Modules offered by the Department<br />
You will take either four or six taught modules, which will <strong>in</strong>clude HIST 401 <strong>in</strong> Michaelmas Term,<br />
and at least one of HIST 411, 412, 414 or 415 <strong>in</strong> Lent Term. If you are tak<strong>in</strong>g the 6:3 pathway, you<br />
must also take HIST 405 and either 451 or 452.<br />
The modules are designed to fit together such that students can construct the most appropriate stream<br />
of study for their <strong>in</strong>dividual research needs. A description of the modules with<strong>in</strong> the <strong>History</strong><br />
Department is given <strong>in</strong> the next few pages. Please register for your choice of modules with Mrs.<br />
Ghisla<strong>in</strong>e O’Neill, by complet<strong>in</strong>g the registration form or by email, as soon as you can after the<br />
<strong>in</strong>duction session and no later than 12 noon on Monday of week 1 (10 th October).<br />
N.B. if an option recruits fewer than 5 students, it may not be possible to run it as an<br />
<strong>in</strong>dependent unit but we will endeavour to <strong>in</strong>corporate as much module material as possible<br />
with other modules <strong>in</strong> order to accommodate <strong>in</strong>dividual student <strong>in</strong>terests.<br />
4:5 Pathway (four taught modules and a long dissertation)<br />
The core modules for the 4:5 pathway are:<br />
• HIST401: Research<strong>in</strong>g and Writ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>History</strong><br />
• HIST400: Dissertation (25,000 words)<br />
6:3 Pathway (six taught modules and a shorter dissertation)<br />
The core modules for the 6:3 pathway are:<br />
• HIST401: Research<strong>in</strong>g and Writ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>History</strong><br />
• HIST405: <strong>History</strong> for Life<br />
• HIST450: Dissertation (15,000 words)<br />
• HIST451: Research<strong>in</strong>g Medieval and Early Modern <strong>History</strong> OR<br />
• HIST452: Research<strong>in</strong>g Modern <strong>History</strong><br />
Both Pathways will choose from the follow<strong>in</strong>g 20 credit modules which must <strong>in</strong>clude at least one<br />
411, 412, 414 or 415:<br />
