Hapsal, or Gapsal, Esthonia, a mint <strong>of</strong> Schleswig-Holstein and <strong>the</strong><br />

Harderwijk, Gueldres, a mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Counts and Dukes <strong>of</strong> Gueldres,<br />

and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bishops <strong>of</strong> Utrecht, 1 4th- 6th 1 c. There is a groot <strong>of</strong><br />

Arnould van Homes, Bishop <strong>of</strong> Utrecht, 1371-79, with Hdeivig. A<br />

thaler or gulden <strong>of</strong> Willem II., Duke <strong>of</strong> Gueldres, 1538-43, describes him<br />

as Duke <strong>of</strong> Juliers, Gueldres, CleVes, and Berg, Count <strong>of</strong> Mark, Zutphen,<br />

and Ravensberg, and Seigneur <strong>of</strong> Ravenstein. There is an interesting<br />

denier <strong>of</strong> Eleanor, daughter <strong>of</strong> Edward II. <strong>of</strong> England, and guardian<br />

<strong>of</strong> her son, Raynald IV., Duke <strong>of</strong> Gueldres, with <strong>the</strong> English leopard,<br />

belonging here. Later, this place was a mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Batavian Republic<br />

and for <strong>the</strong> Dutch East Indies.<br />

Hasselt, N. Brabant, near Lille, a mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mediaeval Seigneurs <strong>of</strong><br />

Laon and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bishops <strong>of</strong> Lidge, and a place <strong>of</strong> feudal and general<br />

coinage from <strong>the</strong> I2th or I3th to <strong>the</strong> i6th or i7th c. Copper money was<br />

struck here.<br />

Hasselt, Overijssel, a mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bishops <strong>of</strong> Utrecht and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Spanish rulers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ne<strong>the</strong>rlands. There is a i philippus <strong>of</strong> 1563 and<br />

similar pieces down to 1<br />

593 struck here in <strong>the</strong> latter series.<br />

Hattingen, a town in <strong>the</strong> dukedom <strong>of</strong> Cldves and county <strong>of</strong> Mark,<br />

near <strong>the</strong> Roer, only known at present from coins struck <strong>the</strong>re. It<br />

was <strong>the</strong> mint <strong>of</strong> Engelbert and I. II., Counts de la Marck, I4th<br />

small piece <strong>of</strong> Adolf, Count <strong>of</strong> Cleves, 1417-48, reads on rev. Moneta<br />

Hattenege.<br />

Hatton-Chatel, Verdun, a mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> early Bishops <strong>of</strong> Verdun.<br />

Henneberg, Saxe-Meiningen, <strong>the</strong> probable place <strong>of</strong> origin <strong>of</strong> some <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> coins <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Counts <strong>of</strong> Henneberg. But comp. Ilmenau.<br />

Henrichemont, previously called Boisbelle, Dept. <strong>of</strong> Cher, France, <strong>the</strong><br />

princely fief <strong>of</strong> Maximilien de Bethune, Due de Sully, <strong>the</strong> Minister <strong>of</strong><br />

Henry IV. <strong>of</strong> France, after whom it was named. The principality consisted<br />

<strong>of</strong> several properties, which had been independent and autonomous<br />

from <strong>the</strong> Middle Ages, and struck money Chateaumeillant, Borne,<br />

Boisbelle, Orval, etc. The right <strong>of</strong> Sully was recognised by Louis XIV.<br />

in 1644. In 1654 <strong>the</strong> Duke had a mint with a regular staff.<br />

Heresburg, a mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Abbey <strong>of</strong> Corvei or Corvey, Prussia, loth-<br />

I2th c.<br />

Herford, Westphalia, an early seat <strong>of</strong> local coinage and <strong>of</strong> conventionmoney<br />

between <strong>the</strong> Abbess and <strong>the</strong> town. There is a mariengroschen<br />

without date with Man. Domi. Et Cii'i. Herv. : and a piece <strong>of</strong> 12<br />

pfennigen, 1 670, reads Stadt Herford.<br />

Hermanstadt, a special mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Prince <strong>of</strong> Transylvania, while <strong>the</strong><br />

town was beleaguered by <strong>the</strong> Turks in 161 1. A piece, denominated Grossus
