• In political science I have served as an undergraduate chair, director of the graduate program, chair of
the department, and repeatedly on all major committees (advisory, personnel, graduate admissions, and
multiple search committees).
• As an active member of the graduate department of anthropology I have served on many personnel
committees, search committees, doctoral committees, and have supervised dissertations.
• I was a member of the committee that founded Jewish Studies at Rutgers.
• I was on the search committee for the first chair, the search committee for the Laurie chair in history,
the executive committee, personnel committees, and was an active voting member of the department
since it was established.
• At the college level my primary involvement has been in the college honors programs. I have been
active in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences having served on the Departmental Chairs Committee, the
Appointments and Promotions Committee for Professor and for the highest rank at Rutgers (Professor
II), the nominations committee, the Study Abroad Committee, and I have represented FAS on the
University Senate.
• I have also represented the Graduate School on the University Senate.
• My major activity for the graduate school has been repeated service on the Fellowship Committee. At
the University level I have served multiple terms on the Senate, as a consultant on the University
Research Council, the President’s Coordinating Council on International Education, and the
President’s Commission on Undergraduate and Graduate Education.
• I have served other department’s of which I am not a member in various capacities. For example, I
served on the advisory board of the Rutgers Center for Historical Analysis and on various ad-hoc
personnel committees especially for promotion to the rank of Professor II (e.g., Africana Studies and
Sociology).
