ASSESSMENT OF LEARNING OBJECTIVES<br />

Mastery of the curriculum for a major in Sociology is measured by completion of all major<br />

requirements with a ―C‖ or higher in every course. As stated above, one (1) grade of ―C-‖ may<br />

count towards the major, so long as the grade is not awarded in any of the following courses:<br />

Introduction to Statistics (MATH 1114)<br />

Research Methods (SOCI 3900)<br />

Development of Sociological Thought (SOCI 4000)<br />

These courses should be satisfied with a grade of ―C‖ or higher.<br />

REQUIREMENTS FOR A MAJOR IN SOCIOLOGY<br />

Sociology majors are required to complete the following courses, totaling 30 semester hours.<br />

All courses for the major should be completed with a grade of ―C‖ or higher. The only exception<br />

is as follows:<br />

One grade of ―C-‖ will be allowed to count toward the major, so long as it does not occur<br />

with any of the following three (3) courses:<br />

Introduction to Statistics (MATH 1114)<br />

Research Methods (SOCI 3900)<br />

Development of Sociological Thought (SOCI 4000)<br />

These courses should be satisfied with a grade of ―C‖ or higher. Under no circumstances<br />

will a ―D‖ grade count toward the major.<br />

Foundation (15 hours)<br />

SOCI 1000 Principles of Sociology<br />

SOCI 2000 Social Problems and Policy<br />

SOCI 3000 Social Change<br />

SOCI 4000 Development of Sociological Thought<br />

SOCI 4200 Social Inequality<br />

Research (6 hours)<br />

MATH 1114 Introduction to Statistics<br />

SOCI 3900 Research Methods in Social Science<br />

Electives/Substantive Component (9 hours)<br />

Students may complete the major by electing three (3) other courses from the following list,<br />

two (2) of which must be at the 3000 level or higher:<br />
