INTRODUCTION<br />

SPANISH / MAJOR AND MINOR IN SPANISH<br />

The ability to speak Spanish is becoming an asset, if not a necessity, in the marketplace. This<br />

need is already occurring in such diverse fields as business, education, health care, law, and<br />

social work. In order to better prepare students to meet this growing need in their future fields,<br />

we offer a major and a minor in Spanish. While not required, study abroad is strongly<br />

encouraged for both majors and minors to improve language fluency and cultural awareness.<br />

REQUIREMENTS FOR A MAJOR IN SPANISH<br />

A major in Spanish consists of a total of 36 semester hours. Thirty (30) of these hours are in<br />

Spanish courses above SPAN 1102. Required courses are as follows:<br />

SPAN 2103 Intermediate Spanish I<br />

3 hours<br />

SPAN 2105 Intermediate Spanish II<br />

3 hours<br />

SPAN 2106 Introduction to Hispanic Literature 3 hours<br />

SPAN 3000 Spanish Conversation and Composition I 3 hours<br />

SPAN 3001 Spanish Conversation and Composition II 3 hours<br />

SPAN 3002 Hispanic Culture and Civilization 3 hours<br />

SPAN 4000 Latin American Literature<br />

3 hours<br />

SPAN 4001 Peninsular Spanish Literature<br />

3hours<br />

Plus:<br />

Two (2) SPAN electives in at the 3000 level or above<br />

6 hours<br />

The remaining six (6) hours of the major consist of two (2) Latin American Studies (LAST)<br />

electives.<br />

REQUIREMENTS FOR A MINOR IN SPANISH<br />

A minor in Spanish consists of 18 semester hours, all in Spanish courses above SPAN 1102.<br />

Required courses are as follows:<br />

SPAN 2103 Intermediate Spanish I<br />

3 hours<br />

SPAN 2105 Intermediate Spanish II<br />

3 hours<br />

SPAN 2106 Introduction to Hispanic Literature 3 hours<br />

SPAN 3000 Spanish Conversation and Composition 3 hours<br />

SPAN 3001 Spanish Conversation and Composition II 3 hours<br />

Plus:<br />

One (1) SPAN elective at the 3000 level or above 3 hours<br />

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS (SPAN)<br />

SPAN 1101 Elementary Spanish I. (3)<br />

A course for beginners, with intensive practice in pronunciation, essentials of grammar, and<br />

reading of simple prose.<br />
