Lake Shore Senior High School
Bands return from National Competition
T
he Lake Shore Senior
High Bands, under the
direction of Mr. Eric
Blodgett and Mrs. Carrie
Poissant, had an extremely
successful competition at the
Performing Arts Consultant’s
National Music Festival
at the College of Staten
Island in New York City.
The students were on tour
from April 18, 2013 through
April 21, 2013.
Over the past fourteen years,
the High School bands have
competed nationally on seven
occasions and have produced
eight professional recordings,
with this year being
the ninth. With a great
deal of hard work and dedication,
the groups have always
done exceptionally
well and represented our
school and community with
pride. This year, the Symphonic
Band and Wind Ensemble
competed against
groups from across the country
and were adjudicated by
a panel of nationally renowned
judges. Both bands
placed first in each of their
classes, with Wind Ensemble
receiving the honor of Grand
Champions, an award given
to the highest scoring ensemble
throughout the entire festival.
Flute soloist, Emily
Gibbs, received the award
for best soloist out of any of
the instrumental soloists
from the festival. These accomplishments
join the
achievements from the past
which have included workshops
and clinics from professionals
such as David Lai
from the Phantom of the
Opera, Leslie Steifleman
from Chicago, Dr. James
Copenhaver from the University
of South Carolina,
Dr. David Waybright from
the University of Florida,
and the 9/11 first responder,
Chief Dan Daly. To date,
the Lake Shore High School
Bands have received three
top soloists, best section
award for percussion, two
grand champion awards,
multiple first place awards,
best in class awards, multiple
superior ratings, as well as
two students being selected
to participate on stage for the
Broadway musical, Chicago.
The students in the two senior
high bands enjoyed a
very educational yet exciting
itinerary in addition to the
music festival while in New
York City. Upon arriving to
New York City, students immediately
had a tour of the
American Museum of Natural
History, which former
Lake Shore alumnus and
Wall of Fame member,
Adina Williams assisted in
making possible for our students.
Students were able to
experience a subway ride,
Times Square and the “Top
of the Rock” at night, a motivational
speech with Chief
Dan Daly, a Liberty Cruise
to view the Statue of Liberty
and Ellis Island, a closed
sound check for the “Kings
of the Crescent City” Dixieland
band at the Jazz at Lincoln
Center, the Phantom of
the Opera Broadway musical,
and the “Sounds of the
City Music Safari” tour to
view the Lincoln Center and
other music and arts history
of the city, and the Radio
The Wind Ensemble
The Symphonic Band
City Music Hall Tour.
Along with a tour of this
magnitude comes a large financial
commitment from
the students and community.
We would like to thank all of
the friends, families, teachers,
administrators, Board of
Education members, and
community members for
your support with our find
raising efforts and are always
very grateful for your
continued support.
Catching the CC
Girls on the Run at J. T. Waugh
By: Mrs. Paula J. Eastman
“Catching the Common Core” was an evening event
held to share knowledge and information with local
pre-school teachers, who service children within the
Lake Shore Central School District.
The New York State Board of Regents adopted the
Common Core Learning Standards on July 19, 2010.
Now known as the NYS P-12 Common Core Learning
Standards for ELA and Literacy and the NYS P-12
Common Core Learning Standards for Mathematics.
These standards are designed for all students – English
Language Learners and Students with Disabilities,
beginning at the pre-school level. These pre-school
teachers, with a passion for working with young children,
were excited to be included in professional enrichment
where they were able to gain knowledge and
direction as they prepare for future instruction.
Teachers from the YMCA Pre-K Program, ECLC
(Early Child Learning Center) of the Seneca Nation,
Head Start in Derby, and an in home provider came
together to learn and exchange ideas of the Common
Core and the implications to their level. The event
launched the commitment for future learning opportunities.
The preparation of this event was a collaborative effort
between Paula J. Eastman, Principal of J. T. Waugh,
Jill Clark, Assistant Middle School Principal, Kellie
Rooth, A.I.S. Teacher at J.T. Waugh, and Jennifer
Philarom fourth grade teacher at Highland.
J. T. Waugh celebrated spring
with a group of 20 girls meeting
twice a week for an hour
and a half, which is made up
of lessons for personal growth
and RUNNING! The Girls on
the Run program was alive
and well at Waugh with girls
working together toward a
common purpose – a 5K.
Girls on the Run is a transformational
physical activity
based positive youth development
program for girls in 3rd-
5th grade. We teach life skills
through dynamic, interactive
lessons and running games.
The program culminates with
the girls being physically and
J. T. Waugh's mission to reach
out to the community continues
in May. During the month
of May, students in Mrs.
Amoia's third grade class,
collected dollars for
"footprints" to benefit the
walk for Multiple Sclerosis.
Students learned about Multiple
Sclerosis and with great
passion visited classrooms
speaking on behalf of this
ittle tiny beds, pint-sized pillows, small fuzzy
L blankets and miniature clotheslines have been
the order of the day in the Native American Title VII
room of J.T. Waugh; second grade students have
been busy for two months, Tuesday and Thursday
mornings, creating Stuart Little houses with the assistance
of Nancy Klemens, elementary Title VII Home
-School Liaison.
The students began the project by reading
Stuart Little, E.B. White, through the winter months
during the morning breakfast hour. As they were read
the chapter book by Ms. Klemens the students were
quizzed for reading comprehension and had lively
emotionally prepared to
complete a celebratory 5k
running event. The goal
of the program is to
unleash confidence
through accomplishment
while establishing a lifetime
appreciation of
health and fitness.
These girls not only accomplished
their 5K but a very
successful community service
project. The girls chose to
collect gently used towels and
blankets for the Buffalo Animal
Shelter. Their cause was
heard by the school community
and beyond. Members of
the GOTR team combined
disease. For the entire month,
students went classroom to
classroom each morning to
sell "footprints." These
"footprints" were hung around
the school. In the end, the
community service project
raised a total of $400.00 to
benefit MS research. Students,
teachers, and Mrs. Eastman
were super proud of their volunteer
efforts!
with their Girl Scout Troop to
increase the fold not to mention
the generous donations
made at the Brierwood Training
Center. Coaches Paula
Eastman, Lisa Smith, Laurie
Schultz, Allyson Mion, and
Monica O’Connor were
proud of all the girls.
Anna Sheehan, Shawn Browning,
Olivia Galvez, and Dylan
Nowak show the footprints.
Students create Stuart Little houses and accessories
Students show off their creations.
The GOTR Team with the
towels/blankets collected.
Project raises funds for Multiple Sclerosis
discussions regarding Stuart Little and what it would
be like to live the life of a tiny mouse in a big world.
The houses were created with teacherdonated
shoe boxes, scrap material, recycled items
from home and lots of modeling clay and popsicle
sticks. Fourth grade students also got involved by
hand-sewing miniature pillows and stuffing them with
cotton balls for their young friends.
The project was a big success and due to
popular demand it is likely it will become an annual
event for second grade students.
