<strong>LaGuardia</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong> <strong>is</strong> <strong>Hosting</strong> <strong>an</strong><br />

Asi<strong>an</strong> <strong>Cultural</strong> <strong>Festival</strong> on May 11<br />

Free <strong>an</strong>d Open to the Public<br />

Long Isl<strong>an</strong>d City, NY—May 4, 2011--To celebrate the wide r<strong>an</strong>ge of Asi<strong>an</strong> cultures that make<br />

up its student population, <strong>LaGuardia</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong> on May 11 <strong>is</strong> hosting a festival<br />

featuring talented performers from China, Jap<strong>an</strong> <strong>an</strong>d the Philippines. The event <strong>is</strong> free <strong>an</strong>d open<br />

to the public.<br />

The line up includes:<br />

• Chinese Student Club – the student singing <strong>an</strong>d d<strong>an</strong>cing group will perform Engl<strong>is</strong>h<br />

<strong>an</strong>d Chinese songs <strong>an</strong>d hip pop d<strong>an</strong>ces.<br />

• Gulam Kibria Group – the Bengali troupe will perform d<strong>an</strong>ce with a folk song. Folk<br />

song or Baul S<strong>an</strong>geet, which has always held a special place in Indi<strong>an</strong> subcontinent<br />

culture, <strong>is</strong> a folk dialect of Bengali music that <strong>is</strong> spiritual in nature.<br />

• Kinding Sindaw – the d<strong>an</strong>ce theater ensemble will perform the traditions of d<strong>an</strong>ce,<br />

music, martial arts <strong>an</strong>d storytelling of the indigenous people of the Philippines. The<br />

troupe, which has been a resident of La Mama Experimental Theater since 2000, has<br />

a broad repertory of d<strong>an</strong>ce <strong>an</strong>d music dramas from several epic myths <strong>an</strong>d legends of the<br />

country’s indigenous tribes.<br />

• Li Liu – the professionally trained acrobat from China will bring the same talents to<br />

<strong>LaGuardia</strong> that she d<strong>is</strong>played as a performer for the Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey<br />

Circus. Before coming to America, she traveled extensively throughout Europe, Africa<br />

<strong>an</strong>d Asia with the Liaoning Acrobatic Arts Troupe for m<strong>an</strong>y years, <strong>an</strong>d has performed<br />

with Zirkus Knie in Switzerl<strong>an</strong>d, Circus Krone in Germ<strong>an</strong>y <strong>an</strong>d other touring shows in<br />

Italy, Holl<strong>an</strong>d, Fr<strong>an</strong>ce, South Africa, Singapore, Jap<strong>an</strong> <strong>an</strong>d Indonesia.<br />

• National Women’s D<strong>an</strong>ce Troupe of Sri L<strong>an</strong>ka – the d<strong>an</strong>ce comp<strong>an</strong>y will perform<br />

two d<strong>is</strong>tinct kinds of d<strong>an</strong>ce—the up country <strong>an</strong>d the low country—that combine lithe<br />

graceful movements with vigorous motions.


• Reni Mimura - the Jap<strong>an</strong>ese singer <strong>an</strong>d d<strong>an</strong>cer will entertain her audience with a highenergy<br />

<strong>an</strong>d futur<strong>is</strong>tic perform<strong>an</strong>ce. Her latest CD album “Sakura” was released in 2009<br />

<strong>an</strong>d she publ<strong>is</strong>hed her first photo book “Maid in NY” in March 2010.<br />

• The New York Chinese <strong>Cultural</strong> Center – the award-winning professional troupe of<br />

professional d<strong>an</strong>cers <strong>an</strong>d musici<strong>an</strong>s that will bring the richness of traditional d<strong>an</strong>ce,<br />

Peking Opera <strong>an</strong>d music to the <strong>LaGuardia</strong> stage. The comp<strong>an</strong>y each year presents over<br />

750 perform<strong>an</strong>ces, workshops, master classes <strong>an</strong>d lecture/demonstrations throughout the<br />

U.S.<br />

• Taiko Drums <strong>an</strong>d Awa D<strong>an</strong>ce - a sham<strong>is</strong>en (Jap<strong>an</strong>ese guitar) master <strong>an</strong>d Awa d<strong>an</strong>cers<br />

will present <strong>an</strong> ensemble to the beat of Taiko drums played by Dr. Kyoko Toayama, a<br />

faculty member of <strong>LaGuardia</strong>. Mr. Yukio Koma, the Sham<strong>is</strong>en teacher, lost h<strong>is</strong> mother,<br />

aunt <strong>an</strong>d four other relatives from the recent earthquake <strong>an</strong>d tsunami in Jap<strong>an</strong> <strong>an</strong>d he <strong>is</strong><br />

playing sham<strong>is</strong>en for h<strong>is</strong> lost family members. Beautifully dressed d<strong>an</strong>cers will join the<br />

drummers.<br />

The event will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the college’s Cobblestone Courtyard at<br />

31-10 Thomson Avenue, Long Isl<strong>an</strong>d City. For more information, please call (718) 482-5213.<br />

Culinary delights from different regions of the world will be served. Also, faculty <strong>an</strong>d students<br />

will model traditional clothing from Asi<strong>an</strong> countries.<br />

<strong>LaGuardia</strong>, which has one of the most diverse student populations in the nation, serves students<br />

from more th<strong>an</strong> 46 Asi<strong>an</strong> countries <strong>an</strong>d areas including China, South Korea, Jap<strong>an</strong>, B<strong>an</strong>gladesh,<br />

Philippines, India, <strong>an</strong>d Pak<strong>is</strong>t<strong>an</strong>. Asi<strong>an</strong>s compr<strong>is</strong>e 21% of the <strong>College</strong>’s student population <strong>an</strong>d<br />

represent the fastest growing ethnic group at <strong>LaGuardia</strong>.<br />
