ELS210 Advanced Spanish Composition<br />

3 credits; 3 hours<br />

This course is designed as an introduction to the study of fiction and<br />

stylistics in the Spanish language. Students learn to identify and utilize<br />

effective communicative strategies in written Spanish. They also<br />

build an adequate vocabulary for career or academic purposes.<br />

Weekly assignments will stress critical and composition skills.<br />

Prerequisite: Placement Exam<br />

ELS215, Introduction to Hispanic Literature<br />

3 credits; 3 hours<br />

This course is designed to introduce students to Hispanic —Spanish<br />

and Latin American — fiction, poetry, and drama through readings<br />

of representative authors from major periods, and to<br />

familiarize students with the basic tools and methodology of<br />

literary analysis. This course is taught in Spanish.<br />

Prerequisite: ELS106 or Exemption Exam<br />

ELS220 Spanish for Global Business<br />

3 credits; 3 hours<br />

The course is designed to enable the student to become familiar<br />

with the culture of the business world in Spanish-speaking countries<br />

and with basic concepts of business, economics and finance.<br />

Emphasis is placed on both oral and written communications that<br />

are standard in Latin American and Spanish business settings. Students<br />

will build language skills around pertinent terminology and<br />

develop a cross-cultural understanding of different styles of conducting<br />

business.<br />

ELS230, History of the Spanish Language<br />

3 credits; 3 hours<br />

This course traces the development of the Spanish language from<br />

the Vulgar Latin of the Middle Ages to contemporary Standard<br />

Spanish. The course focuses on the historical and cultural factors<br />

that determined changes in the morphological, lexical, phonological,<br />

semantic and syntactic development of modern Spanish. The<br />

influence of Arabic, the Amerindian and African languages, as well<br />

as contact with modern English will be considered. Taught in<br />

Spanish.<br />

ELS250 Contemporary Latin American Fiction in<br />

Translation<br />

3 credits; 3 hours<br />

This course explores the thematic and stylistic variety of contemporary<br />

Latin American fiction in English translation. Students will<br />

explore the themes of dictatorship, struggle with nature, the plight<br />

of natives, mestizaje, social and political unrest and alienation<br />

through the analysis of representative stories, novellas and novels.<br />

Experimental and fantastic fiction will also be considered. Students<br />

will learn about the literary movements that influenced the<br />

writers in question.<br />

ELS270 Literature of the Caribbean<br />

3 credits; 3 hours<br />

This course deals with a comparative study of the novel, drama,<br />

poetry, and essay of the countries in the Caribbean basin. Course<br />

content will change according to instructor and student preferences.<br />

Representative authors may include Marti, Hostos, Llorens<br />

Torres, Guillen, Lezama Lima, Mir, Bosch, Cesaire, Carpentier and<br />

Ferre.<br />

Tibetan<br />

ELT101 Elementary Tibetan I<br />

3 credits, 4 hours (3 lecture, 1 lab)<br />

This is a course for those with little or no understanding of<br />

Tibetan. The course will focus on development of aural comprehension,<br />

and speaking and reading skills. Students will be expected<br />

to correctly produce the Tibetan sound system, master and reproduce<br />

basic sentence patterns, and achieve the ability to engage in<br />

basic Tibetan conversation.<br />

Pre-corequisite: ESL098<br />

Note: A student must successfully complete ELT102 Elementary<br />

Tibetan II before credit is granted for ELT101 Elementary<br />

Tibetan I.<br />

ELT102 Elementary Tibetan II<br />

3 credits; 4 hours (3 lecture, 1 lab)<br />

This course is a continuation of Elementary Tibetan I. The course<br />

will focus on development of aural comprehension, speaking and<br />

reading skills. Students will be expected to correctly produce the<br />

Tibetan sound system, master and reproduce basic sentence patterns,<br />

and achieve the ability to engage in basic Tibetan conversation<br />

at an advanced basic to low intermediate level.<br />

Prerequisite: ELT101 or Exemption Exam<br />

ELT105 Tibetan for Heritage Speakers<br />

3 credits, 4 hours (3 lecture, 1 lab)<br />

This course is designed for heritage speakers of Tibetan. Communicative<br />

approach is used to develop conversational skills and provide<br />

the student with a foundation in grammar, pronunciation and<br />

vocabulary. The main goal is that students improve their knowledge<br />

of the Tibetan language and culture through reading selected<br />

literary and sacred texts. This class is taught in Tibetan.<br />
