <strong>the</strong> place <strong>of</strong> origin <strong>of</strong> billon pieces <strong>of</strong> 8<br />

and 6 baiocchi, 1797, money <strong>of</strong> necessity in character. Comp. Perugia.<br />

Teschcn, or Teck, Styria, a mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dukes <strong>of</strong> Teschen (1529-79), <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> bishops, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> town, and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Emperors Ferdinand III. and IV. as<br />

Kings <strong>of</strong> Bohemia. There is a thaler <strong>of</strong> Wenzslaw Adam, Duke <strong>of</strong> Teck,<br />

with Wcncesla D.G. Dvx Tesine. 1560.<br />

Thann, Alsace, a mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Landgraves <strong>of</strong> Alsace, I5th c., <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

municipality down to 1505, and for a short time reopened in 1623.<br />

Moneta Nova Tannensis. There are gros <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> town with S. Theobaldus<br />

episcopus.<br />

Thicrrens, near Moudon, Cant, <strong>of</strong> Vaud, Switzerland, <strong>the</strong> place <strong>of</strong><br />

coinage <strong>of</strong> certain contrefai^ons <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> money <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bishop <strong>of</strong> Lausanne<br />

by Louis, Seigneur de Vaud, a cadet <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> house <strong>of</strong> Savoy.<br />

Thionville, France, Dept. <strong>of</strong> Moselle, a mint <strong>of</strong> Henri II. le Blondel,<br />

Count <strong>of</strong> Luxemburgh (1246-81).<br />

Thorn, Brabant, <strong>the</strong> place <strong>of</strong> coinage <strong>of</strong> an important conventual<br />

establishment under <strong>the</strong> government <strong>of</strong> abbesses, 1 5th- 1 7th c. There is<br />

a gold angel <strong>of</strong> Margaret <strong>of</strong> Brederode, abbess, 1531-71, and liards,<br />

double liards, halves and quarters, belonging to this institution. Some<br />

bear <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Abbess Anna de la Marck, who, like <strong>the</strong> preceding,<br />

was <strong>the</strong> member <strong>of</strong> an illustrious seigniorial family. The Abbess
