Become a Large Animal Expert
With this option, you’ll get the knowledge and
experience you’ll need to be a herd technician for a
modern dairy, beef, or swine operation. You could also
work as an assistant to a large animal veterinarian.
What can I expect?
This option features hands-on, real-world training,
including plenty of visits to successful large-animal
operations, and not one but two experience-boosting
interships!
Expect to learn the basics of large animal nutrition
and health as you study: ration formulation,
calculating rations for cattle, swine, sheep, and horses,
ferrier skills, and correct techniques for vaccination,
immunization, and artificial insemination. We will
train you to recognize large animal anatomy, spot
common large animal diseases, and learn to safely care
for injuries.
Career Opportunities
The goal of this option is to supply desperately
needed and highly skilled assistants to large livestock
operations and rural large-animal veterinarians.
With training as a large animal technician you might
also sell animal care products or animal feed.
*Please note: This is not a Vet Tech program. No
small animal work will be taught and no national
accreditation is necessary.

Many vetrinarians need assistants, particularly in
remote areas where one veterinarian has to provide
service to a large area. The South Dakota Department
of Labor statistics indicate a favorable future
employment projection for large animal technicians
in general.
