ELI102 Elementary Italian II<br />

3 credits; 4 hours (3 lecture, 1 lab)<br />

This is a continuation of Elementary Italian I.<br />

Prerequisite: ELI101<br />

ELI103 Intermediate Italian<br />

3 credits; 4 hours (3 lecture, 1 lab)<br />

This course is designed to further develop functional language<br />

proficiency and increase the ability to communicate accurately in<br />

Italian within a socio-cultural context. The four communicative<br />

skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing are emphasized<br />

with particular attention paid to sentence and paragraph structure,<br />

grammatical features, and oral and written fluency. This<br />

course is taught in Italian.<br />

Prerequisite: ELI102<br />

ELI150 Skills Maintenance in Modern Language<br />

1 credit; 2 lab hours<br />

This laboratory course is designed to maintain foreign language<br />

skills during an interruption in the study sequence. Individual<br />

instruction is directly related to student’s particular field of<br />

interest. Hours individually arranged.<br />

Prerequisite: CSE099, ENA/ENG/ESA099/ENC101<br />

ELI250 Italian Literature in Translation<br />

3 credits; 3 hours<br />

This introduction to Italian literature begins with a discussion of<br />

Dante’s Hell as a medieval outcry against political corruption. The<br />

course concludes with Italo Calvino’s twentieth-century portrait of<br />

a man who takes to the trees as a form of social commentary. The<br />

class will explore literary themes in social and political context<br />

through diverse media. The course will be conducted in English,<br />

and students will read the literary works in English translation.<br />

Prerequisite: CSE099, ENA/ENG/ESA099/ENC101, ESL098<br />

Japanese<br />

ELJ101 Elementary Japanese 1<br />

3 credits; 4 hours (3 lecture, 1 lab)<br />

This course for beginners is designed to develop listening, speaking,<br />

reading, and writing skills through work in the classroom and<br />

the language laboratory.<br />

Note: A student must successfully complete ELJ102 before<br />

credit is granted for ELJ101 Elementary Japanese 1.<br />

ELJ102 Elementary Japanese 2<br />

3 credits; 4 hours (3 lecture, 1 lab)<br />

This course is a continuation of ELJ101 Elementary Japanese 1.<br />

Pre- or Corequisite: ELJ101<br />

ELJ103 Intermediate Japanese 1<br />

3 credits; 4 hours (3 lecture, 1 lab)<br />

This course is designed to further develop functional language proficiency<br />

and increase the ability to communicate accurately in<br />

Japanese within a socio-cultural context. The four communicative<br />

skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing are emphasized,<br />

with particular attention paid to sentence and paragraph structure,<br />

grammatical features, and oral and written fluency. The Kanji writing<br />

system will be introduced and reinforced. Taught in Japanese.<br />

Prerequisite: ELJ102 or Exemption Exam<br />

Pre- or Corequisite: CSE095, ESL097<br />

ELJ104 Intermediate Japanese 2<br />

3 credits; 4 hours (3 lecture, 1 lab)<br />

This course is designed as a continuation of Intermediate Japanese<br />

1 with greater emphasis on reading and writing. It also continues<br />

to familiarize students with literary Japanese. This course<br />

will be taught in Japanese.<br />

Prerequisite: ELJ103 or Exemption Exam<br />

Pre- or Corequisite: CSE095, ESL097<br />

ELJ110 Intensive Japanese 1 & 2<br />

6 credits, 8 hours (6 lecture, 2 lab)<br />

This course is an intensive course for beginners using a communicative<br />

approach to develop conversational skills and provide the<br />

student with a foundation in Japanese grammar, pronunciation,<br />

vocabulary, and familiarity with the culture of Japanese-speaking<br />

people. This course is equivalent to ELJ101-102, and it is not open<br />

to native or heritage speakers of Japanese.<br />

Prerequisite: ESL098<br />

ELJ201 Modern Japanese Literature<br />

3 credits; 3 hours<br />

This course will familiarize students with modern Japanese literature<br />

through selected readings with an emphasis on expository<br />

style. Representative authors from the Meiji, Taisho, Showa and<br />

post-war literature will be selected. [Readings are in Japanese]<br />

Prerequisite: Exemption Exam<br />

ELJ250 Japanese Literature In Translation<br />

3 credits; 3 hours<br />

This course is an introduction to Japanese literature in English<br />

translation. Selected classics of Japanese literature representative<br />

of the major genres from the early to the modern period will be<br />

read and discussed. Thematic and stylistic variety of various genres<br />

will be explored. Knowledge of the Japanese language is not<br />

required.<br />

Prerequisite: ENC/ENG101<br />

Korean<br />

ELK101 Elementary Korean I<br />

3 credits; 4 hours (3 lecture, 1 lab)<br />

This course for beginners is designed to develop listening, speaking,<br />

reading, and writing skills through work in the classroom and<br />

the language laboratory. The Korean script han’gul will be used<br />

from the onset.<br />

Note: Student must successfully complete ELK102 before credit<br />

toward graduation is granted for ELK101 Elementary Korean 1.<br />

Prerequisite: CSE099, ENA/ENG/ESA099/ENC101<br />
