REQUIREMENTS FOR A MINOR IN MUSIC<br />
To obtain a minor in Music, students must complete the following courses:<br />
MUSI 1101 and 1102 Theory 1-2 6 hours<br />
MUSI 1113 and 1114 Ear Training 1-2 4 hours<br />
MUSI 1110 Literature & Language of Music 2 hours<br />
MUSI 1103 Piano 1 1 hour<br />
MUSI 2301 (or MUSI 2302) Music History 1 (or 2)<br />

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS (MUSI)<br />
MUSI 0999 Music Seminar. (0) Fall and Spring<br />
A weekly seminar/recital hour featuring student performances, master classes, and presentations<br />
by guest artists.<br />
*MUSI 1100 Music Fundamentals. (3) as needed<br />
Provides an introduction to elementary music theory, including scales, key signatures, staff<br />
notation, clefs, rhythm, meter, intervals, and general music terminology.<br />
*MUSI 1101 Theory 1. (3) Fall<br />
This course focuses on Diatonic Harmony and is designed to provide the student with the basics<br />
of music theory, including scales, key signatures, intervals, triads, beginning voice leading,<br />
harmony, figured bass, basic reductive and hierarchic graphing techniques. Some lab time will be<br />
devoted to Internet music resources and notation using FINALE. Other topics will include basic<br />
MAC computer skills, especially as they pertain to music theory and CAI in music theory. Must<br />
be taken with MUSI 1113.<br />
Prerequisite: MUSI 1100 or passing score on Theory Placement Exam<br />
MUSI 1102 Theory 2. (3) Spring<br />
Continuation of MUSI 1101. This course focuses on Chromatic Harmony and Form and is<br />
designed to provide the student experience with intermediate-level music theory topics,<br />
including: phrase structure, non-chord tones, voice leading, harmony, figured bass, modulations,<br />
and form (binary, ternary, variations, etc.). Some lab time will be devoted to Internet music<br />
resources and notation using FINALE. Other topics will include basic MAC computer skills,<br />
especially as they pertain to music theory and CAI in music theory.<br />
Prerequisite: MUSI 1101<br />
MUSI 1103 Piano 1. (1) Spring<br />
Beginning instruction in piano for music majors with no previous keyboard training.<br />
Development of basic reading skills.<br />
MUSI 1104 Piano 2. (1) Fall<br />
Continuation of Piano 1 with additional emphasis on sight-reading.<br />
Prerequisite: MUSI 1103 or permission of instructor.<br />
