SCT211 Therapeutic Procedures I<br />

4 credits; 6 hours (2 lecture, 4 lab)<br />

This course will focus on the principles and use of heat, cold, water,<br />

light and traditional massage as they relate to physical therapy.<br />

Topics include: proper preparation of patients, treatment areas and<br />

equipment, application of hot and cold packs, paraffin, whirlpool,<br />

infrared, ultraviolet, basic massage, intermittent compression,<br />

sterile technique and wound debridement. Physical therapy techniques<br />

for the treatment of respiratory disorders are included.<br />

SCT212 Therapeutic Procedures II<br />

3 credits; 4 hours (2 lecture, 2 lab)<br />

The course is the second of two modality courses. Advanced physical<br />

therapy procedures and techniques will be explored as<br />

described by the American Physical Therapy Association<br />

Preferred Physical Therapist Practice Patterns with the focus on<br />

pain management, integumentary care, neuromotor intervention<br />

and musculoskeletal management. Topics include: application<br />

of electrical stimulation, phototherapy, (ultraviolet radiation<br />

and laser) and hydrotherapy theories.<br />

SCT220 Mobility Skills in Physical Therapy<br />

3 credits; 4 hours (2 lecture, 2 lab)<br />

Principles of massage and various techniques for specific clinical<br />

applications are introduced. Bed and mat mobility skills, including<br />

body mechanics, wheelchair prescription, training in wheelchair<br />

skills and transfer training skills will be introduced. Vital<br />

sign measurement will be introduced. Students will be introduced<br />

to architectural barriers as they affect the disabled.<br />

SCT221 Functional Gait Training Skills<br />

3 credits; 4 hours (2 lecture, 2 lab)<br />

This course reviews the principles of mobility activities in their<br />

application to various physical disabilities. The students will be<br />

introduced to the basic concepts of the normal gait cycle and gait<br />

deviations. Gait training, including training with the use of assistive<br />

devices and instruction on level and elevated surfaces, will be<br />

addressed. Basic concepts of orthotic and prosthetic descriptions,<br />

residual limb care and wrapping will be introduced.<br />

SCT230 Orthopedic Therapeutic Exercise<br />

4 credits; 6 hours (3 lecture, 3 lab)<br />

This course provides the rationale for clinical application of therapeutic<br />

exercise training as it relates to orthopedic pathologies.<br />

Students will become familiar with the theory and clinical concepts<br />

of exercise training as it relates to strength, power and endurance.<br />

Students will perform evidence-based research to identify therapeutic<br />

protocols and apply appropriate exercise techniques.<br />

Prerequisite: SCT220, SCT212, SCT221;<br />

Pre- or Corequisite: SCT231<br />

SCT231 Neuromuscular Rehabilitation<br />

4 credits; 6 hours (3 lecture, 3 lab)<br />

This course provides the rationale for clinical application of therapeutic<br />

exercise as it relates to neuromuscular rehabilitation. Students<br />

will be introduced to and will apply various therapeutic<br />

protocols such as Brunnstrom, Bobath and Proprioceptive Neuromuscular<br />

Facilitation Techniques. Students will focus on the<br />

implementation of treatment plans developed by the physical<br />

therapist.<br />

Prerequisite: SCT212, SCT221<br />

Pre- or Corequisite: SCT230<br />

SCT290 Physical Therapist Assistant Clinical Affiliation<br />

and Seminar I<br />

2 credits; 1 seminar hour, 15-20 internship hours<br />

This internship provides students with an experience-based learning<br />

opportunity to: explore or confirm career interests and plans;<br />

apply classroom learning to real work situations; and practice, and<br />

strengthen interpersonal or technical skills. A minimum of 15-20<br />

hours per week at the internship site is required during the Co-op<br />

cycle. A concurrent seminar provides a framework for analyzing<br />

and evaluating students’ internship experiences. During Fall I and<br />

Spring I, students must take six additional credits to be certified<br />

as a full-time student.<br />

SCT291 Physical Therapist Assistant Clinical Affiliation &<br />

Seminar II<br />

3 credits; 19 hours (1 lecture, 18 affiliation)<br />

This course provides students with an opportunity to apply and<br />

integrate the theory and practice of physical therapist assistant<br />

skills in clinical settings under the supervision of a physical therapist.<br />

The biweekly seminar integrates the students’ experiences<br />

with their classroom training. Students are required to provide<br />

their own uniform, liability insurance and proof of a physical<br />

examination.<br />

Prerequisite: SCT212, SCT250, permission of PT Assistant<br />

Program Coordinator<br />

SCT292 Physical Therapist Assistant Clinical Affiliation &<br />

Seminar III<br />

3 credits; 19 hours (1 lecture, 18 affiliation)<br />

This course provides students with the continued opportunity to<br />

apply and integrate the theory and practice of physical therapist<br />

assistant skills in clinical settings under the supervision of a physical<br />

therapist. The student is expected to assume increased responsibility<br />

for treatments and administrative tasks, and to improve<br />

his/her ability to manage time effectively. Students are required<br />

to attend scheduled seminars and provide their own uniform,<br />

liability insurance, and proof of a physical examination.<br />
