Catalogue <strong>of</strong> <strong>European</strong> Mints 89<br />

Carrega, Naples, a concession granted to <strong>the</strong> Doria family <strong>of</strong> Genoa ;<br />

but no coins are known.<br />

Casale, a mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lords <strong>of</strong> Casale <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Palaeologos family (1380-<br />

1464), <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Marquises <strong>of</strong> Monteferrato (1464-1533), <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Emperor<br />

Charles V. (1533-36), and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Gonzage, Dukes <strong>of</strong> Mantua (1540-1697).<br />

Some very rare and important examples in gold, and several pieces interesting<br />

for <strong>the</strong> costumes, proceeded from this mint. In 1628 a piece <strong>of</strong> 12 reales<br />

was struck during <strong>the</strong> siege by Gongales, and in 1629-30, during that by<br />

Ambrogio Spinola, pieces <strong>of</strong> ^, i, 5, 10, and 20 florins, some being <strong>of</strong> more<br />

than one type. A quattrino <strong>of</strong> 1706, struck at Casale, has on obv. <strong>the</strong><br />

type <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Virgin and Child with <strong>the</strong> curious legend Divae Virginis<br />

Cretae.<br />

Cassel, a mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Counts, afterward Landgraves, <strong>of</strong> Hesse-Cassel.<br />

The earliest pieces have Comes, <strong>the</strong> later, Landgravi Hassie. Money in<br />

all metals was struck here after 1<br />

503, when <strong>the</strong> right was obtained from<br />

<strong>the</strong> Emperor to strike gold. Count Philip (1509-67) entered into <strong>the</strong><br />

monetary alliance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Rhenish provinces, and placed on his coinage<br />

<strong>the</strong> arms <strong>of</strong> Mayence, Treves, Cologne, <strong>the</strong> Palatinate, and Hesse.<br />

Castelbon, Navarre, a place <strong>of</strong> coinage authorised in favour <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Vicomte de C. in 1374 by <strong>the</strong> Duke <strong>of</strong> Anjou, <strong>the</strong> money to be <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

royal standard and similar to that <strong>of</strong> Lescun. Not known.<br />

Castel Durante. See Urbino.<br />

Castelnau, near Montpellier, <strong>the</strong> seat <strong>of</strong> a mint established by two<br />

ordinances <strong>of</strong> James I. <strong>of</strong> Arragon (1213-76) in 1273, for <strong>the</strong> coinage <strong>of</strong><br />

deniers and oboles <strong>of</strong> fine silver, each d. to be = 12 d. <strong>of</strong> Melgueil, and<br />

each ob. to be = 6 ob. <strong>of</strong> M. The regulations were ratified by his son<br />

and successor in 1277.<br />

Castelnuovo-di-Garfagnana, Barga, Italy, <strong>the</strong> probable place <strong>of</strong> coinage<br />

special grossetto struck in 1606 by Cesare d'Este, Duke <strong>of</strong><br />

Modena, in commemoration <strong>of</strong> his recovery <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> town and territory.<br />

The piece has on rev. St Peter standing and Prin. Garfignanae.<br />

Castelsardo, formerly Castel-Arragonese, Sardinia, a seigniorial fief <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Doria family, 1436-48.<br />

Castiglione dei Gatti, States <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church, a feudal seat <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pepoli<br />

family, who struck money elsewhere and perhaps also here.<br />

Castiglione del Lago, States <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church, a mint <strong>of</strong> Ferdinand II.,<br />

Grand-Duke <strong>of</strong> Tuscany, 1620-70. On a piece <strong>of</strong> 1643 occurs Cats.<br />

Castiglione delle Stimere, Lombardy, a mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Gonzaga family<br />

(1580-1723). Coins in all metals were struck here.<br />

Castro, States <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church, a mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Farnese family as Dukes<br />

<strong>of</strong> Castro (1545-47). There is a gold zecchino <strong>of</strong> Pier Luigi Farnese with<br />

P. Loisivs F. Dvx Cast., and o<strong>the</strong>r pieces in all metals.<br />

Cattaro, Dalmatia, a mediaeval mint <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> kingdom <strong>of</strong> Servia<br />

posterior to <strong>the</strong> incorporation in <strong>the</strong> nth c. <strong>of</strong> Bosnia and great part<br />

<strong>of</strong> Dalmatia. S. Tryphon, Cthren or Catarensi. St. Tryphon was <strong>the</strong><br />

patron <strong>of</strong> C., and early coins <strong>of</strong> Bosnia with his name and that <strong>of</strong> Cattaro<br />

were doubtless struck here for that province after its subjugation by<br />

Servia. A probable place <strong>of</strong> coinage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> colonial series struck for<br />

Dalmatia by <strong>the</strong> Venetians from <strong>the</strong> I4th to <strong>the</strong> I7th c. The grossetto<br />

and \ grossetto, <strong>the</strong> quattrino, <strong>the</strong> follaro, etc., were current in <strong>the</strong> province.<br />

There are also a franc and -franc 5 piece <strong>of</strong> base metal coined<br />

here by <strong>the</strong> French defenders during <strong>the</strong> war (1812-13).<br />

Celles-sur-Cher, <strong>the</strong> seat <strong>of</strong> a seigniorial coinage, uth-i4th c., in
