Prisrend, a fortress in Servia in <strong>the</strong> Middle Ages, and <strong>the</strong> place <strong>of</strong><br />

coinage <strong>of</strong> pieces bearing Prisrenh in Slavonic characters, with a seated or<br />

standing figure <strong>of</strong> Christ.<br />

Provins, Seine-et-Marne, a mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Counts <strong>of</strong> Champagne, and on<br />

some pieces associated with Sens. Pruins, or Privins Casto. This was<br />

a seat <strong>of</strong> long and extensive coinage, but <strong>the</strong> types are mostly uninteresting<br />

and degenerate. The portrait <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earlier coinage becomes<br />

toward <strong>the</strong> second half <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> I3th c. what was known as <strong>the</strong> peigne or<br />

comb, through <strong>the</strong> ignorance or carelessness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> engraver. A corrupt<br />

type <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Roman interregnal money, struck in <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Senate,<br />

was executed at P. in <strong>the</strong> second half <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> I2th c.,<br />

and follows <strong>the</strong> lines<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> original, except that its origin is betrayed by <strong>the</strong> peigne champagnois.<br />

Puy, or Le Pu_y, Haute-Loire, <strong>the</strong> seat <strong>of</strong> a long series <strong>of</strong> episcopal<br />

coinage from <strong>the</strong> loth to <strong>the</strong> I4th c., <strong>the</strong> original grant having been made<br />

to <strong>the</strong> 28th Bishop about 920. The right was contested by <strong>the</strong> Vicomtes<br />

de Polignac on two different occasions, when <strong>the</strong> See paid 25,000 and<br />

20,000 sols as a compromise. Deniers, oboles, and pougeoises, or ob.<br />

Podiensis.<br />

Puy-Saint-Front, Perigord, a mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> early Counts, in association<br />

with <strong>the</strong> town, from <strong>the</strong> loth c. There were periodical dissensions on <strong>the</strong><br />

subject <strong>of</strong> this joint, currency.<br />

Puygiron, Dept. <strong>of</strong> Drome, a mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Counts <strong>of</strong> Valentinois and<br />

Diois <strong>of</strong> which we hear in 1327 through <strong>the</strong> condemnation <strong>of</strong> some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

workmen to be burned alive for uttering false money.<br />

Quedlinburg, Prussian Saxony, <strong>the</strong> seat <strong>of</strong> a convent in 928 and <strong>of</strong> a<br />

conventual or abbatial coinage in 994 by virtue <strong>of</strong> a grant from Otho III.<br />

There are bracteates, groschen, thalers, ducats, and copper money,<br />

usually bearing a figure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Abbess, standing with a book, a lily, etc.,<br />

in her hand. In <strong>the</strong> I5th c. <strong>the</strong> Abbey made some concessions to <strong>the</strong><br />

town.<br />

Qvitveli, Gvddelbv., Qvidelgebvr., Cvedellnbv, Qvidelige, etc., are<br />

readings on pieces. The ladies superior <strong>of</strong> this establishment were <strong>of</strong>ten<br />

personages <strong>of</strong> high rank. There is a thaler <strong>of</strong> Doro<strong>the</strong>a <strong>of</strong> Saxony, lady-
