STUDENT SERVICES AND FINANCIAL AID<br />

STUDENT SERVICES<br />

Student h<strong>and</strong>books/planners are available in the bookstore.<br />

Assessment Center<br />

Prior to registration, new matriculating students who have<br />

submitted an application to attend <strong>Los</strong> <strong>Angeles</strong> <strong>Harbor</strong> <strong>College</strong><br />

are required to make an appointment to take the “COMPASS-ACT”<br />

assessment test. Any returning or continuing matriculating student<br />

who has never taken an assessment test is also required to take<br />

one (unless previously waived). The Admissions <strong>and</strong> Records Office<br />

may waive this requirement for students who have an Associate<br />

Degree or higher.<br />

Students who have been assessed in English <strong>and</strong> math at another<br />

college, or who have taken English or math coursework at another<br />

college may have already met <strong>Harbor</strong>’s assessment requirements.<br />

These students can bring a copy of their assessment results,<br />

transcripts <strong>and</strong>/or grade reports to a counselor. English as a Second<br />

language assessment is also available.<br />

Assessment test calendars are available online http/studentservices/<br />

matriculation/testingcalendar.html <strong>and</strong> at multiple campus<br />

locations. You may also contact the Assessment Center at (310)<br />

233-4072. Testing cycles run from September to February <strong>and</strong><br />

from February to September. Students are not eligible to retest<br />

within the same cycle or once they have enrolled in an English or<br />

math class <strong>and</strong> earned a letter grade (or credit/no credit). For more<br />

information, come to the Assessment Center in the Student Services<br />

& Administration Building, Room 118.<br />

Students must bring a valid photo ID <strong>and</strong> <strong>Harbor</strong> <strong>College</strong> student ID<br />

number to the test sessions. Orientation <strong>and</strong> registration information<br />

will be covered at the assessment session.<br />

In addition to the English <strong>and</strong> math assessment tests, the<br />

Assessment Center offers two Math Competency Exams (one in<br />

February <strong>and</strong> one in September), <strong>and</strong> Ability-To-Benefit (ATB) Tests<br />

(for financial aid) on a year round basis.<br />

Appointments may be scheduled in any one of the following four<br />

ways: 1) at http://www.lahc.edu/sars/assessment/eSARS.asp ; 2)<br />

on the Appointment center computers in the Student Services &<br />

Administration Building; 3) by telephone at (310) 233-4072; <strong>and</strong> 4)<br />

in person at the Assessment Center.<br />

Bookstore<br />

Books <strong>and</strong> supplies are housed in the college bookstore located on<br />

the first floor of the Sea Hawk Center <strong>and</strong> is open, when classes are in<br />

session, according to the hours posted. Used books are purchased “as<br />

is” <strong>and</strong> the bookstore assumes no responsibility for their condition.<br />

Monday thru Thursday 8:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m.<br />

Friday 8:00 a.m.- 1:00 p.m.<br />

Closed Saturdays <strong>and</strong> Sundays<br />

Rush Period Schedule:<br />

Policy For Personal Checks <strong>and</strong> Credit Cards<br />

Personal Imprinted Checks are accepted for the amount of purchase<br />

only. Two (2) ID’s are required:<br />

Current <strong>Harbor</strong> <strong>College</strong> registration fee receipt or<br />

Current <strong>Harbor</strong> <strong>College</strong> student identification card; <strong>and</strong><br />

Valid California Drivers License or California ID.<br />

Checks are to be made out to <strong>Harbor</strong> <strong>College</strong> Bookstore. No out of<br />

L.A. County or Out Of State checks will be accepted. Visa, MasterCard,<br />

<strong>and</strong> Discover card are accepted if the card holder is present to sign<br />

<strong>and</strong> shows a California Driver’s License or California Picture I.D.<br />

Bookstore Refund Policy<br />

Textbooks are eligible for refund under the following conditions:<br />

1. All textbooks being returned must be accompanied by<br />

a current dated cash register sales receipt issued by the<br />

Bookstore. No exceptions.<br />

2. Textbooks must be returned within the first 5 days of the<br />

Fall <strong>and</strong> Spring semesters <strong>and</strong> within the first 5 days of an<br />

Intersession <strong>and</strong> short-term classes. Holidays, Saturdays<br />

<strong>and</strong> Sundays are not considered school days.<br />

3. Textbooks must be returned in the same condition as<br />

when purchased. New books must be free of any markings,<br />

underlinings, soil marks or erasures, <strong>and</strong> all pages must<br />

be intact. Used textbooks must be returned in a resalable<br />

condition for refund, <strong>and</strong> all pages must be intact.<br />

Determination of the condition of new or used textbooks<br />

will be made by the bookstore staff.<br />
