ELF101 Elementary French I<br />

3 credits; 4 hours (3 lecture, 1 lab)<br />

This course for beginners is designed to develop listening, speaking,<br />

reading and writing skills through work in the classroom and<br />

the language laboratory.<br />

Prerequisite: CSE099, ENA/ENG/ESA099/ENC101<br />

Note: A student must successfully complete ELF 102 before<br />

credit is granted for ELF101 Elementary French 1.<br />

ELF102 Elementary French II<br />

3 credits; 4 hours (3 lecture, 1 lab)<br />

This is a continuation of Elementary French I.<br />

Prerequisite: ELF101<br />

ELF103 Intermediate French<br />

3 credits; 4 hours (3 lecture, 1 lab)<br />

This course is designed to further develop language skills. The<br />

relationship between speaking, reading and writing is emphasized.<br />

Prerequisite: Exemption Exam<br />

ELF105 French for Francophones<br />

3 credits; 4 hours (3 lecture, 1 lab)<br />

This course is designed to enable students who speak French at an<br />

intermediate level to develop further oral and written skills<br />

through interviews, reading and writing assignments. This course<br />

will also emphasize spelling, grammar and vocabulary needed to<br />

pursue academic coursework in French.<br />

ELF150 Skills Maintenance in Modern Language<br />

1 credit; 2 lab hours<br />

This laboratory course is designed to maintain foreign language<br />

skills during an interruption in the study sequence. Individual<br />

instruction is directly related to a student’s particular field of<br />

interest. Hours are individually arranged.<br />

Prerequisite: CSE099, ENA/ENG/ESA099/ENC101<br />

ELF201 French Literature from a Global Perspective<br />

3 credits; 3 hours<br />

This course is an introduction to the literature and culture of<br />

French speaking countries through various forms of literary<br />

expression. Readings and discussions will emphasize the rich<br />

contributions of African, Caribbean and North American writers<br />

and artists, as well as responses to them from France and the<br />

United States.<br />

Prerequisite: Placement Exam<br />

ELF250 Contemporary Francophone Literature in Translation<br />

3 credits; 3 hours<br />

This course examines the thematic and stylistic variety of contemporary<br />

French language literature in different genres in English<br />

translation. Students will explore themes of identity, memory,<br />

time, sex and sexuality, the Pan-African diaspora, colonial and<br />

post-colonial relations, the Enlightenment heritage, the links to<br />

national and international movements, and the politics of resistance<br />

and language choice through the analysis of representative<br />

poems, stories, novellas and novels.<br />

ELG103 Intermediate Greek<br />

3 credits; 4 hours (3 lecture, 1 lab)<br />

This course is designed to further develop language skills. The<br />

ELH101 Elementary Hebrew I<br />

3 credits; 4 hours (3 lecture, 1 lab)<br />

This course for beginners is designed to develop listening, speaking,<br />

Note: A student must successfully complete ELH102 before<br />

credit is granted for ELH101 Elementary Hebrew I.<br />

ELH102 Elementary Hebrew II<br />

This course is a continuation of Elementary Hebrew I. It is<br />

designed to further develop listening, speaking, reading and writing<br />

through work in the classroom and the language laboratory.<br />

ELH201 Contemporary Hebrew Literature<br />

3 credits; 3 hours<br />

This course is an introduction to literature written in modern<br />

Hebrew and the culture of Israel. Its goal is to familiarize students<br />

with an author, a genre or a theme and to explore the socio-cultural<br />

milieu in which it developed. This course is taught in modern Hebrew.<br />

Italian<br />

ELI101 Elementary Italian I<br />

3 credits; 4 hours (3 lecture, 1 lab)<br />

This course for beginners is designed to develop listening, speaking,<br />

reading, and writing skills through work in the classroom and<br />
