LATIN AMERICAN STUDIES AND<br />

MODERN LANGUAGES<br />

Success in achieving the objectives of all majors and minors in this department (except for the<br />

minor in Japanese studies, which has its own distinct learning objectives and assessment<br />

methods) will be demonstrated in the following ways:<br />

completion of each major/minor course with a grade of C or better;<br />

completion of an exit survey.<br />

INTRODUCTION<br />

MINOR IN LATIN AMERICAN STUDIES<br />

Latin American Studies is an interdisciplinary program that introduces the student to the cultural<br />

diversity and richness of Latin America and its people. A minor in Latin American Studies<br />

enhances one's career opportunities and effectiveness in such fields as business, government,<br />

health care, journalism, law, and social work.<br />

REQUIREMENTS FOR A MINOR IN LATIN AMERICAN STUDIES<br />

While the minor in Latin American Studies currently requires six (6) hours of Spanish language<br />

study, students are encouraged to take more Spanish courses in order to develop basic<br />

conversational fluency. In addition, study abroad is strongly encouraged because it provides the<br />

student with total cultural immersion. At present, the <strong>College</strong> offers a minor in Latin American<br />

Studies.<br />

The minor in Latin American Studies consists of the following 18 semester hours of<br />

coursework:<br />

SPAN courses<br />

LAST 1104 (Introduction to Latin American Culture)<br />

LAST 2000 (Introduction to Latin American Studies)<br />

LAST 3110 (Special Topics) or SPAN 3110<br />

Elective in either LAST or SPAN (3000 level or above)<br />

*LAST 1104 Introduction to Latin American Culture. (3)<br />

A study of the art, literature, history, and anthropology of Latin America (LANG 2000 may be<br />

taken for LAST 1104).<br />

LAST 1199 Latin American Travel Seminar. (1-9)<br />

A travel-study seminar that provides valuable educational experience through close contact with<br />

the contemporary life and civilization of a selected Latin American country. Basic academic<br />

preparation in the history and customs of the target culture is undertaken before departure.<br />

Prerequisites: SPAN 1101, SPAN 1102, and SPAN 2103 or permission of<br />

instructor and chair of Latin American Studies<br />
