Tracking Internet Sexual Predators
By Dirk Hutchins
Microsoft in this regard. The NGOs to which he refers are
Success is measured in many ways:

LAKER PLANET 4 TH EDITION SUMMER 2007
older than these young Portlanders but was able to keep
Putting “Human” in “Humanitarian”
up with them pretty well. (My nickname was "shosho"
which is Kenyan for grandma.) It is gratifying to see young
people wanting to make a difference in the world. They
kept a great sense of humor even when we donned
overalls and boots to clean up a garbage dump in the
Kibera slums (featured in Constant Gardener and on
By Lyla Pew Peterson
American Idol).
It's been life changing to have the opportunity to work with
non-profits the past five years. It's been my privilege to
travel to Honduras, Cambodia, Sudan, Uganda and Kenya.
The whole thing started in 2002 when our church went to a
village in Honduras as part of Partnership Ministries which
partners first and third world churches. We worked with
members who had been meeting under a tree. We ate two
meals a day together and were their helpers in constructing
a church. I always seem to get involved in medical aspects,
even if it's just cleaning simple wounds and applying
antibiotic ointment and Band-Aids. [Lyla is a nurse.]
It was a real jolt to see the living conditions---no electricity
or running water and people who didn't get enough to eat.
Our church developed a project with them to raise
chickens as an ongoing resource.
After I retired in 2005, I joined a Partnership Ministries trip
to Cambodia. It provided an opportunity to meet the child I
sponsor through World Vision. [See picture below.] A
group of women from Portland's Women of Vision visited
Phnom Penh, and they have adopted an after-care facility
for sexually exploited children in Cambodia. They have a
yearly auction to fund their projects; last year at the Mac
club they raised over $180,000.
When Diane heard about the Cambodian trip, she
connected me with our classmate Dirk Hutchins, who has
lived and worked in Cambodia for years. He still lives in
Thailand and works with Microsoft and the police to help
defeat sexual predators that use the internet for their
connections. It was great to touch base with him and find
out about his work.
Most recently I traveled with a new non-profit called Lahash
International, developed by a young man with a unique
vision of partnering people in the West with East Africans
who are working to address such issues as HIV, orphans,
widows, and poverty. He takes teams yearly to visit their
partners in Kenya, Uganda, Sudan, Rwanda and Tanzania.
We also spent time in orphanages gathering information for
the Lahash child sponsorship program, doing health
projects with children and people with leprosy and holding
a "deworming clinic” in a Kenyan slum.
My heart is still in Sudan and Uganda. Susan Tabia, a
Lahash partner has 3 orphanages in those countries plus
projects with 500 widows who are Sudanese refugees in
Uganda. They make beautiful baskets, clothing & jewelry.
We hope to develop a website to sell these items; all
proceeds would go to the widows.
When asked about the hardest thing on the trips---it would
probably be the same as for many of you who have
traveled in third world countries---"les toilettes." So many
places have awful toilets---usually just a hole in the ground,
with no toilet paper or washing supplies. One learns to
carry t.p. and sanitizer everywhere!
As far as communication---we have interpreters, but
especially in Cambodia and East Africa there are lots of
people who speak English. The children love to practice
and follow us everywhere saying: "Hi. How are you?"
Future plans: I hope to go back for 6 weeks in October to
work on health projects for the orphanages and am working
to get medications for the people with leprosy in Sudan.
This has been an exciting project and provides things to
work on both here and in Sudan and Uganda.
This has turned out to be long, but hopefully gives an idea
of the various ventures. I'm just thankful to have the health
and strength to do these things and to be able to enjoy my
six grandchildren as well!
The trips entail a lot of relationship building and support of
ongoing projects. Our home visits frequently involved
interviewing people affected by HIV/AIDS. I was much
Class of 1963 $cholar$hip
Larry Cable
An ad hoc group of our classmates has raised the
possibility of funding a scholarship for a deserving LOHS
graduate to help fund or defray college costs.
This is a really worthwhile idea, but we hope not to get into
too many deliberations and complications in trying to
accomplish our goals.
We would appreciate other committee members and any
and all ideas about the criteria the class wants in awarding
the scholarship should we be able to raise some money.
(Note: We’re working on qualifying donations for a tax
deduction.)
Please indicate your interest ---let us know about your
ideas through Laurel’s e-mail or phone listed below, and
they will be forwarded to the committee. Of course, the
"Committee" will soon try to put the pinch on for bucks. I
am happy to start the ball rolling with a fifty-dollar offering if
others indicate interest .Thanks for considering this idea,
and I hope all are well. ~ Larry
Pat Cooney Nida
More to think about…one of the things most folks liked
when we did the scholarship before was that we gave it to
a “regular” kid….to honor the fact that we are all important
in the class now. We let the principal and scholarship
committee make the decision, and they chose a kid who
had overcome difficulty.
This is also an appropriate place to contribute money to
honor a classmate or teacher who has passed away.
It is actually a continuation of a new class tradition because
we have given 2 scholarships already…one to the young
man in 2003 with money donated at the 40-year reunion,
and one to Van Swarthout’s daughter with donations in
Van’s memory. ~ Pat
Laurel Wilson Cookman
We successfully raised money for an LO Grad scholarship
in 2003 to the tune of $1000. Can we do it again and enjoy
ourselves at the same time? It would be a lot of fun to do
an auction at one of our reunion events. All ideas welcome.
LOHS Update
By Pat Cooney Nida
As most of you know, our beloved (if small and dark) high
school building gave way to a new HUGE LOHS a few
years ago…I talked to Principal Bruce Plato, and he sends
greetings to the class of ’63 along with an invitation to visit
the new building, in person or on the website
http://loh.loswego.k12.or.us/
Warning, bring bread crumbs so you can leave a trail to
find your way out...this building has both wings and stories!
Mr. Plato served for a year and a half in the “real” LOHS
building before moving to the palace, so he understands
our need to know about some of our favorite things.
The old school building was constructed in 1951 with
additions made in 1959, 1961, 1981, and 1990 totaling
193,588 square feet. The new building is 243,000 square
feet. Because the actual classroom size between the two
buildings is fairly similar, the biggest differences are larger
hallways, auditorium, and higher ceilings.
The School Seal was refinished and now hangs on the wall
in the entry, lest any unsuspecting freshman step on it.
The Bell is safe and sound---and well hidden from the folks
in West Linn. It comes out at football games (where it is
guarded at all times by the 8 biggest dads in the school)
and at graduation for pictures with grads and grannies.
Pilot Joe---after several years of being naked---has a new
outfit and once again appears at football games.
You will see by the stats below that, although the building
has changed, the school maintains its small class size,
student-teacher ratio, and high academic standards….and I
hear they still have a sports team or two.
If you haven’t strolled down A Avenue lately, here are a few
of the sculptures that now reside there. The artwork
epitomizes what my art instructor once told my class “Art is
good if it makes you feel something. You don’t have to like
it, in fact you may really not like it—but if it makes you feel
something it is a successful piece of artwork.” See what
you think.
could not read them—hence, no artist info available.)
UN-Real Estate
For waterfront*:
By Diane Dehner Reynolds
There were 19 active lakefront listings as of 5/20/2007:
Anyone who lives in the Portland area is probably aware of
Average List: $1,567,458.
the astronomical changes in Lake Oswego property prices.
Average Days on market: 90
Our classmate Sandy Reece Jernstedt has been a realtor
Average Square Feet: 3273
dealing in Lake Oswego homes for 29 years and kindly
High list: $3,395,000
provided insight into some of the specifics.
Low list: $ 795,000
Overall, she said the Northwest is a very strong market and
that it is “getting more and more expensive to live in
Oregon.” She noted the following trends:
• “Soil is expensive” which translates into big
houses on small lots.
• Real estate has been an investment that
appreciates 4-25% each year; the 80’s were the
only bad time.
• LO population is declining because younger
families can’t afford to live there.
• “Tear-downs”---people buy property in town for
$600K with the plan of tearing down the house
and re-building. On the lake, property intended to
be torn down goes for around 1.1 million dollars.
• Upper-end prices are commanded by lake
property with land, a view and privacy.
• Things that “sell” are fancy kitchens, fancy
bathrooms and fancy laundry rooms.
• Highest sale on the lake was $6.5 million. Many
sales are between three and five million dollars.
When I checked the Internet in April, I found 102 listings in
Lake Oswego with asking prices over a million dollars.
Sandy also indicated that condos are a hot market:
• In downtown LO they run $350-$400 per square
foot. She noted that this particular market “has
gotten crazy” because it’s only a 2-block walk to
the “Village.”
• Places just up the hill from LO (on the way to
West Linn) have also been converted to condos.
Sandy mentioned one newly desirable area is the West
Lake area near I-5 & the Mormon temple— near Kruse
Way. The subdivisions are appealing---flat with lots of
walking paths and good for little kids. They are attractive to
Nike/Intel employees because they are the closest
“neighborhoods.” They run around $800K for 3000 square
feet with lots of bedrooms and lots of baths.
I did some Internet research and found the following tidbits:
• Median price of homes sold in LO last year was
$549,850.
• The house that listed for $6.5 million had 10,000
square feet, 6 bedrooms, 7 full+ 2 half-baths. The
requested down payment was 1.3 million dollars;
the monthly payment was $31,177. Price per
square foot was $650.
5
Just for fun, I pulled a random sample of listings on streets
that sounded familiar. Obviously waterfront property had
the highest asking price. In no particular order:
1454 Glenmorrie $ 749,000
556 7 th St. $1,250,000
214 Ridgeway Rd. $ 235,000
16868 Bryant Rd. $1,395,000
3402 Lake Grove Av. $ 354,900
668 McVey $ 249,800
3889 S Shore $7,995,000
1066 N Shore $3,195,000
17475 Blue Heron $2,975,000
13286 Goodall Rd. $2,595,000
18106 SW Pilkington $ 949,900
1633 Maple St. $ 974,900
4673 Lakeview $ 999,000
690 9 th St. $ 859,000
2690 Overlook $ 888,000
1985 Country Club $ 939,000
12645 Boones Ferry $ 730,000
114 3 rd St. $ 729,900
5222 Carman $ 549,000
“In Memoriam”
As most of you know, we lost Van Swarthout, Ed
Waterbury and Diane Kenna within the last twelve
months. We received information based on the Social
Security Death Index that Bob Bruce and Jerry Glass
died in 1997 and 2001 respectively and have added them
to our “In Memoriam” list.
Class condolences go out to Jacque Wills and Joanna
Bennett on the deaths of their husbands; I am sure there
are others who have dealt with similar issues about whom
we have not received information. Lastly, our thoughts go
out to the many of you who have dealt with the recent
deaths of parents. These are not easy times.
We include the following tributes about some of our
classmates.

LAKER PLANET 4 TH EDITION SUMMER 2007
MARCIA BROWN
Josie Paulson
Although our paths occasionally crossed in high school and
college---and I had admired her artistic and musical talents-
--I never really spent much time with Marcia. As with many
other classmates, I lost track of her after college. In the
spring of '73, I happened to run into her mother who asked
if I was planning to attend the reunion in August; she was
trying to talk Marcia into coming up. I flippantly said that if
Marcia would come, I would go, too, and promptly forgot
my comment....Imagine my surprise several months later
when the phone rang and it was Marcia. She had flown in
and had our next evening and the reunion planned....so
there we went. It was such fun seeing everyone again,
catching up a bit and seeing how we had all changed (even
then). Marcia’s sense of fun and love of people was so
contagious! That was probably obvious to many, but that
night I also came to know how very warm and gracious she
could be. When I think of the first (and only) reunion I've
attended, I remember Marcia.
Jim Riddell
How do you describe a person as beautiful inside as out?
That would be the task when talking about Marcia who
always made you seem like you were special when she
talked to you. She always had time for you, never was too
important to not think about others, never let her beauty get
in the way of her being just a kind person. She died way
too young but while alive I think she left a mark on many
that has lasted a lifetime. Passing away so early made us
aware of just how short of time we all have. I think out of
the whole class she represents our class of ‘63 and what
our generation was about. Just a large loss. ~ Skeeter
BOB BRUCE & MARK ECKELMAN
Pat Cooney
Bob Bruce and Mark Eckelman, were both Drama
Kids…..Funny, Talented, Unique. What I remember about
Bob was that he was very kind and smiled a lot, and what I
remember about Mark was that he could play the piano like
no one else in the school! Of all the classes, Drama is the
class where I remember the most interesting classmates.
Mr. Powell—Jack Lee, as you know—was a wonderful
teacher, and people like Bob and Mark were an important
part of the mix of kids who made it memorable.
MARK ECKELMAN
John Oscarson
I was in the drama group headed by Jack Lee Powell. Mark
was one of our group, and it was my pleasure to be in
plays with him. He was always focused on the task at hand
and it was my belief, at the time, that he probably would go
on to do something in the entertainment field. If we have an
alumni variety show at our next reunion, we can all look
around and say, "Where is Mark Eckelman?"
John Oscarson
Andy was one of my close friends in high school.
We shared an interest in target shooting, and I can still
remember visiting him at his house; he showed me some
of his dad's collection of rifles in their basement--there were
so many that he stored them, on end, in a number of
garbage cans--about thirty to a can.
I lost touch with Andy after high school but vividly
remember that last time I saw him. I was 25 and had just
returned to Portland State after my year in Viet Nam--I
needed a few hours for my degree.
I had an old 1961 Ford Ranchero that I had
purchased just before my discharge in California and was
using it for my commute to school from my home in
Troutdale where my wife and I were living. On this
particular day, as I went to go home, my Ford refused to
start. As luck would have it, Andy was also walking to his
car on this day and he drove me home.
Andy had also served in the military and was
working on his Masters degree. I told Andy that I wanted to
invite him over for dinner so that he could meet my wife.
We were both busy and neither of us got around to
contacting the other.
Years later, at one of our reunions, I learned that
Andy had died just a few months after he had given me the
ride home from school. I regret that we had not met again.
Jim Harries
I remember most of the people on the list, which at our age
will too soon be longer. One stands out for me---Andy
Hemphill. We met at the beginning of LO Jr. High. He
showed me the wonders of Tryon Creek before it was a
state park. We’d hunt water skippers with our BB guns,
and I learned about stinging nettles. We went to college
together and then drifted. Unfortunately, his interest in
guns led to an early demise when things later looked bleak.
DIANE (DIDIE) KENNA
Pat Cooney
There’s one particular picture that lives in my high
school scrapbook. Three girls gathered around a 16 -
candle birthday cake. Didie for sure---and Janice Duke
and Janis Willenbring---but it could have been any of us.
Joyful and unlimited. All young, laughing---with pageboys
and round-collar shirts---forever caught at the peak of “our
16 th summer.”
For her whole life, Didie shifted between being a
glamour queen and being a flannel-shirt-outdoor-camping
woman, but she never really changed inside. She wore
Shalimar perfume until a week before she passed away—
only stopping because her last bottle ran dry---and yet was
the most competent outdoorswoman I’ve known.

LAKER PLANET 4 TH EDITION SUMMER 2007
She was kind, and mischievous, and knew all my
couldn't wait to get back to Lumberton, Texas, so she could
secrets—and I knew all hers! She could slalom ski, raise
try and find ways to help the victims of the New Orleans'
babies, and write poetry…and one of her last wishes was
hurricane disaster. She arrived just in time to help others
to go skinny dipping in the lake again. Rae Anna Lentz and flee from the next storm hit...direct on her town!
I think she made up the story that we three ran hand in
As the cancer spread again, she was having a
hand across her lawn, naked in a full moon and jumped off terrible time with her kidneys, bladder etc. Our precious
the dock. I say we didn’t do it because we were afraid of
Didie "hung in there" to the end, with an indomitable
the carp---and the 20 foot sturgeon. Rae says we didn’t do spirit of contagious love! Yes, she could indeed take
it because we were afraid of Mr. Kenna. But, Didie swore
the words of the Apostle Paul as her own... "I have fought
we did it…because she knew that if she thought it up, we
the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the
would probably follow her lead.
faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of
I hope Didie was right. I hope we did skinny dip in righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will
the moonlight when we were 16. Didie passed away on a
award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to
moonlit night, peacefully, and with her own sense of joy
all who have longed for his appearing.”
because she was tired of fighting the cancer and was ready
to “go home.” When I miss her, I just tell myself that
she’s just gone to the A&W and that I’ll see her soon….
And I know, when I do see her, she’ll be laughing and
talking about boys!
Jim Bunch
Didie was always a very special person. She was
one of a kind and a friend indeed! I have wonderful
memories of spending my sixteenth summer with my
precious friends Dick Gassner, John Turchi, and Patty
Cooney on Didie's lawn and in the lake at its edge. It was
there I gave my heart to P & D's best friend Rae Anna
Lentz. We would all be very close through our years at
LOHS. It took a KW dump truck and Gordy French to
separate Rae and me. However, the friendship with Didie,
Patty, John & Dick continued on. I remember visiting Didie
in Washington DC with my U of O roommate Nick Pappas.
We drove my Porsche to DC and caught Didie when she
was working for President Johnson. We enjoyed
seeing her so at home in that "high roller" environment.
The years flew by, and we always maintained
contact. She and my wife Sandy became super friends.
We were having Christmas popcorn with Didie & her
folks in their Council Crest home shortly before the terrible
accident that took her Dad and nearly killed her Mom.
Amazingly, Grace survived into her nineties. DD said, "I
always thought of my Dad was indestructible." So were the
rest of us 16 & 17 year old boys who had always
been worried about reaping the wrath of Mr. Kenna!
It was great to see DD give her life to the Lord,
and go from "talented barstool singer" to an anointed
instrument of "The One" she so faithfully served for so
many years. We have all been blessed by her "Tiny Tea"
book series and so much wonderful stuff she produced to
glorify God and edify so many lives.
When we were last together here in Birmingham,
England, she was taking that special trip, with the belief
that her cancer had been healed. What a wonderful "eye
of the storm" that was for her. As a matter of fact, she
7
Jim Riddell
I remember when Didie was just a little girl, all the years
through grade school at Our Lady of the Lake, talking on
the phone all night when Ike was elected, and it was on the
TV. I lived on West Bay and she lived by the dam. The
private subjects you know about people that you have
known all your life. Her father was a stand up guy---he
really stood up for me one time when know one else did.
We always wonder what it is going to be like to see God---
she now knows. I hope she puts in a good word for us who
will be along soon. ~ Skeeter
SUSAN PETREY
Lyla Pew
I remember moving to Lake Oswego and going there only
my senior year. Susan Petrey was such a loving friend and
welcoming person---one of the first I got to know, and our
friendship lasted several years after graduation. She was a
very sweet and creative person and is greatly missed.
Mary Yoder
Susan Petrey was such a fantastic science student; she
made biology seem so easy!
VAN SWARTHOUT
Josie Paulson
I had known Van in high school through school committees
and participation in the Model UN at U of O, but not well.
We reconnected at that first reunion. It was a changing
time in Van's life. He was in the process of returning to
Portland and taking a job with one of the city councilmen,
living initially with his parents in Mountain Park. His sister
had passed away from cancer the previous year, and he
and his parents were still grieving. Like Van, I had some
challenges of my own. (After the reunion I had been
traveling and fallen down a flight of stairs in London.) Yet,
through that fall and winter, his kindness and support for
me, his GREAT and mischievous sense of humor, were a
constant. As the years went by, usually when I didn't show

LAKER PLANET 4 TH EDITION SUMMER 2007
for a reunion, I would hear from him and we would catch up ED WATERBURY
a bit...How he loved his daughter, his family! Here is a bit of David Berentson LOHS ‘62
witticism: Van told me that his mother once asked him what Edward I. Waterbury, Jr. died June 27, 2006, of a stroke
he wanted to be when he grew up. He answered, "Either a caused by diabetes. Ed attended most of Oregon’s
priest or a garbage man." Puzzled, she asked why. Van's
institutions of higher learning: Oregon State University;
answer: "Because they know everything about everybody." Portland State University; Willamette University; and the
Van was a "people-person extraordinaire" and perhaps a
University of Oregon plus the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn.
born politician!
John Oscarson
I don't think it would be an exaggeration to say that I never
talked to anyone at school who did not like Van. He was
the closest to "every-man's" friend that I ever met. Sadly,
when he had his medical problems last year there was
nothing that anyone could do to really make him well. While
I will not have the privilege of visiting Van again, there is
not a day that goes by that I don't think about him. When
Van died I inherited his dog “Brown Eyes,” and she has
become an integral part of our household. It is hard to
believe that she is now 16 years old. She is an Alaskan
Eskimo, small dog breed, and she thinks that she rules. I
don't think it is possible for a dog to develop so much
personality without the kindness of a loving owner. ~John
Diane Dehner
Van’s father and mine taught together at Portland State,
and the families lived close by. Van, Tony Kirchhof, Mark
Adams, Bruce Ward and I frequently studied together---
often in the den at Van’s home. One day Mrs. Swarthout
became concerned because the den door was closed; she
then called my mother to alert her that my reputation might
be at stake. Needless to say, the door stayed ajar ever
after. ~ Diane
Nancy Owen
This last year I have lost 5 dear friends all within a few
months of each other. But the memory of the loss of dear
Van probably hurts the most. We love ya’ Van! I know you’ll
be there in spirit with us at our 45 th !
VAN SWARTHOUT & DIANE (DIDIE) KENNA
Dean & Janice Duke Pindell
Regarding Van and DeeDee. They were both very special
people who shared a common trait. No matter how long it
was between opportunities to see them, the old feelings of
friendship were immediately present and being with them
was just like old times. Although both their lives had ups
and downs with health and other issues, their outlook was
positive and they were always concerned about how other
people (or you) were doing. They were outstanding assets
to the Laker Class of '63 and a blessing to the lives of
others with whom they came in contact.
In his first year of college, at OSU, Ed majored in forestry
and worked his way through the year as a Corvallis
fireman. He hated the year and ever after referred to
Corvallis as "the armpit of Benton County." Ed had to
decide what he was really interested in and realized that it
was architecture. He was a fine artist and became a fine
architect through his education at the U of O. Less than a
decade after graduation, Ed was elected President of the
SW Oregon chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
He became a leader in green construction and
hospital/medical facility design. Throughout his life, Ed was
the same athletic, witty and handsome classmate you
remember.
LAKER HOUSEKEEPING
informal get-togethers. John Willis has been a stable
Thanks to the 103 of you who contributed updates. This
source of ideas about things to include in the newsletters
has certainly been a year of ups and downs as we continue and who-knows-what in the LO area (and not above
to face health issues, deaths of parents and classmates.
twisting an arm or two); he and Jim Riddell offer some of
On the other hand, people are retiring like crazy and report the best encouragement this side of Oregon City.
enjoying their families, volunteer work, travel and other
Thanks to the active participation of our class and the
webmeistership of Steve Strecker, we are now entering the
third year of our highly successful www.LAKERS63.com
Pat Turner keeps on keeping on with helpful follow-up
utilizing her stash of LOHS memorabilia. Marcia Patrick,
Tom (Rogers) Rodrigues and Linda Kurtz sent in old
school pictures that tickled our memory as people tried to
name those oh-so-young faces. Jim McCullough solved
the mystery of the “Oswego School” name.
• We’ve had over 8500 hits.
• Photos of 130 Classmates have appeared.
• Past editions of the newsletter can be accessed
via links on the “Reunions/Announcements” page.
• A link to our yearbook pictures should be up this
summer as well.
• Members of 5 other LOHS classes have contacted
us asking for help developing their own sites.
Thanks to those of you who’ve gone along, supported us
financially and made it happen.
By Jove I think we’ve DONE it!
Class Cooperation
This was a banner year not only for reconnecting with lost
classmates, but for lots of cooperation between our class
and the classes of 1961, 1962, 1964 and 1965. E-mails
flew back and forth as we traded tips and information on
our website, newsletter, reunions and help locating
members of our class through assorted siblings. Carolyn
Shipley, ‘64 has been made an honorary member of LOHS
’63 in return for her unflagging interest and help in being
what one classmate termed a “sleuth extraordinaire.” Also
deserving of thanks are Gayle Frey, Ray Pardo and David
Berentson from ’62; Diane Rosa, ’64; Candee Clark ’65,
Carol Church ’61 and Scott Hewett ‘66.
Gold Star Division
As always, we are indebted to classmates for their help
and support. During the last twelve months, the following
classmates have contributed time, talents and suggestions
for the good of the group.
With the assistance of Lynn Newell in cahoots with
Carolyn Shipley, ’64, we have located most of our missing
classmates. For us it reinforces the importance of
maintaining bonds that we all forged long ago. Pat
Cooney has never lost her zeal for helping the class. In
addition to being our conduit for LOHS info and graciously
writing the article about the current scene, she throws great
tea parties for our classmates’ memorial services and
9
On the newsletter article front, we are grateful to Lyla Pew
and Dirk Hutchins for taking the time to share their
experiences; to Larry Cable, Pat Cooney, and Laurel
Wilson for resuscitating the idea of a class scholarship and
for drafting the newsletter piece; and to Sandy Reece for
supplying information on the almost unrecognizable real
estate market in our old home town.
Thanks as well to classmates who sent in memorial tributes
for classmates who are no longer with us.
Janet Williams and George Robinson put on their
thinking caps for past and future newsletter questions.
Steve Strecker bailed us out when the website got stuck in
technical limbo. Ron Bennett amazes us still with his
photographic ability and archives. His website
http://ronbennettphoto.com/Classpix/index.html brought
back lots of memories.
Huge colorful bouquets go to the financial supporters of
this Laker Planet endeavor. The following people opened
their pocketbooks to defray the costs of contacting
classmates without e-mail to keep them in the loop: Barb
Bohlman, Janet Brobst, Carole Brown, Larry Cable,
Suzie Goddard, Doug & Scott Hewett (‘66), Pat
Johnson, Pat Kelley, John Oscarson, and one generous
anonymous donor.
George Robinson commented that “We're largely new to
each other now, having lived so much of our lives apart.” It
is our hope that the answers to the assorted newsletter
questions will provide a fun glimpse into what makes each
of us tick and help pave the road for our in-person
connections at next year’s reunion.
Lastly, thanks to everyone who sent input when asked,
submitted pictures for the website and updates for this
publication. We greatly appreciate your good humor in
playing along with us.
Have fun catching up on everyone’s doings!
Classmate Updates
MARK ADAMS
Last Year Life was fairly uneventful during the past year -- which is not all bad! We didn't travel far, but took some nice little
trips to Disneyland, Ashland, San Francisco, and Bandon Dunes for golf. I qualified as an arbitrator for the NASD, and I began
teaching beginning Spanish at the community college. We celebrated our 15th wedding anniversary at Semi-ah-moo resort
near the Canadian border. I coached my daughter's teams in soccer and softball. We brought home an exuberant Australian
Shepherd puppy last spring, but after 7-8 months of trying to civilize him, threw up our hands and found him another home with
more room to roam and more time and patience to devote to him. We hear he's matured a great deal and finally become the
wonderful dog we had expected. Just recently, my mom suffered a heart attack that put her in hospital for more than a week.
That event, and her gradual recovery, have proven the adage that "life is what happens when you're implementing plans."
Meet Spouse/Partner I met my spouse, Kit, more than 20 years ago at the court of appeals. I was court commissioner, and
she was a fledgling prosecutor who began appearing in court. Several years later, when both of us were single, I "cold called"
her on the Fourth of July for a date. We had a nice time and things evolved from there.
Earliest Memory Probably riding my tricycle and using our backyard slide and wading pool when we lived on SE 28th St. in
Eastmoreland, before moving to Oswego in 1951.
Addresses I count 17, and might be forgetting one or two.
Changing Political Views Despite having lived in Berkeley for three years, my political views haven't changed much. I'd
describe myself as a moderate Republican, more conservative on some issues, more liberal on others. My wife is more liberal
than I, except on issues relating to crime, where her prosecutorial duties have convinced her that courts and legislatures are
way too soft-headed.
Before I Die The one thing I hope to do before I die is to bring about World Peace. . . oh, wait, I was thinking for a minute that
this was the Miss America Pageant. All seriousness aside, I hope to reconcile with my estranged daughter.
Time Capsule In a time capsule I would place the works of Shakespeare, which are increasingly not being taught in schools
and colleges; a printed newspaper, which decades from now will be extinct; and the owner's manual for a new automobile,
which will prove that, once upon a time, people really did get around in vehicles that burned petroleum.
~ I look forward to seeing the more interesting material provided by some of my classmates. Mark
JUDY ARNETT Canja
Last Year I thought I had retired but an offer from PSU to teach again lured me back into academia where I will be for at least
one more year.
Meet Spouse/Partner On a blind date in Washington, DC. We were married two months later, and this June 25th will be our
30th anniversary...lucky us.
Earliest Memory Taking the ferry from Anacortes, WA to Victoria, BC. I believe my mother told me I was about 3 years old.
Addresses At last count, over two dozen. I have lived on the East Coast, the Southeast (Alabama), Southwest (New Mexico),
Mountain States of Colorado and Wyoming and at least half a dozen moves just within Oregon. This movement wasn't all my
fault as my husband and I both had jobs that required frequent transfers.
Changing Political Views I think I have mellowed some.
Before I Die Get my pilot's license...something I started about 20 years ago.
Time Capsule Pictures of my children and family, of course, and a pinch of soil from my husband's native land, Transylvania,
Romania (this is a standing joke in our family).
BOB BARNES
Last Year My life has been going pretty well actually. I've been told I was flirting with death a couple times, but that makes it
even more precious. My health has stabilized to just semi-lousy, but I swim almost every day, play poker, putter, and get ready
to go fishing a lot.
Meet Spouse/Partner Tammy took a hunter safety class from my father when she was 14 years old. I thought she was pretty
neat then, and I still do 44 years later.
10

LAKER PLANET 4 TH EDITION SUMMER 2007
Earliest Memory Either sitting on my grandpa’s knee, seeing my mother naked in the shower, or running across the yard in my
new sailor suit. I can’t remember which was first, but it was just before I turned three. Maybe it was catching bees on clover
blossoms with my hands until one stung me. That’s a tough one. I'm not getting senile. I just have a lot to remember.
Addresses There were a couple brief periods when I didn’t have an address at all, but I think I remember at least 16. I have
three addresses right now.
Changing Political Views I’ve been liberal, anarchist, anti-government, extremely liberal, semi-conservative, patriotic, and just
plain lost. Not necessarily in that order. My political views are mostly absent now.
Before I Die I’m doing it now. I go fishing a lot, play a little poker, and eat good food. Take your pick. I do pretty much what I
want within my limitations.
Time Capsule A dictionary, a physics text (preferably Tipler’s) and a laptop computer. I guess you could put it all on the laptop
along with a URL for the Library of Congress, and throw in a can of beer and a pack of Marlboros. Hopefully the cigarettes
would be an oddity and the beer cold when it was opened. ~ Have a great day, Robert & Tamara Barnes
RON BENNETT
Last Year Very well. I'm winding down to retire in a couple of years, making plans to travel and set up our two homes on East
and West coast. We had two more granddaughters this past year (we are blessed). We traveled a lot.....plus I got my wife to
ride horseback on a working ranch in Arizona and took her to some black tie White House events. Getting my fine art
photography together to sell when I retire.
Meet Spouse/Partner In a park.
Earliest Memory The end of WWII with the soldiers coming home, and my first ride on a horse on my uncle’s ranch. Living in
Portland and the iceman for our ice box (would chip ice off for us to suck on) and vegetable man (would give us fresh rhubarb)
with horse-drawn wagons. The milkman brought glass bottles to the front door. We watched TV, Roy Rogers, etc. in the
afternoon with all of the neighborhood kids.
Addresses Lake Oswego/Portland, OR; Los Angeles/ Manhattan Beach/Malibu, CA; New York, NY, Washington, DC, Reston/
Annandale, VA, San Diego, CA, Alexandria/Springfield, VA.
Changing Political Views More conservative. Worked with 10 Presidents---7 as a White House Photographer.
Before I Die Travel and see where I went in the past 40 years. I have traveled to most countries in the world but have not had a
chance to see them as a tourist (I was always working and saw airports, hotels and places no one else goes to). Plan on some
RVing, shooting fine art photography and fishing. Have a lot of fun with my wife, children and eight grandchildren. Serve Jesus.
Time Capsule My pictures which cover history for the past 40 years.
BOB BEVAN
Last Year Life has been good to Gretchen and me this past year. We travelled to Rio to visit Miriam Correo, former exchange
student from LOHS class of '61 who is suffering with cancer. She actually was doing quite well, considering. We travelled south
to Buenos Aires for the week and thoroughly enjoyed Argentina. We’re about to take a trip to Maui with a group of friends that
will likely decline into a wine fest. We've had the recent addition of our 9th grandchild, Grace Eden. I've decided to
retire January 2008, finally; and we've been preparing for that.
Meet Spouse/Partner You know how Gretchen and I met. After a long hiatus, we reconnected in Med School and married
when I was a sophomore there.
Earliest Memory My earliest memory was being hit in the head with a rock by my jerk neighbor Billy Reilly. I'm still looking for
that guy and his creepy dog Blackie.
Addresses We've since lived in Phoenix; Tucson; Columbus, Georgia; returned to Phoenix and moved to Paradise Valley, AZ
where we've been the past 24 years. ~ Cheers, Bob
TERRY LYNN BOCKES Figueras
Last Year I'm still a widow, 6 years this past January. My family is spread all over: Dr. Dominic Figueras in Ridgefield,
Washington; Lynette Spievak in Santa Barbara, California; and Tana Thomas family lives in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania.
Just spent a month with Tana to help during the birth of my 8th grandchild.
My parents (age 87& 88) still live in Durham, Oregon. They are still driving and pretty active but have their health
issues. As my families grow and parents age, it seems like I travel around a lot. Easier for the one of me to travel to them or
share a vacation or activities.
On the home front I manage three Trusts; I work at the PGA Buick Golf Tournament at Torrey Pines in January---will
work & host the US Open Golf Tournament in June 2008. I had reconstructive surgery in May, hosted Precincts and worked the
election polls in June & November, and worked the San Diego International Junior World golf tournament in July.
LAKER PLANET 4 TH EDITION SUMMER 2007
Since September have had ceiling & flooring upgrade, recarpeting & painting projects. No easy task for a single gal to
weed out, move furniture and empty every single room and garage. I'm learning the hard way to change my lifetime attitude of
"saving things." One certainly accumulates a lot of STUFF over the years. And some day I'll have to deal with my parents’
STUFF and their lifetime of "saving everything."
I'm still playing some bridge & a little golf. I love dancing with the Cabrillo International Folk Dance group and serve as
publicity chairman. I get my exercise and have trimmed down to within 12 pounds of my college days. I still do sewing &
beading, stamp & coin collecting and a little reupholstering. I try to keep up with computer & E-mails but with all the travel or
my computer in the shop, my communications haven't been very good this past year. My resolution is to do better in 2007.
I've also had lots of family & visitors. Of note: Eduardo Figueras (1 of top 5 in world, shrimp specialists in implementing
production & research) and his family visited as they moved from Yucatan Mexico to Brunei Southeast Asia.
In September I lost my 24 year old niece--a nurse who died in a plane crash on the way to Mexico to volunteer with the
Medical Mission Ministries. Brianne Shelton had touched many people in her shortened life---over 580 people showed up at her
memorial service---and another 60 at a candlelight service by the hospital where she worked.
Meet Spouse/Partner No spouse or partner. Have tried a little dating this past year or so. Been on the courting agenda of a
man who lives in Oregon (widowed same month & year as myself). Long distance communications these days are good but a
relationship is crazy---especially considering he has 11 kids (4 still live at home, youngest is 13). Four others (2 men, 2 women)
are serving in military capacities, Army Special Services, Navy Submarine service, Army dental and Navy nurse. Thus I'm well
aware of both sides of the spectrum.
Earliest Memory My memory at about 20 months was Mallard Ducks printed on green draperies in a new room addition.
Addresses Still live in same San Diego home---34 years (6th of other places since high school).
Changing Political Views The real truths of our country's efforts to get rid of the terrorists, defend and promote peace
and human rights in addition to our freedoms in hotspots worldwide. I shudder at the political attitude and media treatment that
prevails at home. I'm fearful that this will promote another post-Vietnam mentality. We should respect, appreciate, and give our
patriotic allegiance, as well as count our blessings for all the efforts and sacrifices made both currently & in history. I believe
in smaller government, original intents embodied in our Constitution & Bill of Rights, honest real representation of citizens, fewer
taxes, English-only & access to affordable higher education. I DO NOT believe in dumbing down America, nor any
gerrymandering of / or amnesty programs. I don't believe moral issues should be politicized or legislated.
Before I Die I’m not thinking about dying yet so can't answer the question.
Time Capsule I figure I have a few years left to think about contributions to a time capsule.
~So I leave you with a catch-up summary of my life, my thoughts and concerns. I count my blessings and offer my fondest wish
& prayers to all of you for a healthy, happy & prosperous future.
JANET BODDY Reinsaloder
Last Year My life has gone very well actually. I became engaged in February, 2006 & was married in June. My new husband,
a retired dairy farmer, is truly a delight to live with. We enjoy many of the same interests, especially riding ATV’s and enjoying
the beautiful country in the Northwest.
Meet Spouse/Partner I met my husband through mutual friends. About 2-1/2 years after the death of my first husband, they
introduced Ted to me. They invited him the 100 miles or so from his home to my home where we went on a 4-wheeler ride on a
trail not far away. We had a barbeque supper after the ride, & he asked if he could give me a call. We talked a lot on the phone
& dated for about a year before he proposed.
Addresses I count 8 different addresses from Oregon to New Jersey to Montana. Actually 11 if you count two addresses during
college & one address when I was in India for 6 months in 1966-67.
~I think that’s all for now. Janet (Boddy) Reinlasoder
BARBARA BOHLMAN Sonniksen
Last Year My life this last year has involved volunteering for several groups attempting to motivate residents to get involved in
the community as we have had 800 acres added to the Urban Growth Boundary in our area. We were able to be included in the
Washington County Planning Process and since developers before had "free rein" in the County; this is a new concept for the
officials also. Part of my time has been spent on the Tualatin Hills Trails Advisory committee to try to ensure upkeep on the trails
and plan for them in the 800 acres before the Housing Developers just leave us leftover land which has no connection to parks
or schools or transit lines.
We've spent time in Scotland and vicariously following our daughter's development of a dissertation for her Masters
and her tales of travel and Edinburgh life. We also went for a cruise to Mexico during the rainy days of late February. Also we
spend time down at our beach property fixing elk torn fences and removing brambles and fallen trees.
LAKER PLANET 4 TH EDITION SUMMER 2007
However, more importantly, with my work with concept planning and community composition, I must take a moment
and thank you and Dianne for all the work you have done in recreating a community we all shared forty years ago. When I see a
picture of someone or hear about their families it rekindles great memories for me and something that I valued so long ago. I'm
sure others feel the same way. Keep up the great work. Sincerely, Barb Sonniksen
BARBARA BOWLING Dunnahoe [Excerpt from an e-mail]
Barb e-mailed to let us know that she falls in the “alive and kicking” part of the class. As are many classmates, she said she’s
dealing with parental health issues balanced by the joys of being a grandparent. “We just built a playhouse for [granddaughter]
Eliza! Such fun!”
MIKE BRAY
Last Year Lots of good things happened over the last year. Our son Jim and his wife Nicole had twins in December. Nicole
gave birth December 15th to Maddox and Makai Bray. The boys are fraternal twins and are very healthy, happy little babies.
Carolyn and I traveled to Bali and Wakatobi, Indonesia for a scuba diving trip in October. Wakatobi is an underwater
photographer's dream, and the resort is really first class (even though located in a very remote spot).
Meet Spouse/Partner Carolyn and I met at a nightclub in Honolulu in 1970. Carolyn was a flight attendant for United Airlines,
and I was a sales rep living near Waikiki.
Earliest Memory Watching my big sister catch the school bus and wondering why I couldn't go with her.
Addresses 10 different addresses, although the last one has been home for 31 years.
Changing Political Views Modest skepticism to total skepticism.
Before I Die I haven't thought of it yet.
Time Capsule A copy of the movie "American Graffiti," a Pez dispenser and a skateboard.
BILL BROCKHAUS [Excerpt from an e-mail]
[The] questions [are] just like those writing assignments in HS --- wait to the last minute and hope for the best. Employment =
work (and that's a 4-letter word). Actually I have several irons in the fire (so to speak) but nothing firm just yet. So, in the
interim Julie and I are doing a lot of re-modeling projects on a townhouse we bought in CA about 3 years ago. I am learning lots
about construction and making sure I keep all my fingers and toes in the process. ~ Cheers, Bill
CAROLE BROWN Tinker
Last Year We will celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary in June. Our kids want to plan a trip to Europe for us to celebrate
that event (as they don't think we would ever get around to it). I still travel to Lake Oswego about every 2 to 2-1/2 weeks to
check on my Mom. She will be 89 in October and still lives in the house I grew up in.
Addresses Our family must not like change because George and I are still in our original house after 37 years.
Before I Die Before I die, I would like to convince George to move back up to the Portland area since our kids are located in
Tigard and Sherwood.
~The other questions would require too much reflection today. Bye, Carole
JIM BUNCH
Last Year Of course, we've been really busy! We have been busy with setting up some "Married for Life" courses for
couples. After getting a number of other folk to catch the vision of the need for such a ministry, we led a course with six other
couples from October to February, simultaneously with another similar group. All fourteen couples were greatly blessed by the
solid Biblical teaching practically applied in their marriages. In February we left for the USA, where we spent six weeks visiting
our family (son Corey and his Brazilian wife Suzi and two children, Jennyfer & Samuel have moved to Beaverton from Cuiaba,
Brazil), friends, and supporting churches and individuals. We are starting an "International Friendship House" in Birmingham,
which is a "Drop-in-Centre" for overseas folk; mainly college age. It is a kind of fishing pond for our churches to meet, make
friends and love overseas students, and others, into the Kingdom of God.
Meet Spouse/Partner Sandy and I met at the A&W Root Beer Stand on South Willamette in Eugene while I was a student at
the U of O and she at Northwest Christian College. I was a cook and soda jerk while she was a car hop, taking my food and
drinks on trays to customers. We would serve large and regular drinks and somehow she became my "Regular Girl"! I bought
a Red '64 Porsche during that time and blew it up in Eugene, running the gut on Willamette. We would ride my faithful Honda
over to the mechanic and sit in my car while it was being repaired. Very romantic!
Earliest Memory My Mom going off to the hospital to bring home my Brother Bob. I was just 27.5 months old and 27.5 months
younger than my sister! Interesting! Next was picking up a leaflet dropped from an airplane that won me two cans of paint from
13

LAKER PLANET 4 TH EDITION SUMMER 2007
Ray's Hardware. I painted my bike red & white! Next memory was kissing Marcia Brown under the swings at Forest Hills
Elementary, about 1950! I may have been the only boy at her birthday party that year. Does Marcia remember, or was this a
childhood dream?
Addresses 16. WOW, thanks for reminding me to look back!
Changing Political Views I've become much more bipartisan in my political convictions!
Before I Die I would love to see the return of the Lord in the clouds (that could be below, if I'm flying!)
16For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God,
and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet
the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. 18Therefore encourage each other with these words. 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18
NIV Bible. We keep looking up and listening for the SHOUT!
Time Capsule The hard drive from my computer with all those pictures from much of my life; my Bible ('cause it'll never be out
of date... unless I do hear that SHOUT!), a copy of C.S. Lewis' "Mere Christianity" that has been such a powerful tool for God to
bring thinking people, like myself, to contemplate God and discover Jesus as their Lord and Savior! "Mushy" Christian stuff, but
solid as a rock, and continues to bring real purpose, satisfaction and hope to Sandy and me and our life together, beyond the
Root Beer.
MARY BUTLER [Excerpt from an e-mail]
It’s 20 days to retirement! Until that day I’m afraid it will be near exhaustion but retirement’s very close. Take care and enjoy
Last Year Have been working more than I expected and trying to stay on a pretty hard exercise schedule for the likes of me.
Younger son, Abe, got married in Montana. Bought a sort of dream car for me - pretty silly in a way but just could not resist.
Meet Spouse/Partner I met Gayle at a New Year's party.
Earliest Memory Swinging on a tire swing that my Mother says never existed. I claim it did and she is starting to forget things
in her ninth decade. (I would bet on Mom.)
Changing Political Views Liberal to conservative and now toward the middle due to George.
Before I Die Pretty much done and had what I hoped to do and have - and more. Very lucky.
Time Capsule A favorite picture of Grandson when he was about five months old; an article my younger son wrote about how
he grew up in a family that talked a lot about Elvis Presley at the dinner table; and, a copy of the Sermon on the Mount and the
Diamond Sutra as I cross-referenced a few years ago.
GINNY CAMPBELL Adelsheim
Most recently, I organized several projects that are dear to my heart. One was the farewell banquet at Contemporary Crafts
Museum and Gallery where I got my start back in 1970. They are moving and expanding to the Pearl. The other event on April
14, called Animals in Search of an Ark, was at Thurman Street Studios where I work. It was one of 1400 events nationwide
sponsored by Step It Up, an organization dedicated to fighting global warming. Our focus was on educating people about
endangered animals and their habitats. It included an art exhibit by local artists of pairs of animals in various media, workshops
for kids, a lecture by the expert on endangered butterflies from the Oregon Zoo, and lots of info about the impact of global
warming on animals and what we can do to help the planet. I love being back in Lake Oswego only 6 blocks from where I grew
up. I can walk to Mary's Woods where my folks live. My house has a big yard with lots of beautiful trees and flowers and space
for my four cats. I'm putting in a veggie garden and trying to keep up with the mowing. Lizzie, my daughter, is still living in Paris,
teaching English, studying and playing the cello. She is working on her PhD in philosophy.
I finally have high speed access to the internet, so less frustration, but no more knowledge or skill. Will try to respond to your
PAT COONEY Nida
Last Year This has been a special year, with the loss of Didie Kenna being the focus of the year. She left with such grace and
peace it was an inspiration and great comfort to me. My kids have found themselves: Dean in the Army studying Korean, and
Katy about to graduate from the Art Institute of Portland in Interior Design. My mom continues to be well—even on the days
she’s got Asthma—because she REFUSES to allow the idea that age counts! So, I’m working on following her lead and staying
17 forever. My firm, Patty Kay’s Tea Garden Teas is flourishing, and Lipton just rented my tea garden to shoot their latest TV
commercial for white tea. Look for the commercial w/ the tea leaves falling through water—they are mine! My tea garden
consists of two potted real plants, which Lipton flew to CA, contract and all, for the shoot. Isn’t that a riot! I’d love to visit tea
gardens of the world, where I hear they have even more plants than I do. I have been to the only one in the US, and loved it. If
any of you have stories of tea gardens or tea memories, please send them to me. It’s fun to run into classmates…last day of
summer of 2006, I was swimming in the city lake pool and met up w/ Paul Niles and his family, and several of the girls had a
lovely tea party at Mary’s Woods about a month ago when Kay Koenig was in town. We all look, of course, just the same!!!
There’s talk of a monthly birthday lunch so let me know if you want to meet w/ our school friends…just like at school…meet you
on the lawn outside the main office. . Fun to be in touch! Watch for me, I’m the lady w/ the tea basket running into tea tasting all
over town. Pat Cooney Nida
BOB COX
Last Year Linda and I have been extra busy this past year, as everyone has been I am sure, but between the new baby and
three or four business ventures we just stayed focused on things close to home. That being said, I will now explain the baby.
The year has been a blessing in many ways as we opened our second Joe Bean's. I case I have never explained, Joe Bean's is
an espresso drive thru business that is the reason Linda and met. So life is interesting with two drive thrus, Linda's Chiropractic,
my espresso equipment sales on the east coast, and an online travel agency. We love it all and continue to look for the other
possible sites for two or three more Joe Bean's. As in the old adage it is Location, Location and Location that is still critical. On
a different note, things continue to progress with Caryn [Bob’s daughter with Julia Arnold], and we have stayed in touch since
the first communication; just last week Caryn proposed a face to face meeting. We plan to meet in Austin in July or August.
Meet Spouse/Partner I have been in the coffee business most of my working career and about seven years ago Linda and I
met when she decided to open a coffee shop. She knew the restaurant business from 15 years of restaurant management prior
to becoming a Chiropractor, but did not know coffee. That is where I entered the picture selling her the building, equipment and
consulting as she got the business going. Two years into the business relationship and a strong friendship we went on a date at
a coffee show in Las Vegas and here I am in Lynchburg, VA. Linda's story is that I became too expensive to hire so she just
married me so she wouldn't have to pay the big bucks.
Earliest Memory Life in the Flathead Lake area of Montana, where I was born and spent my early years and it was my
Grandmother's cooking.
Addresses Addresses since HS number past twenty from at least 7 military, and 16 between career moves and the last one
that brought me to VA and Linda.
Changing Political Views Politically I am even more Republican than ever as an overall view, what a shock for a business
owner to feel than way.
Before I Die Skydive and tour Greece and Italy. Linda wants to go on the tour but not jump out of a perfectly good airplane.
Time Capsule As for the time capsule my first laptop or mobile (brick) phone, a real ear of corn if there was one to be found
before the new and improved corn of today and a Time or Newsweek magazine.
~That's it for now but I will try to remember to e-mail about Caryn and send new photos. Bob
WAYNE CROSS [Excerpt from an e-mail]
Things are fine. Contemplating retiring, but haven't figured out when or where (we're building a horse farm in S. Carolina, but I'm
missed the last reunion and will definitely make next year’s.
I'm just back home from a ten day stay at St. Vincent's Hospital. Jaime and I managed to sneak off to Kona before I got sick. We
DIANE DEHNER Reynolds
Last Year The last twelve months have been relatively quiet. No big trips…mostly family things and visits to out-of-state friends.
I’m still the restaurant critic for Salem’s Statesman-Journal and feel like the mid-Willamette Valley is going to run out of decent
places to review one of these days. We’re spending a lot of time planning a return trip to Australia in December and are looking
forward to our first visit to Tasmania. We just became part-owners of a beachfront condo South of Newport----with all the
hassles of international traveling these days, we’re looking forward to getting to know the Oregon Coast better.
Meet Spouse/Partner In July 1976 I took a “mental health day” with a fellow I was dating and went to Santa Cruz. That
evening we went out for a drink at the Catalyst, a long-time Santa Cruz nightspot. My date introduced me to his agency’s
consulting psychiatrist who was in Santa Cruz for a counselor-training session. The psychiatrist and I drank a lot of beer and
had a great conversation. Several months later at a mental health lecture in San Mateo County, my future husband said he saw
me walking up the stairs and liked the view. He figured the best way to get someone’s attention was to stare at them, which he
proceeded to do during the lecture. Later he told me that he was trying to come up with some snazzy pick-up line and timed his
exit to run into to me at the doorway. Before he could verbalize whatever line he rehearsed, I said “Haven’t we met somewhere
before?” (He had no clue!) We had lunch the next week and have been together ever since.
Earliest Memory On Christmas Day in 1948, driving with my father to pick up my mother and my newborn sister at the hospital
in Knoxville, Tennessee. I would have been three. (Of course I also remember when I was two and a half being horrified as I
watched my father back up the car and accidentally run over my kitten; my mother swore it never happened---probably trying to
protect me from the traumatic memory.)
Addresses Not counting all the “General Delivery” post offices during my year traveling in Europe, there were twelve actual
abodes.
Changing Political Views Coming from a family where politics were never discussed, I didn’t even know which party my
parents voted. My ex-husband said they were clearly Republican which may explain why they were aghast the day I registered
as a Democrat. I have never crossed party lines and am probably as liberal as they come.
Before I Die Eat at some Michelin-starred restaurants in France and (finally) see the Pyramids.
Time Capsule More than three: Complete sets of Charles Dickens & Kurt Vonnegut; an heirloom seed catalog; my
grandmother’s handwritten recipe book; a selection of blues and classical music ---- and a copy of “Louie, Louie.”
JANICE DUKE Pindell & DEAN PINDELL
Janice starts our update, and Dean finishes!!!
Last Year This has been a WOW year for us! Last November, Dean was told that his heart was very sick. The Cardiac Team at
OHSU strongly recommended that he be put on the transplant list. His name was added to that list on November 15th, and the
donor heart was transplanted November 22nd. From then on we've grown tremendous respect, appreciation, and gratitude
to our Amazing God, OHSU: doctors + nurses + staff, donor & family, our family, friends, churches, and the power of prayer.
There have been many blessings, some ups and downs, monitoring and adjusting (medications), and continual
balancing nutrition, sleep, and meds, goals in life, and projects to be completed. This is the continuing pattern for his life
now.....yet always eternally thankful for 'second chances'!
We continue to live in Albany, closer to OHSU and family! Another WOW blessing came into our family last
September....our granddaughter born Sept. 13th joins her 3 older brothers. Our son and wife are very busy with their family,
bakery in Corvallis, and sporting events/activities for the 2 oldest grandsons (which Dean and I cheer, shout, applaud,
encourage as often as we can!) Our daughter continues to manage a bakery in Salem, and my parents live at Mary's Woods in
Lake Oswego with many classmates’ parents + Mr. & Mrs. Bryon Meurlott, (LOJHS....7th Grade Science). We are close to all
of them which is another great blessing from the Lord.
Diane mentioned Real Estate in Lake Oswego, how it is changing which we all have seen. One example is my
parents’ house on 5th Street (downtown LO). They bought it for $4500 in 1940, and in 2003 the asking price was $500,000. It
is walking distance from stores, library, buses, restaurants, etc., plus membership in the Snug Harbor Easement,
swimming/boating on the duck pond. As John Turchi said, "It is the location that allows the price to be so high!" WOW!
Meet Spouse/Partner Janice and I met in 7th grade at good ol' LOJHS. We didn't start dating until the summer between
our sophomore and junior years at LOHS. First date was a triple date with Jim Bunch and Rae Anna Lentz and John Turchi
and a girl who wasn't from LO. We went to a movie at the Family Drive-in on Barbur Blvd.
Addresses Having spent 35 years in rural Oregon where the post office box still reigns supreme, Janice and I have gone
through several residences (7) but only two post office boxes. With our move to Albany, our number of addresses increased to
four---five if you count a couple of months of general delivery mail in Albany while we were waiting for our house to be
Before I Die I'm already doing it by living each day in a way that I hope glorifies my Lord, Jesus Christ. I'm truly blessed and
grateful that He saw fit to allow me to continue to do so by providing all the things necessary for a successful heart transplant.
Meet Spouse/Partner One Friday evening, almost 42 years ago, a friend of mine and I were sitting around bored stiff, our lady
friends were out of town, and we had nothing to do. I had the idea of lining up two dates and taking in a show. I decided to call
an old classmate by the name of Mary as my date. My sister had a college roommate whom I had never met; I called her to see
if she would like to take in a movie as a date for my friend. She reluctantly accepted. To my surprise, my sister’s friend, who
was my friend’s date, and I hit it off that evening and the rest is history.
great with no pain. What a relief! Next month I'm going on a horseback trip with a friend to Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon &
part of the Grand Canyon. Then we're meeting back in Las Vegas with our husbands to celebrate my husband's 65th birthday.
I can't believe I'll be married to a 65 year old--yikes! He'll retire in June, & then more fun will begin!
Meet Spouse/Partner Bernie & I have known each other forever. We grew up across the street from each other in Portland in
the Mt. Tabor area. We always tell people that my Mom knew him longer than she knew me (since he's a few years older)! His
sister & I were best friends, & his Dad was our family Doctor.
Addresses After we married we lived in an apartment for 2 years, then in Lake Grove for seven years, & finally moved to our
dream house in L.O. & have been here more than 30 years. We are in the Stafford triangle & are now fighting for our Measure
37 rights. Never a dull moment!
~ Hope all is well with everyone, & thank you, Diane, for all the work you're doing! Judy Dwyer Albers
IAN ELLIOT
Last Year For the Elliots this has been a busy year. As reported last year our daughter Marion was married in Puerto Rico and
now is pregnant. We are to be grandparents for the first time. Everyone is doing well. I have been assisting in a remodel of
their home in Seattle and remain busy. Sandy and I and some friends spent six weeks in trailers in Baja on the beach. Had a
great time and did nada. It seemed this winter would never end. Daughter Crystal has decided --along with her beau -- to move
to Seattle also so soon everyone will be in one place. Even Grandmother Ethel is talking about relocating to Seattle. Any way
I'll try and attach some pics. ~ Ian and Sandy Elliot
PAT EMIG Kestner
Last week I re-visited my grade school in the town formerly known as Lake Grove via Naomi's Lampshades, which—miracle—is
still there. As am I, still here, that is…. We're traveling, so I don't email a lot. Pat Emig
LES FAHEY
Last Year During the past year I have been fairly busy. I failed semi-retirement and ended up as CEO for one of the companies
that I was advising. Recently we hired a permanent CEO so I will be back to my desired pace soon and should be able to
resume a more active fishing schedule. We added two more grandsons this year to the Fahey clan, and I’ve also become even
more involved at church.
LAKER PLANET 4 TH EDITION SUMMER 2007
Meet Spouse/Partner I met Nancy on a blind date, and it was love at first sight for me. We have been married for 36 years and
have 2 sons and 5 grandchildren.
Earliest Memory I remember moving to our home in Lake Grove when I was about 3 years old.
Before I Die I have had a very good life and I do not have any burning earthly desires. I mostly want to continue to grow
spiritually and be counted as a follower of Christ when I die. ~ Les Fahey
JOAN FEASLEY Hintz
Last Year Our news of the year is that Gary retired, and we're going to be grandparents in September! He will enjoy retirement
because it'll give him more time for photography (he has had work published and won some awards!) and he also races cars
along with our 3 sons. No rocking chair for this guy! I still do some artwork, and I really look forward to a grandchild. I continue to
work with several charities in the Seattle area and spend my time in Bellevue, in Portland with our moms, or in Arizona. My mom
lives at Mary’s Woods in Lake Oswego, and Gary's mom is in the Sellwood area.
Meet Spouse/Partner I met Gary between my sophomore and junior year of college, while we were both working at summer
jobs at U.S. National Bank in downtown Portland.
Addresses I've had 11 addresses since I graduated from high school.
~ I enjoy reading about everyone in the newsletter and, when I look at the photos everyone sends in, I realize how many people
I actually remember after being at Lake Oswego High only one year.
BOB FISH
Last Year Over the last year my life has continued to be an adventure full of great times and joy-filled moments. A family
reunion in Oregon last July found us in 108 F temperatures and 75% humidity! I’m still trying to figure out who ordered that in
for us. The other main events of the year both occurred just recently. I changed employers and am now working for the U.S.
Department of Energy (I’m from the government and am here to help you) right here in Las Vegas on the same Yucca Mountain
Project that I’ve been working on for the last 16 years. The other and most exciting development in the last year was the birth of
our 8th grandchild - and it’s a boy finally!! Seven granddaughters are great, but a grandson puts the “icing on the cake.” I love
kids and being with my grandchildren is always filled with fun and games.
Meet Spouse/Partner I met my wife at a Church singles activity. Upon finding myself divorced and alone in Las Vegas in 1991,
I decided to get involved in my Church’s singles group. I met her at the first activity I attended and “the rest is history.”
Earliest Memory My earliest memory is at the age of about 3-1/2 years. My brother Mike (Mickey at the time and about 1-1/2
yrs old) and I were standing at our front room window in Marysville, CA, one winter day. We were standing between the window
and a free-standing heater. We were there long enough to start Mike’s pants on fire (he had been leaning back against the
heater). Such excitement!
Addresses Since leaving High School, I have had 2 addresses in Corvallis while attending OSU, 3 addresses in Richland,
Washington while working at Hanford for nearly 20 years, 1 address in Lynchburg, VA while working there for 3 yrs, and 5
addresses in Las Vegas while living here for 16 years. That would make a total of 11 addresses since high school.
Changing Political Views I considered myself a Democrat early on while in High School, influenced primarily by my parents
and their political views (maybe that’s why I could never seem to agree with Mr. Lieske). As I grew into my mid to late 20s, the
realities of life and my experiences converted me to the Republican side. As I grow older and find a few grey hairs showing up
on top, I think I have shifted back toward the middle with a strange combination of leaning toward the “right” on economic policy
issues and a little to the “left” on many social/humanitarian policy issues.
Before I Die I hope to be able to start spending more time helping people make the most of their lives. My wife and I operate a
transitional living facility for released offenders here in Las Vegas and hold two, mandatory program meetings each week. At
these meetings, we teach Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and an LDS version of the AA 12 Steps (with a focus on
Jesus Christ as our “higher power”). We find it very exciting and satisfying to see the changes in the lives of those who take
these “habits” and “steps” to heart and make them an integral part of their everyday lives.
Time Capsule 1) a Blackberry to symbolize the technology of our day, 2) the front page of a few newspapers displaying the
insanity we sometimes see manifested in the headlines of our day, and 3) I can’t think of another good item – maybe I’ll let
Christine Brown choose this item (she always had good ideas).
DIANNE FIXOTT Sherlock
Last Year Things have gone pretty smoothly over the last year, other than seriously ailing siblings---one of my sisters and my
husband’s brother. I have been doing lots of volunteer type things, most for our church and some for good old LOHS ‘63. Last
fall I took a cruise with my girlfriend. We flew to Boston, and then cruised up the east coast visiting Martha's Vineyard, Bar
Harbor, Portland, Halifax, and St. Johns. Beautiful views, wonderful weather, fascinating sites to see.
LAKER PLANET 4 TH EDITION SUMMER 2007
Meet Spouse/Partner Kathy Deal was my roommate for a term at U of O and through her I found out that one of Bob Rosso's
(LOHS class of '62), roommates and some other guys drove up to Portland fairly frequently . So I bummed a ride one
weekend. Rosso's roommate was my husband, John. We drove back and forth from Portland together a number of times and
ended up taking a class together, and one evening he asked me out. We dated for about a year and married in August 1967.
We celebrate 40 years in August. (We owe it all to Kathy Deal and Bob Rosso.)
Addresses 10---4 in college, and we are on our 6th since we got married.
Changed Political Views Nope.
Before I Die I’d like to say something profound like develop a cure for something, or be responsible for peace in our world—but
those are out of my scope. There are just so many things I still hope to do I can’t narrow it down. So I will just say “I have
promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep” I hope. (Thank you Robert Frost)
Time Capsule
• One of the rosaries I make to give to hospitalized parishioners
• My stack of letters from my husband when he was in the service,
• The DVD I made for the members of my family last Christmas that has family photos (with captions and music) that
cover from my great, great grandmother on my Mom's side, grandparents on both sides, parents’ wedding, growing
up, our wedding, our kids growing up, our kid’s weddings, and grandkids.
These things are based on FAITH, LOVE and FAMILY--the most important things in my life.
SHARON FRENZEL
Last Year This year had an interesting beginning for me. After a management takeover and foot surgery that gave me an
unexpected 5-week vacation, I find myself still working in property management. And now, I just received my recall papers from
American Airlines.
Earliest Memory That I entered the world along with someone else who looked just like me.
Addresses I’ve had at least 8 addresses since leaving high school. I’ve lived in Portland, Newark, NJ, New York, Los Angeles,
and 4 different places in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Changing Political Views I still view myself as a pretty conservative person but am very glad that women and minorities are
widely accepted in politics and helping to make more decisions.
Before I Die The one thing I hope to experience before I die is being a grandmother.
Time Capsule The three things I would put in a time capsule are:
1. All of my TWA memorabilia
2. Family photos (labeled) -as far back as I can find- including pets
3. Old time videos of: I Love Lucy, Perry Mason & Topper
JOHN FRISHHOLZ
Last Year I am still busy teaching a graduate program in Educational Leadership for City University, and have also been
teaching some undergraduate courses for the University of Victoria. Mia and I along with two other couples traveled to Hawaii,
Fiji and New Zealand January through February and now we are scrambling to catch up in the garden and keep up with my
teaching responsibilities. My life seems to be speeding up, and I struggle to linger longer in the moment.
Meet Spouse/Partner Mia and I met at Lewis and Clark College in 1965.
Earliest Memory Being hospitalized at Children's Hospital in San Francisco, too sick to move about on my own, watching my
parents through a glass window waving goodbye and enjoying the clowns that visited each day and helped us laugh and forget
our sadness.
Addresses Five during my University days, eight since, the last (our current address) has been the same for 33 years.
Changing Political Views Very little actually, however I think I am better read and more tolerant and open to different views -
harder on the problem but easier on the people. Generally more curious and less judgmental, but clearly left of centre.
Before I Die Actually there are five! (I’m stealing this from John Izzo's 'Five things You Need to Discover Before You Die'.)
Reflect more
Risk more
Love more
Enjoy more (be in the moment)
Return more (to your family, your friends, your community, your planet)
While this might appear to be just common sense, as Mark Twain said, "The trouble with common sense is that it is not common
practice."
MARIANN FURRER
Last Year I am in the process of training a replacement for me so that I can retire from my accounting job for Mrs. Leonore
Annenberg here in Rancho Mirage, CA by the end of June, 2007. After this great occasion, I plan on traveling, joining some
volunteer groups, taking up bridge again and playing as much golf as possible in this Paradise where I live.
~Thanks for all your hard work on keeping us up with each other. Mariann
JIM HARRIES
Last Year The past year has been one of the best for me. My youngest graduated (finally) from college, and is now working on
Japanese manuals for a high tech manufacturer. We got to visit one kid in Hawaii and another on the Island of Guernsey in the
English Channel. While there, we visited Paris, and Mallorca, Spain. One more grandkid is on the way, so I suppose we’ll need
to go back. Consulting work has picked up; I’m now working on wind farms, mostly in the Columbia Gorge. The developers are
making electricity, but don’t seem to know much about their product. Sherrie has a few interior design jobs that allow her to
share her talents. We both feel pretty good, and enjoy life.
Meet Spouse/Partner Sherrie and I met at an interdenominational Christian singles group. She was into music and got me
back into playing. We’ve been married eight years and have five kids. (Three of hers and two of mine.) Best time of my life,
and we’re still making music.
Earliest Memory I can remember some of the Lake Grove nursery school, but then my mom ran the school. I remember being
sad when my Dad traded in the ‘37 Ford for a new ‘49. So now I have a ‘48 Lincoln.
Addresses I’m afraid I haven’t had many addresses, other than being away at college, I left my parents’ house and bought the
house I’m still in. Of course, being married to an interior designer, the house doesn’t look at all the same. Managed to get in
lots of travel though.
Changing Political Views Political views? Do we dare share? I went from anti-war liberal to thinking what I did then was silly.
Couldn’t be I’m getting old…
Before I Die I’d like to finish at least a few of the many projects I’ve started. This gives me inspiration to take care of myself so
I can live long enough. I’d like to see the grandkids progress a bit more too.
Time Capsule For the time capsule, I’d like to file a web site I’m meaning to construct of the family history. One of those
projects I need to live longer for. ~ Best to all, Jim & Sherrie
DAVID HARRIMAN FOUND!
Here's some of what I've been up to since '63. I went to Portland State as art major, was yearbook editor/designer in senior
year. Graduated in '67 and took a job as designer with a studio in Rochester, NY. Not an interesting place, but near Toronto,
Boston and New York, and home of Kodak, Xerox, French's, etc. who were major clients with lots of work. Had my own studio
from '71 to '83, when I sold the house & business & escaped to live in Portland for a year. In '84 moved to San Francisco, where
I've been ever since. I was a senior graphic artist for the state of California for 10 years, which has provided great health
benefits, and now I paint at home and sell artwork of my own choosing online. My next goal is to spend some time in France
and Italy, having always been too busy working to travel to Europe. It's strange to summarize 44 years---it has gone by quickly,
and there's much more I'd like to do. I hope this info is helpful. ~ Looking forward to the 45th next year. ~Later, David Harriman
DOUG HEWETT
Last Year I am recovering from a tonsillectomy (squamous cell cancer in right side) and seven weeks of radiation (5 days/wk)
and chemo (1 day/wk). It is very difficult to swallow. The morphine tablets reduce some of the pain in the mouth. If I take the
morphine I can't drive to work. It will probably take 4 weeks before I can eat without the drugs so I can return to work.
Meet Spouse/Partner Newspaper ad.
Earliest Memory Touching a hot iron and hearing my Mom's voice from the other room: "I told you not to touch that."
Addresses 21 addresses.
Changing Political Views More libertarian and anti-big government.
Before I Die Continue to enjoy family and friends.
Things with me are fine, I have been ‘very’ busy over the last 9 months or so with activity here at work – including quite a bit of
travel. I continue to hang-in there as I really enjoy what I do, and I’m not sure what I would do with a lot of free time on my
hands…will have deal with that one of these days…but my health is still good so I keep going.
Last Year I talked with Mike Bray last weekend. We attended our shared 40 th college reunion in Walla Walla. He is his same
affable, generous, and accomplished self.
Earliest Memory My earliest memory is of the Vanport Flood (May, 1948). We lived out by the airport at that time, and Dad and
I drove out to have a look. I would have been three years and a few weeks.
Before I Die Enough talk about dying. ~ Best regards, Dave
snow and no pine beetles, so the trees are thriving and everything is green ( comparatively, since when we come to Western
Oregon or visit Rusty's family in South Texas we REALLY get a shot of green!!!) and growing nicely. And we'll have enough
water this year to grow a great vegetable and annual flower garden. I retired (about the fourth time) in October and so far it has
really stuck this time. Am enjoying gardening, studying the genealogy of my family (and a little about Rusty's family as well). I'm
back to studying piano and Spanish and soon I hope to start two volunteer projects. One is with a local organization named
Bienvenidos. It is a non-profit that collects and distributes all varieties of "stuff" from clothing and household goods to food
boxes. The woman who owns and runs it is a wonderful spirit and I can't wait to help her. Secondly, soon I will start helping a
woman who raises and trains horses for elderly and disabled people. [Daughter] Shannon passed her 1 year anniversary of her
kidney transplant with flying colors. She is doing so well the doctors are weaning her off of her Prednisone which is unheard of.
We thought she would be on it for the rest of her life. Rusty and I are coming up on our 10th anniversary and are planning a
special trip….details (and hopefully pictures) next year. I finished a 6 month weight reduction program in October and lost 25
pounds that needed to go for a long time. Feel great!!! I guess the year has gone really well!!!!
Meet Spouse/Partner We met in Mendocino CA in December of 1989 at a personal growth seminar.
Earliest Memory Having a bath in the kitchen sink at my grandmother’s house in Portland when I was not quite 2 years.
Addresses This is the 12th address since High School.
Changing Political Views I have always been and remain mostly apolitical.
Before I Die Stay happily married to the same man and continue to be an example of what a GREAT relationship can be to
everyone we meet.
Time Capsule A. A dolphin B. My I-Pod Shuffle C. Several roses (which I would expect would stay as beautiful
and fragrant as the instant I put them there).
~ And thanks again to George and Barbara Robinson for remembering to call and for visiting us---and to all of you there in '63-
Central for all the work and dedication to keep us informed and "together”!!!!! Love to all, Linda
CONNIE LANGOE Kiener [Excerpt from an e-mail]
I'm so busy living in the moment that the questions do not seem pertinent at this time. My sincere apologies. ~ Connie
BILL LESH
Last Year A mixed year, as usual. I had to help find a senior center for my Mom who suffers from dementia. That, as many of
you probably know, is a very tough problem to deal with. Fun taking my son to LOHS for his first year although the new building
is a little overwhelming.
Meet Spouse/Partner No partner (or spouse)
Earliest Memory I remember playing in the street at my home in Portland and taking my electric train to kindergarten (which
was then destroyed by all the other kids).
Addresses 10, I think.
Changing Political Views I have become more conservative. I am especially concerned about those who want government to
be the answer to everything. I look at our history and see the great things done by so many individuals. I see it in my volunteer
life every day. Currently work with Loaves and Fishes and see how thousands of volunteers deliver and prepare meals for
seniors throughout the metro area. We serve more every year and do it with increasing volunteerism and contributions - in the
face of reduced government support to deal with senior hunger. The challenge is growing every year but the Board continues to
seek innovative solutions to help solve a growing problem. I hope everyone in our class is giving back to our wonderful
community. Okay, I'll get off my soap box now.
Before I Die I haven't ever thought about it.
Time Capsule A Kingston Trio album, a Bill Cosby video and a bottle of Oregon Pinot. Music, humor and a great drink to
celebrate opening the capsule.
JIM LISBAKKEN [Note with pictures he sent]
[Photos] with my kids, Ben and Kelly. Ben is a senior at USC, and Kelly is now an investment banker in SF doing biotech.
MIKE LIVERMORE [Excerpt from an e-mail]
conversation Mike mentioned that he trains quarter horses.] Everything is just really good.
DICK LUDDERS
Last Year Pretty much the same. Still working full-time. High point was the marriage of our daughter, Jessica, July 7 in the
Seattle area. I find I am thinking more and more about “retiring” in the sense of doing something different. It amazes me how
many of the class of ’63 are already retired!
Meet Spouse/Partner She was a bridesmaid and I an usher in Bryn Pederson’s wedding in San Diego. Spent the three days of
the wedding together then she went into the Canadian version of the Peace Corps (CUSO), and I traveled around the world and
went to work for an airline in Viet Nam. Didn’t see each other for another 2 ½ years but kept writing. Finally reunited at
Thanksgiving 1970 during a week’s R&R from Viet Nam. Proposed to her a month later by letter from Viet Nam. Took a couple
months, but got re-posted to Los Angeles where she joined me from Montreal. Got married in May, 1971. Always amazes me
to tell the story!
Earliest Memory Playing around the barn at our small farm in Lake Grove, now buried under a residential subdivision!
Addresses Pretty much a gypsy until Ann and I settled down. Since getting together in LA in 1971, we’ve only lived in 5
different places. We’ve lived in Weare, NH at the same address since 1979.
Changing Political Views I was raised a Republican and now vote as an Independent or Democratic. I’m not sure if I’ve
become more liberal or the Republican Party veered away from me and became more rightist and special-interest oriented.
Before I Die Travel around this beautiful country with Ann in a VW camper van.
Time Capsule Pictures of our family and the story of our meeting; pictures of our 1830 house as we have known it during our
“custodianship”; narratives of my childhood in Lake Grove and LO – they were happy times!
SANDY MACKIE
Last Year Well --Busier than ever in the land regulation business--people keep coming and nobody knows where to put them--
particularly our children--so the quest for Lake Woebegon continues. On the brighter side the boys are doing well with Alec and
his partner headed to China for a wedding in the fall; my youngest David returning to Surflight theater in New Jersey for the
summer (classic Jersey Shore summer stock) to be lighting director again for the second year--this year we are likely to lose
him to the bright lights and big City of New York as he really enjoys his work in Theater design, sound and lighting; and Cindy
and I just purchased a small property in Winthrop, Washington as we look forward to spending more time in the Methow Valley.
Meet Spouse/Partner Cindy and I met at Pitzer College the first year it opened (1969) when the Pitzies shared the dining hall
with us at Claremont Men's College.
Earliest Memory Winter /Spring 1949 Veterans’ housing Washington State University--complete with an icebox. My New
Stepfather returned to WSU to complete his degree--his graduate project for his mechanical engineering degree was a rebuild
Last Year It's been a very enlightening year. At my age I don't need another one like it....but on the brighter side it's always
good to put on my big girl pants and deal with it...and keep laughing.
Meet Spouse/Partner I met my husband through a friend. I had made a macramé lamp for a friend who was going through a
tough time…he saw it and wanted to meet me and asked if I would make three for him to give as gifts...
Earliest Memory I was about four or younger and my sister and I would sneak out of bed at night and eat soft white bread
sprinkled with sugar. I can still remember the graininess of it...ugh how could I have done that...ugh, ugh, ugh… :)
Changing Political Views My views haven't changed, but the continual bickering between the two governing parties seems
to be more important than finding a solution. It's frightening to me that it all ends up about greed and power. We certainly grew
I spoke with Mary-Ann by phone in mid-May. She retired from her customer service position at Nordstrom’s a while back and is
mulling how to get involved in interesting and worthwhile activities. Her love for animals might initially be put to use as a
volunteer dog-walker for the Humane Society. She is also keeping busy with gardening and sounded as if she has quite a bit of
upkeep with which to deal. On the grandparent front, she was pleased that her daughter is expecting a baby in December.
Last Year Life has been very good to us this last year; we enjoyed our children and grandchildren during the summer months.
John our son (living in Taiwan with his wife Margaret and daughter Kaylee, 10 years old) arrived in the states at the end of June;
toured southern California Disneyland, Universal Studios etc.; had a great time and then traveled to the ranch in Idaho. Our
daughter Simone and family from Florida arrived the same day with her husband Michael and three children--Emma 10, Sam 8,
and Max 6. We did have a full house. All the children rode horses, fished, made great campfires and just became very good
ranch hands by the time they went home. It was a wonderful summer. Terry and I recuperated that fall and headed for AZ for
the winter months. We are back at the ranch this spring changing water, fixing fences and getting ready for the cattle to come
on the 15 th of May. We are both healthy this year we need to get rid of a few of the lbs. we put on during the winter months but
with the shortage of farm labor don’t think we will have much trouble getting that taken care of.
Meet Spouse/Partner Terry was home from the service and I was spending my spring vacation in Idaho with my grandparents.
We met on a double date and changed partners for the next date and have never changed again; we were married as soon as I
graduated from high school. That looks like 44 years this June.
Earliest Memory Seeing my father for the first time I was about 3 years old. I remember his uniform, and he seemed so very
tall. We moved from my grandparents to the Green Apartments in Boise Idaho. My grandmother owned the apartments, and we
were to be the managers; I was in heaven and always thought that the apartment building was the biggest building in Boise.
This was not true going back after many years. Funny what a child sees.
Changing Political Views I am ashamed to say that my views in the past have been complaisant. I did not take the time to
listen and try to understand our political system. With the mess we are in I am beginning to listen up. Pure disgust and rage
with our political system. Yes we voted for them but feel they have let the people of America down. I so want to respect our
leaders---however with the lies that led us to war, the President of the United States ignoring the Constitution and the biggest
deficit in the history of the country I cannot see that we have many leaders in place. Hope with the upcoming elections we will
see some leaders emerge that will listen to the priorities of the American People.
Before I Die I have seen my children go to college, marry, have children and establish their lives. I would like to see my
grandchildren establish their lives.
Time Capsule I cannot answer the last question. I see a time capsule as putting something aside to view or enjoy at a later
date. I enjoy the moment and thank God each day for that opportunity. Life is the biggest adventure I can think of.
him for myself. We got married Aug 29, 2006 in Maui.
Last Year The past year has been terrific with lots of travel and the addition of a new grandbaby. Life is good!!!
Earliest Memory My earliest childhood memory is of living on a farm in Washington state---Colville to be exact. I remember
Addresses Well-let me count...I lived in Portland teaching, then Bob and I got married and lived on the medical "Hill," then
I am retiring come June 1st. Time is short and I would like to give back a bit rather than sitting at a desk..... :) Volunteer work
am not working. I am on the Tigard Dog Park Committee now, but would also like to work with the Cat Adoption Team in
“JOHNNY”/LUAT NGUYEN FOUND!
via Diane Dehner [ Note: this update was originally circulated as an addendum in April 2007.]
As many of you know, we've been on a mission to locate our last few missing classmates. Lynn Newell and her erstwhile ex-FBI
investigator supplied a possible address for our Vietnamese exchange student whom we all knew as "Johnny" Luat. In response
to a letter I mailed last week, I was thrilled to pick up the phone Tuesday night and hear a voice say "Diane, are you sitting
down....it's been 44 years..." Here's where his life has taken him:
After graduation, he returned to Vietnam after making a one-month journey across the US with other exchange
students. He said that they met President Kennedy in the Rose Garden.
He moved back to the US in 1964 and started attending the University of Oregon. He made contact with Judi Novak
and saw his AFS "brother" Van Swarthout once in Portland. He moved to Monterey and taught at Fort Ord, then moved to San
Diego where he has lived ever since. He attended San Diego State and obtained both a Bachelors and a Masters in Economics.
He married a woman from Vietnam and has two grown boys. His 37 y.o. works for Capital One and is getting married this July in
Virginia. His second son attended Brown University.
Instead of "Johnny," he now goes by his real first name of Luat (last name is Nguyen). He works with the State of
California Rehabilitation Department in San Diego. I cannot tell you how pleased I was to hear from him. In my letter I had
mentioned the class website so he was aware that Van had died. He said he was also sad to hear that Ty Hageman had passed
away and asked about several other classmates whom he remembered fondly. He was up in Portland recently and visited Lake
Oswego to see where he lived with Van and the new high school. He said that he really had not been in touch otherwise since
1963. I am hopeful that we can twist his arm to attend the 45-year reunion in 2008. It would be wonderful to see him back with
his classmates.
Last Year Well here goes another year. I am celebrating my 20 th year running my bed and breakfast in Sequim, WA. Most
people don’t make it past 5 years, must me something wrong with me!! Some of you ought to take a trip to Sequim and stay
with me. Discounts would apply. I will probably put the inn on the market next summer after my daughter gets married. My
daughter, Barbara Pitts, lives in NY, NY and continues with her acting career. Once in a while you can catch her on a Law and
Order show but mostly she does stage. She was one of the writers and actors in the Laramie Project (the story on Matthew
Shepard) which received a nomination for best screenplay. My son is the only one so far that has provided me with a grandson
who is now 7 years old. Todd is a technical writer for a company in Colorado Springs; he is the manager of a group of writers
both there and in Houston, TX. He is married to Gaby who has another son Aaron who will be graduating from HS this year.
Besides for my bed and breakfast I also manage 40+ vacation homes in the Sequim-Dungeness area, and I am a
Realtor with John L. Scott. Please do look me up at www.sequimvalley.com. I am happily single. Gary and I divorced in 1975,
and I never remarried. I have a big social life, and I love to travel. Besides running here and there to catch Barb in a play, I also
26

LAKER PLANET 4 TH EDITION SUMMER 2007
go to Colorado to see my son and grandson and my sister Barbara who lives there also. This past February I went to
Guatemala for two weeks and had a wonderful time. Saw quite a bit of the country and got to Honduras also and visited a
wonderful bird sanctuary for the endangered birds of Honduras; we also visited the ruins at Copan, fabulous and fascinating. I
brought so many weavings and things back that I had to leave some of my personal things behind so I wouldn’t go over weight
on my luggage. I’m looking forward to more travel especially after I get rid of the B&B.
I spend a fair amount of time gardening at my inn. I created a monster which needs constant tending. I am also
investing as I can in other rentals in my area. Sequim consistently gets in the top 10 places to retire and as we know the baby
boomers are fast approaching retirement. If you didn’t already know, Sequim gets an unusually low amount of rain somewhere
between 14 and 16 inches per year but most importantly we have the “blue hole” phenomena so when it is cloudy all over
Western Washington we often have sunshine. Speaking about retirement I don’t see that happening real soon for me. I will
probably continue with real estate after I sell my inn, I like it and it keeps me busy. My kids would like me to live closer to them
but I don’t see myself leaving this area. I would rather fly to see them periodically and have them come and visit.
~ Thank you for keeping us posted on each other. I like hearing what’s up with everyone. SIMONE NICHOLS
Hello everybody, I’m feeling much better, and I’m quite hopeful about the promise of the future. I was able to return to work
after I got over the broken wrist and ankle of the winter. Then, I retired at the end of April, so I’m getting ready for some lifestyle
changes to do the things I’ve been looking forward to, such as some travel and attending jazz festivals. The cancer is receding
rapidly, and my doc is very hopeful that I will be here for many more reunions! Thanks for all the cards and letters and visits---it
really lifts my spirits to know people are concerned for me. I’m a little foggy on some of the days when I was so ill, so please feel
free to call or contact me again as I’m afraid I may have missed responding to you. See you soon and thanks again for all the
support. ~Judi
PAUL OCHS
Last Year It's been kind of a tough year. I've had three back surgeries since last August. Seems like I have just getting over one
surgery or getting ready for the next. Getting old is hell. I have degenerating disks. Just falling apart. I'm back up walking and
getting around pretty well again. Won't be long and should be back to "normal."
Earliest Memory Having been born and raised in Lake Oswego, most of my early memories are of Oswego. I remember the
wooden sidewalks and the feed store where Wizers is now. For a nickel you could ride the winged horse at the Flying A gas
station or the 5-cent cokes at Ted Gilbert Motors. I remember the sign that said “Entering Oswego, Population 2500.” It really
was small town. My most vivid memory though is the first Diesel train I saw. Ran for blocks to see it when we heard the whistle
blow. My kids don't believe me.
Addresses Haven't moved around much. Like I said I was born and raised in Oswego. From there made the long move to Lake
Grove, back to LO, back to Lake Grove until 1991. Then the big decision to go all the way to Tualatin. Stayed there for three
years then off to Tigard. Summerfield area. It's a 55+ community and we love it. I quit work in 2004 and have become active in
many of the clubs and committees here. We old people really can have fun.
Changing Political Views Politics have not changed much. I'm still waiting for the second coming of Ronald Reagan.
Before I Die I was lucky and was able to some traveling. Have been to Europe, Morocco, Mexico, Canada and have been in
over 40 states but the one place I want to see is Apalachicola, Florida. No reason it just has a great name.
.~With that I better sign off. Probably said more than I should. Paul
JOHN OSCARSON
Last Year There have been no significant changes for me or for my wife, Gabriele, in the last year. Our passion for horses
continues to consume the bulk of our spare time. The last time I counted, we have 6 horses between us, and we try to find time
for all of them. Trail riding, endurance racing, dressage and jumping...it all sounds good.
Meet Spouse/Partner My wife and I met when we were both attending Portland State College (University now). Though we
had known each other for a couple of years and had mutual friends, we had never dated. Then, we met at a dinner party one
evening at school and, coincidentally, both of us had just broken up with our friends. We started talking, and the sparks flew. I
am pleased to say that after 38 years the sparks are still flying.
Before I Die Well, I think I will have to list 2 things I want to do before I die.
1. I remember about 15 years ago I had a desire to jump my horse over a fence that was 4 feet high. The lady that I took
jumping lessons from told my wife that she had to drink 4 cups of coffee before I would take my jumping lesson on Saturday
because I was so crazy. This particular morning she must have had 5 cups because I talked her into raising the bar to 4 feet. My
horse was always kind of a point-and-shoot variety. I would point and he would shoot over. This day was no different. Over he
27

LAKER PLANET 4 TH EDITION SUMMER 2007
went. About a year ago my new horse, Charmer's Slew, was given a similar challenge, only now the bar had risen to 4 1/2 feet.
He also "rose to the occasion." My goal, before I die, is to jump my horse over 5 feet. I don't think this is too much to ask. After
all, it is only 6 more inches.
2. My wife and I love to do endurance racing. We have done a number of 25 and 30 mile races. Before I die, I want to do a
hundred miler. Tevis would be the penultimate!
ELAINE OTNESS Carpenter
Last Year Life has been good over the past year. Only had one hitch which was that my husband had back surgery and was
recuperating nicely when he ended up in the emergency room with a ruptured appendix. Out came the appendix and then a
week later they had to operate again for an abscess in his intestine. All has gone well after that and he is now able to do things
that he could not for a couple of years. I still think they should have put zippers in just in case something else happens. I
decided to do a part-time job at H&R block doing their rapid refund transfers for e-filing. It was a thoroughly enjoyable
experience and I may do it again next year. Only work 4 months and part-time.
Meet Spouse/Partner I met my spouse at a going-away party for a friend at work. My friends at work knew my spouse but I
had never met him. We ended up dating and have been married for 31 years.
Addresses I count at least 15 addresses since leaving high school. Could be a couple more…
Last Year I finally own my manufactured home! After 2 ½ years of struggles with not being able to work, lots of paperwork, court
appearances, and attorney appointments, I am now “disabled” and my SSDI was finally approved in November 2006! Yes, I am
using that as an accomplishment, not because I’m glad I’m disabled, but because finally after over 40 years of me working to
pay them my salary for taxes, the government is paying me because I can’t work! Yea, yea! Therefore, I am semi-retired only
working P/T—15 hours a week, and I’m loving it!
Meet Spouse/Partner Both of my spouses have passed on. My marital status is single! So, guys of the Class of ’63 who are
still unattached (which I think by now are few and far between) give it a shot! Here I am! See you at the 45 th . And for those of
you “old married folk” who have single family or friends bring them with you, and they’ll have an opportunity of a lifetime when
they meet me!
Earliest Memory One from grade school days is worth mentioning. In the early 50s kids who were really close, best friends or
wanted to be sisters (or brothers) but weren’t from the same family could become that by pricking their fingers with a needle just
enough to produce a small amount of blood, rub their fingers together and voilà they were! Simple, painless---no mess and easy
clean-up. Wrong!
Linda Kurtz and I, at about 10 or 11 years old, decided we were going to be “blood sisters.” Len (her dad) was at work
and Grace (her mother) was out shopping. After about 15 minutes of getting up the nerve and arguing about who was going to
prick their finger first, we finally settled that both of us would do it at the same time…we cautiously went to Grace’s sewing room
(where we were never allowed) and took the sewing kit to the family room. We proceeded to quickly gather cotton balls,
hydrogen peroxide, and matches (for sterilizing the needles). Ready, set, go. With our needles in hand on the count of 3 we
poked, the blood dripped out, and we rubbed our fingers together—success—we were now officially “blood sisters.” But I could
not stop my finger from bleeding! Linda had given me a needle twice the size of hers, and the blood was dripping profusely on
the rug! By squeezing my finger it finally stopped. We were not only scared of the mess we were making but the fear of her
parents returning before we could cover up the evidence.
After many attempts to clean the blood off the rug, we were getting nowhere----we put the sewing kit back and sprayed
room deodorizer to kill the sulfur smell of matches and then sat on the stain on the carpet trying to think of a plan how we were
going to get out of this one when in walked Grace! Boy did we get in a lot of trouble…end of story…so… my “blood sister,” I
hope to see you and Rusty at our 45 th !
Addresses 45! (well it seems like that many.)
Last Year Wonderful, because I finally have two grandchildren. My son's was born last June 11, and my daughter's was born
January 20, 2007. What fun...I never imagined. I think you have seen them if you looked on the website.
Meet Spouse/Partner I transferred from the University of Oregon, to the University of Arizona, midway through my Sophomore
year. When I returned to the U of A in the Fall, Bill Brown was my first date. He was a blind date, and I heard from someone
that he was "an animal." I said "No thanks, I don't need a date." I tried like crazy to break the date, until my roommate's
boyfriend (who had fixed us up) called and said that 'he wasn't sure he wanted ME to go out with his buddy anyway,' because I
was trying to break the date. It turned out that it was another Bill Brown who was "the animal." "This Bill Brown" and I had a
great time and 40 years later we are still having a pretty good time.
Earliest Memory My Grandma Patrick (who emigrated from Inverness, Scotland) used to have picnics on the 4 th of July on her
property which is across from the Dam on Lake Oswego. She would invite her Scottish friends from Portland, and they would
build a platform, bring their bagpipes and "haggis" and they would do all the traditional Scottish Dances. They used to wear
their kilts, and I remember that wonderful sound of the pipes. The huge Douglas fir trees that were on her property are still there
although the property now has been divided. My Father still lives on his half of the land, but when I see those Douglas firs, I
think to myself...those trees have seen me since I was about 2. My earliest memories were of those Scottish Picnics and those
grand Douglas fir trees. How lucky we were to have had all that.
Addresses I have had about 40 or 50 addresses all together, because I have had over 30 just in the last 40 years.
Changing Political Views I don't think they have at all. I was a Marine Corps Pilot's wife when my husband proudly served his
country in Viet Nam. We have traveled and lived overseas for about 15 years, and I feel that many people in this country don't
have any idea how good we have it. We strongly believe that if we don't stand up for what we have, we won't have it very much
longer. I could say a lot more about this.
Before I Die Swim with the dolphins.
Time Capsule I would put an original Telephone (one of the Hollywood looking types, that they copy now), an old radio that
was housed in a big wooden box and was like a piece of furniture, and an original Television set that also came in a huge
wooden box and had a little tiny screen. Look how "communication" has changed in our lifetime.
ALAN PETERS
Last Year The last year has been one of re-building my diet and exercise program. I am real proud of the changes I have made
and really don’t miss all of the sweets I used to inhale.
Meet Spouse/Partner I met Vicky when I used to take my girlfriend (at the time) to a neat restaurant, where Vicky was our
waitress. I can’t figure out why Vicky doesn’t like to go out to eat that often.
Earliest Memory How much fun it was in kindergarten. I think that is were I first noticed some kids wore skirts.
Addresses Only 8 beginning with Corvallis, Bend, Sellwood, Lake Grove, North Carolina, (service) Sherwood, Bald Peak and
Wilsonville. I didn’t notice how little I have moved until you asked the question.
Changing Political Views Not one bit. I am still very conservative and proud of it! I still have my Nixon belt, but then we all
make little mistakes.
Before I Die Travel to Hong Kong and do some serious white water rafting.
Time Capsule Footage from 9/11 so no one will ever forget that date. Me, if you would take me, and that wouldn’t leave room
for anything else.
JULIE PETERSON DuPuis
Last Year The best thing about the past year for me has been that I've managed to stay healthy. Because of that I've been able
to have an enjoyable life! I've always thought that as we approach our twilight years, our friends are pretty well established and
we don't make many new ones. This isn't the case for Dan and me. We just seem to keep making new acquaintances whose
company we enjoy. The problem is finding enough time! I've traveled quite a bit since last June: A 6-week R.V. trip through
British Columbia, The Yukon, and Alaska; 2 R.V. trips with class of ‘62 members, Dan and Betsy (Levy) Patterson, to central
Oregon/Mt. Lassen, CA and to the coastal redwoods in northern CA; several trips to CO to see our son/wife and four of our
grandkids; 3 weeks in Kona, HI in January and most recently, a 2-week sojourn to Denmark and Budapest. There were lots of
2 and 3 day R.V. jaunts in between, also! We plan to stay close to home most of this summer so we can grow a vegetable
garden once again.
LAKER PLANET 4 TH EDITION SUMMER 2007
Meet Spouse/Partner Dan and I met at Jacobsen's Texaco gas station which was located at State St. and B or C. The station
might still be there (I know it was for a long, long time). It's no longer a Texaco, though. Dan worked there, and his best friend
was the ex-boyfriend of my friend Betsy. One day Bets and I were driving around and she spotted her ex at the station. She
wanted to talk to him, so we stopped in and I met Dan. Actually, I was more intrigued with his beeee-u-tiful ‘55 Ford Crown
Victoria than I was with him! I needed to be seen in that car----and I was----for two years thereafter!! Fortunately, in time, Dan
turned out to be even more intriguing than the car ;-)
Earliest Memory My earliest childhood memories were of Eugene, OR in our little house located across the street from The U
of O's football field. When they had fireworks on July 4, I would run back to the house terrified and hide under a bed. Watching
my dad shovel sawdust into the furnace! At 4 yrs. old, putting my ear to my mom's pregnant tummy and hearing my sister
moving around inside-----she and I have had a special bond ever since.
Addresses We have lived in 2 apartments and 5 houses in the 3 Pacific coast states.
Changing Political Views My political views have changed 180 degrees. I now consider myself conservative.
Before I Die I'd like to do a lot more traveling before I die (Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti, Cook islands), but mostly I would just
like to remain lucid and independent to the end.
Time Capsule 3 things for a time capsule---maybe some Elvis items, some Beatles items and before and after photos of the
Twin Towers. ~ That's all for this year. Happy Mother's Day to all the wonderful Moms in our class. Julie
LYLA PEW Peterson
YVONNE QUICK Hoekstra [Excerpt from an e-mail]
I am no longer working in Salem. I am not working right now. Sort of semi-retired and hope to take most of the summer off then
work part time for a while. ~ Thanks, Yvonne
GINNY RADKE Warren
Yes, I am still alive and kicking. You can put me down for that!!!! And so is Nancy [Betty].
NOEL REIERSON
Noel Reierson is alive and kicking & just wild & crazy right now with lots of things going on. He has 2 new granddaughters, for a
total of 5 grandchildren. His children & grandchildren are the light of his life. He has a contracting business with his son &
nephew and couldn't be happier. ~ Wendy (Klein) Reierson, LO 1965
JIM RIDDELL
Last Year Ok, wish more was accomplished.
Meet Spouse/Partner Blind date.
Earliest Memory Taking a rubber band, wrapping it around a bobby pin and onto my hand and then sticking the bobby pin into
the light socket.
Addresses 12.
Changing Political Views Same as when I was 18 at 62.
Before I Die Go to Nova Scotia.
Time Capsule
• Elvis record
• Photo of Kandi Foster when she was in high school
• Empty bottle of VO that John Willis, Tom Rogers , and I drank
GEORGE ROBINSON
Last Year Pretty well. We visit our grandkids a lot--Christmas, summer camp, and this year three months nearby in
Tucson. The home we rented had its own grapefruit tree. Kidney function is getting marginal. but I still don't need a kidney
transplant. Two of my non-genetically-related family members have volunteered to be donors--this is heartwarming!
Meet Spouse/Partner We met playing volleyball at a church-based singles group in Davenport. Then I found her the lyrics for
"Grandfather's Clock," because her father made clocks, and we went horseback riding...
Earliest Memory I remember playing on a sidewalk, in the sunshine, while people walked by and I was only aware of them up
to the height of their knees. Later, I remember at age 3-1/2 moving out to Lake Grove, when Jeanie Carter (LOHS '60 or '61)
30

LAKER PLANET 4 TH EDITION SUMMER 2007
gave me a mechanical clown that did handstands. Favorite memories? Our Junior High School semi-formal dance. Canoeing
on Lake Oswego and up the Canal. Skiing Mt. Bachelor & Aspen. Hawaii on honeymoon.
Addresses Maybe ten or twelve. At my most mobile, I took three weeks to travel back to school one summer's end, renting
places for a week in Quebec City and Montreal and for a few days in Toronto. The most interesting places I've lived/stayed
were probably Munich for two months in Summer 1966 and the Jewish/Turkish ghetto in Vienna for a week in Summer 2005.
One of my co-workers in Munich had been a WWII German soldier who was captured on the Russian Front; another Russian
Front soldier I met over there was still very proud of his unit. He was a good soldier in the wrong war--but we know about that
now, too...
Changing Political Views My views haven't changed that much, but the Republican Party has changed so much that I left it.
What's really changed is that I started out as an Introverted Sensing Thinking Judging Presbyterian and have become (or at
least highly value) Extroverted Intuitive Feeling Perceiving Agnostic/Atheist--did you know that throughout the universe "perhaps
a hundred solar systems are forming every second"? (Sagan/Druyan) If just a fraction of them have life, God would be either
very different from what we were taught or very, very busy...
Before I Die I've pretty much tried to do things as I went along (see #1)--but it would be nice to see the Czech museum in Cedar
Rapids! One thing I'm most glad I did was climb Mt. St. Helens before it blew up.
Time Capsule Really, I don't believe in time capsules! That's because the stuff in them tends to rust or rot and you've got
nothing left. If something's really nice, put it in a museum so everybody can see it all the time, or at least protect it from the
heat/cold and damp. I suppose the art work I'd most like to have is a wonderfully fantastic rendition by Marcus Glenn of a jazz
music performance.
Other I'd like to see high school students writing more essays imagining about what their days will be like when they grow up,
putting in lots of detail. This might help develop concrete dreams that are worth striving for (and realize what's not). I'd suggest
these be ungraded and done with the counseling department. Wisdom (from Janis Willenbring Safley): (a) Don't pass trucks
going downhill; (b) [indirectly] Try doing stuff you aren't good at. Special thanks to Larry Cable for helping me with Latin
grammar (agreement) and with note-taking (the hand will write without being watched) -- and to Tony Kirchhof, for the idea of
taking a new language as a Senior.
TOM (ROGERS) RODRIGUES
Last Year Fortunately, last fall we found relief from suburbia and the ever-present neighbors by buying a getaway cabin in High
Prairie, WA, north of Lyle. Besides eye-popping vistas, there is no media, no telephone, no emails and no neighbors. Now I
relish the fundamentals of life for a few days, and it makes the rest of the week endurable, at least for now.
Meet Spouse/Partner The first and last time I was at LOHS since graduation was in January 1982 when I went to a weekend
function sponsored by a group called Quest, affiliated with the Lutheran church. It was in the school cafeteria that I met Anna.
We had our first date a week later, and we were married six months after that. We are having a party in July to mark the 25 th
year.
Addresses Since we married, we had three addresses. The first was inner city Portland, then the beautiful area of Eagle Creek
and since last summer a condo in LO. Prior to that, I had 16 addresses since graduation.
Changing Political Views My tolerance for the hubristic media and legislative leaders continues to diminish with age and
education.
JOHN RUSSELL [Excerpt from an e-mail]
Mary and I have made the island of St. John our part-time winter home for some 25 years, first with our sailboat which was
based here for 20 years, and now with a condominium unit at a resort called Gallows Point (no, I didn't name it!).
BOB SENTER
Last Year Work has been interesting and wonderful, but the winter here in Seattle sucked so bad the infamous “RV”
and “Snowbird” conversations reared their collective ugly heads. No boating for six months. UGH!! The snow and ice killed my
varnish on the boat. Grrrrrrrr!
Meet Spouse/Partner His car was dragged into my auto repair shop on a tow truck. He was easily the most difficult person I
can remember to get to know.
Earliest Memory Playing around my house in Portland, tossing a rock through a window to see what would happen. Dad came
home and spanked hell out of me.
Addresses About fifteen, including 4 boats I’ve lived aboard.
Changing Political Views Nope. I still think we need a new government. We’re reliving Vietnam all over – apparently
Americans learn very slowly, if at all.
LAKER PLANET 4 TH EDITION SUMMER 2007
Before I Die Work less, travel more; go to my grave having spent my last cent.
Time Capsule Nothing. I’m playing with all of it.
SUSAN SLEIGHT Moffet
Last Year Had its ups and downs with some health concerns. Fortunately, all has checked out OK!
Meet Spouse/Partner Frank is the older brother of a friend I met when at business school after high school. He had just
returned from being overseas in the Air Force and was working in the new field of data processing which is what I was studying
in school.
Earliest Memory Being attacked by a rooster when I got too close to a couple of hens. He jumped on my back and was
flapping his wings and pecking my head. My Dad had to knock him off me with a broom. I was very scared! Probably was
about 3 or 4 years old.
Addresses Yow, that's difficult to say. Let me count....8, I think!
Changing Political Views Yes, I think they have. I am more strongly environmentally concerned and worried about the loss of
species and their habitats which is occurring at an exceedingly rapid rate. I am also less trustful of our elected officials. I find I
am very suspicious of the person's ultimate motive for any decision made. Is that age or what?
Before I Die Wow - to pick only one is difficult. I REALLY want to go to Africa on a photographic tour to see the animals;
however, that's only one of the places I'd like to see.
Time Capsule It would depend upon who will be looking in it in the future. If it is for my family, then I'd put pictures/some voice
items/and a message for the future family. If it is for the "world" then I'd want to put things in it that would show whoever opened
it what life was like during this century and how things have changed in the past 100 years. I'd want whatever was in the
capsule to depict life as it really is, not what may be seen via TV or movies seen years later.
LARRY SMITH via Diane Dehner
After the post office returned the last letter, I reached Larry by phone at his job as a manager at Fought & Company in Tigard.
Both he and brother Gary have worked there for years. (Gary now lives in Oak Grove). He said he will be retiring next March.
He now works four days a week and returns to Prineville on Fridays. He has a son living in Redmond and a daughter in Bend.
Currently has 3 granddaughters and one grandson with another on the way. I alerted him to the class newsletter, website and
next year’s reunion.
MIKE SOLSO
Last Year When you start reaching the social security years life is good when you make another birthday. My compliments to
you both for the great communications this year! Judy and I have had a pretty good year. The mortgage business isn't as
tainted as much as the liberal press would like you to believe. Housing has slowed off its record pace of two years ago but is
still moving along. Madras is starting to grow and anybody driving north or south on Hwy 97 should be able to start noticing the
changes. We have our first roundabout with 4 sculptured grizzly bears. Momma bear is 25 feet tall. The roundabout is at the
east end of J Street at the lower SW corner of our new Yarrow subdivision. They have a clever website
www.dontmoveyet.com. At the end of July our second daughter is due with our 6th grandchild (second granddaughter).
Grandma's really excited about that! On the 30-31st of July, Adrian Dawson (English exchange brother in the class of '62) and
Shinobu will be visiting. They will be attending the 45th reunion of the Class of '62 in LO the first weekend in August. For those
who haven't seen it, their class web page is www.lohs62.com. (Not quite up to the standards that Diane, Dianne and Steve
have set for www.lakers63.com).
Meet Spouse/Partner Looking at last year's edition of the Laker Planet I noticed I mentioned how I met Judy 43 years ago at a
Portland Beaver baseball game. We celebrate 40 years of marriage on July 1st.
Earliest Memory Rather than try to remember my earliest childhood memories I think I'll relate my first day of school in Oswego
(remember in the 50's we hadn't started calling ourselves Lake Oswego). I started school at Forest Hills in the fifth grade. I was
in Mrs. Stevens 5th grade class. I think Sheri and Max Kroodsma were the first two classmates that my brother Tim and I met
because Mr. Kroodsma was our principal. Some of our fellow classmates that first year were Mark Adams, Dennis
Bacon, Steve Daufel, Janice Duke, Dick Elliott, Sharon and Shirley Frenzel, Mariann Furrer, Happy (Dirk) Hutchins, Larry Huget,
Dave (Gordon) King, Kay Koenig, Sheri, Lenny Rountree, Kent Sjolander, Nancy Sonneborn, John Turchi, and Lloyd West.
Addresses As best as I can recollect I've lived at 15 different addresses. The longest in one house would be our stint in
Eugene from 1977 to 1999.
Changing Political Views Politically I've become fed up. I'm probably more liberal today but that's comes with getting older.
I'm still grateful that I live in the greatest country in the world judging by the number of people that risk their lives and livelihood
to get into our country everyday.
LAKER PLANET 4 TH EDITION SUMMER 2007
Before I Die Attend the British Open and the Masters and play a round of golf at St. Andrews.
Time Capsule Three things that I would put in a time capsule would be: a sliderule; mortgage calculator and a cell phone. (To
think that we all thought a Dick Tracy watch was a cartoonist's imagination.) One question to ponder - Have you ever thought
what it would be like to have typed term papers on a laptop computer? ~Thanks D & D for keeping this going. Mike
PETE STEVENS
Last Year Life's been good the past year. Janet and I went camping at Yosemite last fall with sister Diane and husband,
several trips with daughters and families ATVing in dunes @ Florence, spent a week spring break with 4 daughters, husbands,
3 grandsons, sisters and mom (15 in all ) in Sayulita and PV, Mexico....had a great time. We got up snowskiing some
this winter. Enjoying a busy retirement, lots of projects at home plus work at Stevens Marine just enough to keep up to date. I'm
still waterskiing competitively, ended up ranked #1 in the nation for 2006 in my age group (60-64).
Meet Spouse/Partner Janet and I met on a blind date in 1968, been married 37 years.
Addresses We've lived in three places. A duplex in Tigard we rented from my parents when we were first married. Our first
house we had built in Tigard ($17,000!) in 1972. Our current house on the Willamette River across from Champoeg Park that
we built in 1978.
Before I Die Run 38' off! ~ Thanks, Pete
STEVE STRECKER
Last Year Lots of travel and family get-togethers: just got back from visiting my oldest daughter in Washington D.C.; and my
youngest daughter Katrina arrives tomorrow for a visit. We leave June 8th as my middle daughter Heidi prepares for her
wedding on June 16th in the beautiful mountain town of Telluride. After the wedding we plan to travel in the inter-mountain west
with stops in Aspen, Wallowa Mountains, Bend, Boise and others yet to be determined.
Last year saw trips to Peru(Cuzco, Machu Picchu); Quito, Ecuador; Amazon Basin; and Galapagos; a two-week cruise
through the Panama Canal, and a trip on the Rogue River for the family to celebrate Dad's 60th birthday. We water-skied from a
houseboat on Lake Powell and finished up the year with two months in Kona and snow skiing in Aspen and Telluride.
Amidst all that activity, after we returned from the Rockies and a great ski trip we moved my parents, ages 86 & 87,
from their home in Bend to assisted living here in Salem. This is the time when they really begin to slow down.
Sue and I committed to teach for Salem Area Youth (SAY) golf in the POWER (Promoting Outstanding Work Education
Recreation) program for Salem/ Keizer schools so have been involved there along with our normal activities of golf and
preparation for our 3-week trip to Turkey in October. We will probably be back in town about June 21 for the remainder of the
summer.
Last Friday I had an angiogram and two stents placed in a totally blocked coronary artery (yes, I am good to go---no
problems---still swim, golf, hike, ski, travel etc. LUCKY).
As a final note Paul Davisson and I and our wives took a trip on the Willamette last summer and will no doubt do more
canoe/kayak trips. Paul looks great and is remarried to a wonderful woman. ~ Best Regards, Steve Strecker
KENT STUDEBAKER
Last Year My life has gone wonderfully over the last year. I sold my business, as of June 30, 2006, to my office manager and
her husband. I lease a portion of my warehouse building to them, and I now have the rest of it, plus the parking area in back
leased to other parties. So, my wife and I are able to survive without me working, and I am enjoying that very much. I seem to
be as occupied as ever, but it is at a little slower pace, and I like that. Additionally, my wife, Kim, and I have been able to travel
several times when the mood strikes us. My house and yard are now both well-maintained, and I can move on to other things. I
have been active in my church and in bible study, along with the hunting and camping that I have done regularly over the years.
Kim and I have maintained our activities with several circles of friends we have developed over the years, and we are enjoying
them more than ever (I hope the same can be said of their feelings toward us). Kim and I continue to enjoy each other's
company, so it doesn't get much better than this!
Meet Spouse/Partner I met Kim because her mother, who had been divorced for a couple of years, lived next door to the
apartment my Dad moved into after his divorce from his second wife. At that time my sister, Kay, and I had just graduated from
college, and we were living with Dad that summer. During the summer, Kim, who was attending Arizona State University, came
to Oregon to visit her mother. We met, she dazzled me, and things progressed in fits and starts from there until we were
married 2 years later (8 months after her mother and my Dad married).
Addresses Since leaving high school, I have had 13 different addresses.
Changing Political Views I have become more politically conservative over the years---particularly in the fiscal areas, although
I have become more mellow in the social areas in the last 5 or 10 years.
LAKER PLANET 4 TH EDITION SUMMER 2007
Before I Die I would like to write the great American novel before I die. And, I would like to make a real positive difference in
the lives of someone other than my immediate family members.
GREG TOLLER
Last Year As they all seem to, the year passed way too quickly. I began 5 weeks of external radiation treatment on June the
5th, followed by the insertion of radioactive seeds in my prostate the 3rd week in August. All in all, a big pain in the....oh well.
Other than not much energy during the treatments it was fine. I was still able to spend over 48 days in the field hunting
beginning in mid September so all was, and is well.
Meet Spouse/Partner Barbara was actually employed at Keyes Fibre at the same time I was. However, we had very limited day
to day contact. After I left Keyes, and had returned to the states to work in New York City we were invited to a dinner and began
seeing each other after that.
Earliest Memory All of my early childhood memories center on my grandfather’s ranch in Southern Idaho. I recall parts of
events that must have taken place when I was 5 or so, the summer before I started first grade.
Addresses Fun question. I tried my best to recall each city and, at least, the house, building, dorm, or barracks at each stop.
I'm not certain, but am comfortable with 25. Makes me feel like the corporate gypsy I was, or a fugitive of some sort.
Changing Political Views I really did not pay much attention to politics in general for the first 15 or 20 years after school. From
that point onward I became more and more conservative in most, if not all, of my thinking.
Before I Die I have this dream trip to New Zealand that keeps getting pushed back in favor of other events.
Time Capsule Given the state of technology and our gadget-driven society, I would put a Big Chief notebook and some #2
pencils with a manual sharpener( I realize that this is a stretch as one item); a set of World Book Encyclopedias; and a rotary
dial black telephone.
PAT TURNER Wilshusen
Last Year I've felt very blessed this last year. While I've some challenges, we are well; our daughter Erin and her husband
Scott have just had their first wedding anniversary; and Amy and "her” Scott have just passed their Seventh; and we have two
healthy grandsons who live close enough for us to see each week. Bob and I traveled with another couple through Germany,
Austria, Switzerland and Prague last fall, and the two of us are anxiously awaiting a trip to Scandinavia the end of August.
Meet Spouse/Partner Janet Williams and I moved to Seattle to teach school after graduating from Oregon State. We found a
wonderful apartment on Queen Anne with a view over Lake Union. The same day we moved in, three Boeing engineers moved
in next door. One was engaged to a nursing instructor at UW, the second became engaged to her nursing roommate and I
married the third - in that order. Janet moved back to Oregon that next summer and married a college "blind date" of mine the
week before our wedding.
Earliest Memory Until we moved to L.O. in 1950, my family lived on the second floor of a large, white home in Aloha, OR. The
owners, grandparent-aged Mr. and Mrs. "B" (Buchanan) lived below us. I remember the snowball plant next to their driveway
which we used to pick to take its flowers to the cemeteries on "Decoration Day," (remember that was before "perpetual care" so
it was time spent pulling weeds and cutting down grasses), not being able to help vacuum as they were afraid I wouldn't move
the vacuum enough and it would somehow suck the threads out of their carpet and walking into their large garden and being
allowed to pick some of the raspberries.
Addresses "Stable" is the operative word for me with one marriage, one employer for Bob's whole career (Boeing) and only one
house but before that I received my mail at two dorms and a sorority at OSU, an apartment in Albany, OR where I lived while
student teaching and two apartments here in the Seattle area, so I guess my answer is "7."
Changing Political Views The average person probably gets more conservative as they age, but I find that I'm more concerned
about the welfare of others and our environment so I guess I'm getting more liberal.
Before I Die When asked this question at a sorority reunion a number of years ago I said "learn to speak French and learn to
play the piano better." I've taken French for years but it doesn't come naturally to me at all so I'm currently "on sabbatical" from
that. Maybe I should get busy on the piano in the basement!
Time Capsule If the time capsule were to capture my life in Lake Oswego, I guess I'd put in some music of the '50's, my bicycle
which took me down to Wizer's soda fountain for butterhorns and cherry cokes and to the library to read piles of books in each
summer's read-a-thon and the three years of the "Lake Views" newspaper which chronicled our time together at L.O.H.S. (which
I still have, by the way!) If the time capsule were to reflect my priorities over the years, I guess I'd have my Bible, our travel
journals and our family photo albums.
LAKER PLANET 4 TH EDITION SUMMER 2007
NANCY VAUGHN Olsen
Last Year Life has been good this past year. We have traveled, spent time with children and grandchildren, completed a big
backyard landscaping project, and improved our golf games.
Meet Spouse/Partner Norm and I met through mutual friends while both attending OSU. I was a sophomore and Norm was a
junior at the time.
Earliest Memory Learning to ride a two-wheel bike. We lived in Portland and the next door neighbor sat on the back fender
(yes, in those days we had the big fat fenders) and slid off without me knowing that I was balancing on my own.
Addresses Since high school I have had six different addresses.
Changing Political Views Political views have probably become more conservative with age.
Before I Die See the world.
Time Capsule 1. A batch of our famous family fudge 2. A photo of the entire family 3.The first birthday card Norm ever sent me.
GARY WALDELE [Excerpt from an e-mail]
Last Year It's been very busy. The most exciting thing to happen was that I retired in January of this year. (Doing nothing with a
sense of urgency) I haven't changed much in the last 40 + years (snicker, snicker, snicker). I am looking forward to the 45th
reunion, next year. That’s about it for now. At least with this email you know that I haven't vanished off the face of the earth.
LOU WALLMAN
Last Year In the last year I finally left the Portland area, and Anne and I moved to Bakersfield, CA in October, 2006. I sailed the
boat down the coast with two friends for 7.5 days to be moored in Oxnard. It is wonderful to have the weather to sail the boat to
Catalina, Santa Barbara and the Channel Islands at any time of the year.
Meet Spouse/Partner Anne and I met on the internet about 4 years ago while I was living in Newberg and she in Tigard.
Coincidentally enough, she is an RN specializing in skilled nursing, and we met about two weeks before my parents were both
hospitalized which led to their transition about eight months later. On our first real date, she got to meet my whole family,
including my ex-wife all on the same day while we attended my parents in the hospital. That was an encounter with stress levels
that I don’t care to endure again.
Changing Political Views My political views are simple: I feel that most mid to upper level politicians should be shipped to
Baghdad under the current conditions and left until they can remove their heads from their rectums.
Before I Die Last August, we sailed the boat from Portland to the San Juans for a month which was an extremely pleasant trip.
Our future plans, when Anne retires in about 2 years, are to move back onto the boat, move to the Sea of Cortez for 1 year
then sail toward New Zealand and Australia via Hawaii, many of the South Sea Islands and then possibly back up through the
Mediterranean. This really depends on health. I have been retired and on disability since May, 2004 because of my MS and the
cognitive losses that accompany it, so I had to quit working at age 60. I guess that this circumnavigation is the one is the one
thing that I would like to do before I die.
Time Capsule What are the three things that I would put in a time capsule: Angelina Jolie, Catherine Zeta-Jones and me. He-
He!!!!!! ~ My love to all and may the universe be as good to you as it has to me. Lou Wallman
BRUCE WARD
Last Year Great year topped off by 10 weeks bicycling Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam.
Meet Spouse/Partner We met on Easter Sunday of 2000 training for a 25-mile mountain trail run.
Addresses 28.
Changing Political Views I think I’m becoming an isolationist—let’s spend our country’s money on our country and its people.
Before I Die The one thing is MORE travel—see another 30 countries.
Please add me to the [“alive and kicking”] list. Can't remember what I've answered and what I haven't!! Janice (Whelchel)
Last Year We have been blessed with a good year, continued good health, wonderful friends, and family close in spirit although
thousands of miles apart. We recently returned from a trip to Japan to see our oldest son, daughter-in-law and 1 1/2 year old
grandson. It's so much fun to be a grandma! Next big trip will be to Panama to see our middle son, who moved there recently.
Meet Spouse/Partner Thought I might share the story of how I met my spouse because it involves Pat Turner Wilshusen.
When we were freshmen at OSU, Pat was supposed to go on a blind date with a fellow from the University of Portland. At the
last minute she was unable to go on the date but had no way to contact him. She asked if I would meet him and go on the date,
so he wouldn't have driven from Portland to Corvallis for nothing. I took her place on the blind date, and the rest is history. That
was 43 years ago. Leo and I have been married for 38 years.
KATHY WILLIAMS Bamford [Excerpt from an e-mail]
Last Year We have had a great spring although we feel the lumps and bumps of the transition into retirement. It's really subtle,
but real. .. a vague sense of, hmm, feeling you really should be on tap and checking things off lists. Doug still has a few projects
in the fire, but I'm happily and busily DONE. Amy and I are down in Palm Desert at my parents’ home for a few days of girl time.
She is working remotely, and I'm getting some of the routine maintenance done on the house. Home maintenance in the desert
is interesting. How the pioneers did it in the Wild West is beyond me. It's a harsh environment even if turned into a palm-lined
paradise. We happily spent almost 3 weeks here in April. The sunshine is addictive, and it's not so bad being one of the younger
kids on the block. And I used to make fun of Palm Springs! It goes to show that you don't really know until you walk in someone
else's moccasins.
JOHN WILLIS
Last Year It has been a smooth journey with only a few miles of bad road.
Meet Spouse/Partner Kathy was a friend of a friend.
Addresses 21.
Before I Die I want to attend the 75th LOHS Class of '63 Reunion with my great, great grandchildren.
LAUREL WILSON Cookman
Last Year The past year has been eventful as usual with our family. Our daughter Kim started her Masters in Elementary
School Administration so we became second parents to her three children. Scott, Jr., graduated from college with a BA in
Computer Science and retired from the USAF; he will be working for Boeing in the Seattle Area starting May 29. Lisa is talking
about getting her Doctorate of nursing. We continue to operate our B&B. I joined the ORA/OLA legislative advisory committee
and continue work on the Oregon 150.
Meet Spouse/Partner When I was 14 I moved to LO and across the street from my future husband.
Earliest Memory I was two and sitting on the steps of Stafford school with my oldest sister when a girl tried to take my white
majorette boots away; I actually met the girl again right here at Willamette Gables when she came for a tour.
Addresses We have moved seven times,
Changing Political Views My political views have remained the same over the years.
Before I Die I would like to do a world tour and offer my services to the Peace Corps.
Time Capsule I would place a letter written on acid free paper, a CD and a prayer.
MARY YODER Wright
Last Year Okay, here goes. No big changes; we constantly go to Florida to see our darling granddaughter, Noelle Neil who is
now 18 months old. This summer we will visit Savannah, Georgia with our kids. Walt and I are going to see the Everglades and
all of Florida this summer.
Addresses Wow, I guess 9 different addresses since I left high school; some in Eugene, Portland, Alaska, Australia,
Hawaii, and Medford.
Changing Political Views My political views haven't changed that much; I've always been a VERY liberal Democrat!
Before I Die I want to get to all 50 states; Walt has made it. I will get to Georgia this summer, and then only have SC, NC, Ohio,
NJ, Connecticut, Delaware, RI to go ~ that's it! Mary Yoder Wright
