Meet
Janet and Jonathan
Olivella
Learning together, sharing their expertise
with others
Janet Olivella and her son Jonathan were at different crossroads in
their lives. Janet was a Registered Medical Assistant but wanted to
learn more and go further in her career. Jonathan had graduated high
school and didn’t know what he wanted to do with his life. After doing
some research Janet found out about LaGuardia’s Medical Office
Clinical Technician (MOCT) Program—which involves courses and
training in phlebotomy and electrocardiogram (EKG) administration as
well as a medical terminology component—and convinced her son to
join her.
I felt great pride in being
able to study with my son
and have him see me as
his peer...It also helped
me because I had a study
buddy living with me!
“I felt great pride in being able to study with my son and have him see
me as his peer. … It also helped me because I had a study buddy
living with me,” says Janet.
For Jonathan’s part, he says attending class with his mom was helpful
because she would tutor him in subject matter he didn’t understand.
It also gave him an incentive to try harder. “Having her there made me
want to surpass her, which led to higher grades for me,” he says.
Both are now certified phlebotomists and EKG technicians. Janet is a
Skills Instructor for the MOCT Program. “I want to continue teaching
and sharing my knowledge, as it was once passed down to me,” she
explains.
Discovering what he calls “a great love for the medical field,” Jonathan
has decided to continue his health care training in LaGuardia’s
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Program. He hopes to
eventually become a Paramedic with the New York Fire Department,
where he can apply his skills and training to help save people’s lives.
“Being a part of the LaGuardia community has given my son and
me the opportunity to meet a diverse group of people from different
countries, ranging from young adults, like my son, to ‘seasoned
adults,’ like myself, all learning under the same umbrella,” notes
Janet. “It was a joyful experience.”

Kim Kendall
Director
Career and Professional Programs (CAPP)
”Our courses provide the skills and certifications adults need
to change lives.”
Kimberly Kendall has only been with LaGuardia as Director of the Division of Adult and Continuing Education’s Career and
Professional Programs (CAPP) for six months. During that short time, however, she has added numerous programs and courses
to CAPP’s list of courses including a new Credentialed Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) Education Program
(see page 29) and the new GRE prep series (see page 44).
“Our courses provide the skills and certifications adults need to change lives,” says Ms. Kendall. “Helping students begin or
change careers is so powerful because you not only help the individual but also help their family, future employer and the local
community.”
After graduating from college, Ms. Kendall got a job teaching English as a Second Language and recalls, “I got hooked on
education.” So, in addition to her full-time work—which included founding the Baltimore branch of The Princeton Review, a
test preparation and college application assistance company, and growing it into a million dollar enterprise—for the past 12
years she’s been teaching GMAT classes part-time, helping hundreds of students get into business school. When she made the
move to New York, she decided to go to business school herself and earned her MBA. She now applies her business savvy and
penchant for education to making CAPP the most comprehensive program for professionals as possible.
Online Courses
“The students in continuing education at LaGuardia are incredibly hardworking and generous,” asserts Ms. Kendall. “They
inspire me to reach my goal and to work twice as hard to bring them the best job-training programs possible.”
Luis Vasquez had an important job: he was a security guard specializing in bomb detection at a big
Wall Street company. However, long hours working the night shift didn’t leave him much time to
spend with his children. So, he decided to serve the city in another way: as a taxi driver.
In April, Mr. Vasquez came to LaGuardia’s Taxi and FHV Driver Institute with the goal of passing the
Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) Exam and attaining his hack license. As a non-native English
speaker, the English for Taxi Drivers class, says Mr. Vasquez, helped him establish listening strategies,
while the TLC Taxi Prep Test course allowed him to focus on his weak points. “I believe by taking these
two extra classes the TLC test was easier than what I thought it would be,” he notes, adding that he
accomplished what he set out to do.
Taxi 4-Hour Continuing Education
relations and awareness of serving passengers
with disabilities. (This workshop satisfies
TLC Rule # 2-11a)
Interpreting
Carl Conde is an adjunct professor of biology
at LaGuardia. But in the fall of 2009, he took a big
step towards another professional goal: he completed
“Healthcare Interpreting for Spanish/English
(Introduction Course)”and passed the national exam,
making him a certified healthcare interpreter. Now,
with credential in hand and experience from an
internship at Elmhurst Hospital in Queens, Mr. Conde
is looking to find work in his new field. “I intend to
use the knowledge I acquired to better humanity, one
interpretation at a time,” he noted.
For the nurse who requires a refresher, the new graduate
who requires increased competence, and the nursing
student who requires practice. Sharpen your physical
assessment skills and increase your competency in
performing auscultation, percussion, palpation, and
inspection in this one-day workshop. Collect assessment
data through evaluation of each body system, build
reasoning through data analysis, and conduct a complete
physical assessment. Gain hands-on experience in our
upgraded nursing labs. For NYSNA CEU’s, please call
Get your GED at LaGuardia Community College
and Discover a World of Opportunities!
Kenny Fisher Mack dropped out of high school in the 9th grade
but found his way back to school via the Adult Learning Center’s GED
program. With GED certificate in hand and help from LaGuardia’s College
Transition Initiative, he’s now a business administration major. “College
is a place I never saw myself … Now I’m here, and it’s exciting,” he says.
Kenny plans to revolutionize the way managers interact with and keep
track of their employees, increasing effectiveness as well as fostering
mentorship.
They did, and so can YOU!
Kenny Fisher Mack and Linh Le
Winners of the Peter Jennings Scholarship Laurel Award
The Peter Jennings Scholarship Laurel Award is given annually to up to 10 students who have earned their GED certificate from a CUNY Adult
Literacy/GED program and who plan to continue their education at a CUNY college. Students must be nominated by a teacher or staff member and
must provide a personal essay describing their journey to college. Winners each receive a $1,500 scholarship towards their CUNY college education.
Fannie Sanchez - With Honors
Linh Le fled her native Vietnam in 1978 because of political oppression
and poverty. Escaping on a boat with 3,000 other refugees, it would be
several months before she would step foot on solid ground again.
Eventually making her way to New York, she started a family while
working hard to support her family back in Vietnam. Later on, she even
opened her own business, a nail salon. But once her son went off to
college, she decided it was her turn to do the same. After taking ESL
classes and earning her GED certificate with the Adult Learning Center,
she enrolled at LaGuardia as a liberal arts major. Linh hopes to earn her
Associate’s Degree and continue her education in a program that
combines Eastern and Western approaches to nutrition and health.
“My goal is to transfer what I know to others—maybe even an immigrant
community,” says Linh.
“Being a LaGuardia student means there’s unlimited possibilities.”
When Fannie Sanchez started out at LaGuardia in the
GED program several years ago, she couldn’t have
imagined the journey she was embarking on. Today,
she is a resource specialist in the college’s Career
Development Center as well as a student in the
Paralegal Studies degree program, with aspirations to
become a lawyer in Human Rights and Global Justice.
Along the way, she has racked up some distinctions:
Dean List for fall 2005, fall 2007 and Spring 2008;
induction into the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor
Society in fall 2008; nominated to the 2009 Model
New York Senate project; elected as Student Advisory
Council Officer for Alpha Theta Phi 2009-10; elected
as Faculty Student Disciplinary Committee 2009-10;
and UN Club representative for the Delegation of 2010
(General Assembly Plenary Committee).
“My experiences at LaGuardia have been life changing
to the hundredth power. I started with little hope, and
now I have dreams beyond my imagination…Being
a LaGuardia student means there’s unlimited
possibilities.”
184 GED students were accepted
into a degree program at LaGuardia
Taking the Leap from Learning English
to Earning a College Degree
After spending a year in the CUNY Language Immersion Program, John Correa Solórzano
learned about the Accelerated Study in Associate Program (ASAP) and began taking college
classes in fall 2009. “In ASAP, I can find tutors, and I have an advisor who always is guiding
me,” says John.
“My goal in the Immersion Program was to learn English as soon as possible,” he recalls.
“However, once I started taking regular classes, my goal was to do well in school and keep
improving my English.” With a major in Liberal Arts/Math and Science and nine credits so far,
John is contemplating his educational future, which he hopes will include earning an
associate’s degree “with honors” and going on to a four year college.
my journey at LaGuardia, with the
‘‘Throughout ongoing support of the PDA, my GPA never
flounders below 3.5. The Program for Deaf Adults introduced
me to services that I didn't know existed, providing me with interpreters,
note-takers and captionists. LaGuardia's strong supportive program
for the deaf allows me to eagerly participate in classes, be on the SAC
committee, be an active member of the ASL club and be involved in
campus activities such as poetry readings and leadership conferences
without feeling I have a limitation. When I was having trouble
applying statistical concepts in the classroom, my counselor
at the
Luz and Javier Pumarejo
Mother and Son Learn Together at LaGuardia
Luz Pumarejo has two aims: for herself, to learn American Sign Language
(ASL) and pursue a graduate degree in education, and for her son, Javier,
to excel in reading and writing. To this end, the special education teacher
assistant is taking ASL classes in LaGuardia’s Program for Deaf Adults.
“I want to communicate better with my students who have hearing or
learning disabilities,” she says. Javier is enrolled in College for Children’s
Reading and Writing classes for Grade 2 as well as Spanish class. As a prekindergartener,
Luz brought Javier to the program to help him overcome
his shyness. Four years later, he still loves to come, and his mom says he
has improved academically during this time. So, while Luz works on her
career goals at LaGuardia, Javier “enjoys classes and friends” at College
