A Policy Respecting the Issuance of Press Releases
RECOMMENDATION:
For Council’s consideration.
REPORT
The municipality is fortunate to have representatives from several local newspapers
attend the Council meetings and provide coverage of the events and issues of interest
to the residents.
At times, there are issues discussed by Council that require additional coverage or need
to be geared to a specific audience. One method of reaching a specific target audience
with a specific message is the issuance of a “Press Release”.
In the past, the municipality has not issued many press releases, and the only policy
that dealt with this issue was from 2001, which states:

Communications with Media
The Council, believing that it is important that the media be given correct
and timely information, establishes the following policies:
I. The designated spokesperson for the Council shall be the
Mayor, or in his or her absence, the Deputy Mayor.

All media enquires shall be handled by the Mayor, or in his
or her absence, by the Deputy Mayor. If of an administrative
nature, the designated spokesperson is the C.A.O.
If possible, the Council shall be involved in the formulation of
any Municipal news release.
