BTC171 Database Applications<br />

3 credits; 4 hours (3 lecture, 1 lab)<br />

This course introduces database application software. Students<br />

will learn the use of a database through extensive hands-on experience.<br />

The course will emphasize the use of alternative methods of<br />

searching the database, selective retrieval of information and<br />

report/label preparation. Students will explore the use of advanced<br />

functions in order to combine files, modify original design, update<br />

records and become familiar with command-driven and menu<br />

prompts in a Windows environment.<br />

Prerequisite: BTC100<br />

BTC172 Presentation Graphics<br />

3 credits; 4 hours (3 lecture, 1 lab)<br />

This course introduces students to presentation graphics software.<br />

Students will receive hands-on training relating to designing slides,<br />

speaker’s notes and handouts to produce professionally prepared<br />

electronic slide shows. The use of background and foreground<br />

colors, graphics, whitespace, and text material will be stressed in<br />

the development of electronic slide shows. Sound (music, recorded<br />

voice, etc.), video clips and animation are also covered.<br />

Prerequisite: BTO116, BTC100 or MAC101<br />

BTC173 Integrated Software Systems<br />

3 credits; 4 hours (3 lecture, 1 lab)<br />

This course is the capstone to the Microcomputer Systems and<br />

Applications curriculum. Instruction will emphasize the systems<br />

and procedures used to process information in an integrated<br />

software environment. Students will be required to do projects utilizing<br />

advanced database and spreadsheet concepts and graphics<br />

software. Integrated software applications will be completed in a<br />

simulated office environment.<br />

Prerequisite: ENC/ENG101, BTC170, BTC171, BTC172<br />

BTC175 Introduction to Desktop Publishing<br />

3 credits; 4 hours (3 lecture, 1 lab)<br />

This course introduces students to the basics of desktop publishing<br />

— the art of producing typeset documents. Familiarization<br />

with equipment, desktop publishing software and electronic printing<br />

will be emphasized. Students will receive hands-on training<br />

relating to the art of typesetting on the microcomputer. Topics<br />

include input, composition and output in electronic publishing.<br />

Prerequisite: BTC100 or MAC101<br />

BTC200 Introduction to Information Systems<br />

3 credits; 4 hours (3 lecture, 1 lab)<br />

This course introduces students to the use of computers and other<br />

information systems and technologies to solve problems in organizations.<br />

Topics include management information systems (MIS),<br />

hardware and software concepts, the organization of information<br />

using systems analysis and design, electronic commerce and<br />

contemporary applications of technology in organizational environments.<br />

Students will explore ethical perspectives and globalization<br />

issues and will cultivate an awareness of emerging processes.<br />

Prerequisite: BTM101<br />

BTC270 Data Center Operations: The Basics<br />

3 credits; 4 hours (3 lecture, 1 lab)<br />

This course introduces students to the field of computer operations<br />

and the duties associated with the job of computer operator.<br />

Students will be introduced to the operation and maintenance of<br />

computer hardware and peripherals on the mainframe, and to the<br />

keeping of vital logs associated with job scheduling, shift work,<br />

hardware repair and facility scheduling. Students will also gain a<br />

working knowledge of the VM/SP operating system utilizing CMS<br />

and CP commands.<br />

Prerequisite: BTC100 or BTC101 or MAC101<br />

Pre- or Corequisite: ENC/ENG101<br />

BTC275 Data Center Operations: Advanced Topics<br />

3 credits; 4 hours (3 lecture, 1 lab)<br />

This course is a continuation of Data Center Operations: The<br />

Basics, and will emphasize advanced computer system operations<br />

including such topics as command languages, console commands,<br />

analysis of various microcomputer and mainframe operating systems<br />

and computer resource management. This course will cover<br />

such operating systems as MS-DOS, UNIX, MVS, and VM.<br />

CSE095 Essentials of Reading I<br />

This course develops students’ critical reading and studying skills.<br />

Literal and inferential levels of comprehension of college-level<br />

reading materials will be developed through the use of reading<br />

strategies, vocabulary exercises and class discussions. Students will<br />

be exposed to a wide variety of readings from the academic disciplines,<br />

thereby acquiring fundamental background knowledge<br />

needed to read proficiently at the <strong>College</strong> level. Students will read<br />

both exposition and a full-length narrative.<br />

Admission to this course is based on placement test scores.<br />

CSE099 Essentials of Reading II<br />

0 credit; 5 hours (4 lecture, 1 lab)<br />

(Equivalent to First Year Institute USR099)<br />

This course reinforces reading and study strategies applied to<br />

advanced college-level texts. Emphasis is on exposition and<br />

argument as well as narrative. Elements of critical reading are<br />

introduced. Standardized reading test strategies are focal points in<br />
