<strong>the</strong> 1 7th and i8th c. There was also a civic coinage. A mariengroschen<br />

<strong>of</strong> 1544 is mentioned by Sch., xx. 1183, as not known to Knyphausen.<br />

Probably <strong>the</strong> most remarkable piece minted here, as it doubtless was,<br />

was <strong>the</strong> four ducats in gold with <strong>the</strong> remarkable portrait <strong>of</strong> Charles V.,<br />

Hohenlohc, Honlve, Wiirtemberg, <strong>the</strong> seat <strong>of</strong> an ancient principality<br />

in Middle Franconia, <strong>of</strong> which <strong>the</strong> name occurs on a numerous and<br />

interesting series <strong>of</strong> silver and copper coins, but <strong>of</strong> which <strong>the</strong> princes had<br />

mints at no fewer than eleven places from <strong>the</strong> I4th to <strong>the</strong> igth c. :<br />

Neuenstein, Weickersheim, Forchtenberg, Gnadenthal, Langenburg,<br />

Kirchheim, Meinhard, Waldenburg, Unter-Steinbach, Schillingsfiirst, and<br />

Barenstein.<br />

Hohnstein, Meissen, Saxony, <strong>the</strong> probable source <strong>of</strong> a thaler <strong>of</strong> 1570<br />

with <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> feudal lord. Sch., xv. 1967.<br />

Holstein Mints: Itzehoe, Neustadt, Oldesloe, Ploen (1731), Ranzau<br />

(1650-68), Rendsburg, Steinbach (1600-20).<br />

Hamburg, Hesse, a mint <strong>of</strong> Sophia, Duchess <strong>of</strong> Brabant and<br />

Countess <strong>of</strong> Hesse, and <strong>of</strong> her son Henry, i3th c. (Moneta in Hon.}, <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> counts palatine, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Duke <strong>of</strong> Zweibriicken (1464), and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

landgraviat. The coinage was not numerous.<br />

Haarn, N. Holland, on <strong>the</strong> Zuyder Zee, a busy mint in <strong>the</strong> i7th and<br />

1 8th c., principally for <strong>the</strong> coinage <strong>of</strong> money destined for <strong>the</strong> Dutch East<br />

Indies.<br />

Horde, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mints <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dukes <strong>of</strong> Cleves, i5th c.<br />

Horn, Lippe, a mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Counts, I3th-I4th c.<br />

Horohausen, Prussia, a mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Abbey <strong>of</strong> Corvey in Minden,<br />

ioth-i2th c. The Emperors granted <strong>the</strong> abbey <strong>the</strong> right <strong>of</strong> coinage here<br />

as well as at Meppen and Hernburg.<br />

Horsens, Jutland, a Danish mint, I2th c. Hors.<br />

Hotter, Prussia, in <strong>the</strong> regency <strong>of</strong> Minden, a seat <strong>of</strong> coinage in <strong>the</strong><br />

i6th c. A mariengroschen <strong>of</strong> 1552 was struck <strong>the</strong>re.<br />

Huissen, near Arnheim, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mints <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dukes <strong>of</strong> CleVes, I7th c.<br />

Hungen, Hesse-Darmstadt, a mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> elder branch <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> house<br />

<strong>of</strong> Solms, which struck money here, as did <strong>the</strong> younger at Lich, Laubach,<br />

and Roedlingen, i6th-i8th c. A grosch <strong>of</strong> Ernst II., 1613, is cited by<br />

Schulman, xiv. 539.<br />

Huy, or Hoye, Belgium, a mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> prince-bishops <strong>of</strong> Liege in <strong>the</strong><br />

1 2th and I3th c. The mint-mark a lion. It was also an imperial mint.<br />

Ichora, an early Russian mint.<br />

Ilmenau, Saxe-Meiningen, a mining district within <strong>the</strong> ancient feudal<br />

county <strong>of</strong> Henneberg. There is a mining thaler <strong>of</strong> 1693 struck here, as<br />

well as o<strong>the</strong>r pieces.
