HUM110 Introduction to Jazz<br />

3 credits; 3 hours<br />

This course is designed to develop an understanding and appreciation<br />

of jazz as a folk art. The music and characteristics of various<br />

styles, including Dixieland, blues, ragtime, boogie woogie,<br />

hop, cool, funky, eclectic and jazz-fusion rock, will be studied<br />

through recordings and classroom performances. Emphasis will<br />

be on the stylistic characteristics of jazz piano, jazz/blues vocalists,<br />

the rhythm section, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, trumpet<br />

and trombone. The course will involve outside reading and listening,<br />

as well as performances and lecture/demonstrations.<br />

Prerequisite: CSE099, ENA/ENG/ESA099/ENC101<br />

HUM140 Music Theory I<br />

3 credits; 3 hours<br />

This course is designed for beginning musicians and those who<br />

would like to learn to read, write, and understand the basic structure<br />

of music. They will study both the sight and sound of<br />

different tonal and modal scales. Diatonic intervals, primary<br />

chords, and key signatures also will be covered. Students will learn<br />

to write simple melodies in staff notation from melodic dictation.<br />

In addition, this course will emphasize reading music using treble<br />

and bass clefs, singing and playing simple melodic and harmonic<br />

lines, as well as writing simple melodies and primary chords using<br />

staff notation.<br />

Prerequisite: CSE099, MAT095<br />

Pre- or Corequisite: ENA/ENG/ESA099/ENC101<br />

HUM144 Musicianship I<br />

3 credits; 3 hours<br />

This course is designed to provide students with the basic skills<br />

necessary to effectively read, perform, learn, practice and rehearse<br />

music, and to reinforce these concepts for the more advanced student.<br />

This course will provide students with a solid musical foundation<br />

and with the musical problem solving skills that will enable<br />

them to perform music with confidence and ease. This course is<br />

suggested for all students who wish to perform any type of music,<br />

and is open to students of all abilities and instruments.<br />

Prerequisite: CSE099, ESL095, MAT095<br />

Pre- or Corequisite: ENA/ENG/ESA099/ENC101<br />

HUM146 Music Audio Recording I<br />

3 credits; 4 hours (3 lecture, 1 lab)<br />

This course will introduce students to music audio recording using<br />

industry-standard software, such as ProTools. Topics covered will<br />

include digital recording, mixing and editing on an introductory<br />

level. Students need not have any prior experience.<br />

Prerequisites: CSE099, ENA/ENG/ESA099/ENC101, MAT095<br />

HUM147, Music Audio Recording 2<br />

3 credits; 3 hours<br />

This course more extensively examines theories and technologies,<br />

used in audio productions for music and provides the student with<br />

a vocabulary covering the area of audio production. Students learn<br />

the techniques and technology used in modern multi-track studios<br />

and participates in intensive hands-on work in a multi-track<br />

recording studio using Pro Tools hardware and software and plugin<br />

signal processors. Emphasis is on stereo and multi-track editing<br />

and use of plug-ins, mixing and post productions.<br />

Prerequisite: HUM146<br />

HUM151 Contemporary Vocal Ensemble<br />

1 credit; 3 hours<br />

Emphasis is on the preparation for public performance of contemporary<br />

choral music for small vocal ensemble with two to four<br />

voices on each part. The repertory will include arrangements in a<br />

variety of contemporary vocal idioms: gospel, musical theatre,<br />

jazz. Performances of original works will also be encouraged.<br />

Enrollment will be limited to 20 students. A student may take<br />

Contemporary Vocal Ensemble five sessions for credit, or audit<br />

without credit.<br />

Prerequisite: CSE099<br />

HUM155 Voice Class I<br />

3 credits; 3 hours<br />

Emphasis is on the development of the voice for solo performance.<br />

Each student will explore the music most suitable for his or her<br />

individual voice or singing style. Class work includes basic music<br />

reading, vocal exercises, stage conduct, and vocal styles. There will<br />

be both individual and group vocal work in class, including daily<br />

solo stage performance. Use of recording and TV taping for development<br />

of style and stage professionalism is included.<br />

Prerequisite: ENA/ENG/ESA099/ENC101, MAT095<br />

HUM156 Voice Class II<br />

3 credits; 3 hours<br />

Based on foundations and experience in HUM 155, emphasis is<br />

on individual vocal and professional development in performance.<br />

Class work includes advanced vocal exercises, stage conduct and<br />

style, daily solo performance, use of recording techniques, stage<br />

and TV taping. Experience involves preparation of resumes and<br />

professional programs in various styles of vocal music. Actual<br />

working experience will include techniques and adaptations<br />

required in TV, recording, opera, clubs, orchestras, and combos.<br />

Business aspects of the vocal music profession will be investigated,<br />

including: agents, publicity, managers and contracts. Public<br />

performance on campus is required. Opportunities for auditions<br />

in New York City for professional and semi-professional engagements<br />

are provided.<br />

Prerequisite: MAT095, HUM101 or equivalent, HUM155 or<br />

equivalent<br />

HUM170 Guitar I<br />

3 credits; 3 hours<br />

This course is designed to introduce students to the fundamentals<br />

of acoustic guitar technique: strumming/picking technique, correct<br />

fingerings, and tuning the guitar. Students will be introduced to the<br />

rudiments of music (types of notes, note values, time signatures,<br />

chord structure and scales). Students will learn to read and perform<br />

simple guitar melodies/chords and they need not have had previous<br />

guitar instruction. Guitars will be provided for student use.<br />
