Rupert or Rutrecht I.<br />

(1353-90), with Monet. Lvddem,and <strong>the</strong> portrait <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Count facing. On <strong>the</strong> reverse occurs R-vpertvs Dvx, and a shield<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bavarian palatinate.<br />

Lttxemburgh, capital <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ancient county, afterward duchy and<br />

grand-duchy, and a mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> rulers <strong>of</strong> this territory from <strong>the</strong> I2th c.<br />

Wenceslas I., Emperor, King <strong>of</strong> Bohemia, and Duke <strong>of</strong> L. 1353-83,<br />

entered into a convention with '<strong>the</strong> See <strong>of</strong> Treves, as we see that o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

rulers <strong>of</strong> L. had done elsewhere, for a common currency, indicated on a<br />

gros with <strong>the</strong> arms <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> two powers quartered, and <strong>the</strong> legend<br />

1795 a piece <strong>of</strong> 72 asses was struck here during <strong>the</strong> siege by <strong>the</strong> French.<br />

Luzille, a mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Emperor Charles IV. as Count <strong>of</strong> Luxemburgh,<br />

1346-53.<br />

Lvov, Poland, a mint <strong>of</strong> Casimir <strong>the</strong> Great, 1333-70.<br />

Lyons, <strong>the</strong> seat <strong>of</strong> a mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Kings <strong>of</strong> Burgundy and Austrasia,<br />

Pepin, Charlemagne, Charles de Provence, Charles le Chauve, etc., <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> German Emperors (as Kings <strong>of</strong> Burgundy), and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bishops and<br />

archbishops down to 1413, as well as <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Counts <strong>of</strong> Lyons, who, with<br />

those <strong>of</strong> Feurs and Roanne, held <strong>the</strong> territory <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> See in <strong>the</strong> loth<br />

c. A denier <strong>of</strong> Conrad I., 911-18, was struck here. The privilege to <strong>the</strong><br />

archbishops dates from 1157, and this coinage lasted probably until <strong>the</strong><br />

royal mint was at length transferred, at <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> I5th c., hi<strong>the</strong>r, pursuant<br />

to an ordinance <strong>of</strong> Charles IV. so far back as 1413-14. Several<br />

specimens <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> money <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Counts <strong>of</strong> Lyons exist. A denier tournois<br />

<strong>of</strong> Henry IV., 1607, and a piece <strong>of</strong> 3 deniers <strong>of</strong> Louis XVI., 1791, belong<br />

here. There is<br />

money <strong>of</strong> necessity <strong>of</strong> 1 793. Comp. Bechevilain.<br />

Maccagno, Como, a mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mandelli family, I7th c. There is a<br />

gold zecchino, with <strong>the</strong> titles <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Emperor Ferdinard II. on rev., and on<br />

obv. Mon. N. Ai>. lac. B.C. Mac. Com. 7'a. Q.M.F., and <strong>the</strong> portrait <strong>of</strong><br />

Giacomo Mandelli.<br />

Macerata, States <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church, 21 miles from Ancona, <strong>the</strong> place <strong>of</strong><br />

coinage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> original feudal lords from <strong>the</strong> I3th c., and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> popes<br />

from Boniface IX. to Pius VI. An early grosso bears <strong>the</strong> standing figure<br />

<strong>of</strong> St. Julian.<br />

Macon, a mint <strong>of</strong> Philip<br />

I. <strong>of</strong> France (1060-1 103), <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dukes <strong>of</strong> Burgundy,<br />

and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Valois dynasty down to <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> I5th c.,<br />

when it<br />

seems to have been removed to Lyons, whi<strong>the</strong>r an ordinance <strong>of</strong> Charles<br />

IV., 1413-14, had already directed its transfer. Misconus, Mutiscon, etc.<br />

Madrid, <strong>the</strong> mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> later Kings <strong>of</strong> United Spain down to <strong>the</strong><br />

present time. The money struck for currency in Mexico, South America,<br />

and o<strong>the</strong>r colonial possessions, with or without <strong>the</strong> Pillars <strong>of</strong> Hercules,<br />

belongs here for <strong>the</strong> most part but<br />

; many, as <strong>the</strong> peso <strong>of</strong> Ferdinand VII.,<br />

1810, coined at Mexico, and that <strong>of</strong> 1821, coined at Zacatecas, etc.,<br />

formed an exception. M. crowned. Comp. Mexico.<br />

Maele, between Bruges and Ghent, now an insignificant village, but formerly<br />

a feudal fortress, and <strong>the</strong> seat <strong>of</strong> Louis <strong>of</strong> Crecy and his son Louis <strong>of</strong><br />

Maele, Counts <strong>of</strong> Flanders (1322-84). It was perhaps here, as well as at<br />

Bruges, Ghent, or Malines, that his extensive coinage in all metals was struck.<br />

Maesijck, Belgium, Prov. <strong>of</strong> Limbourg, 14 miles S.W. <strong>of</strong> Ruremonde,<br />

a mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> See <strong>of</strong> Liege in <strong>the</strong> i6th A c. \ ernestus <strong>of</strong> Ernest <strong>of</strong><br />

Bavaria, 1582, belongs here.<br />

Maestricht, or Vroenh<strong>of</strong>, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> seats <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Merovingian coinage<br />

under <strong>the</strong> moneyer Adalbertus, who also worked at Utrecht, Durstede,
