Screening
Description of the event:
VINCENT WHO? (2009, 40 minutes) - In
1982, at the height of anti-Japanese
sentiments, Vincent Chin was murdered
in Detroit by two white autoworkers who
said, "it's because of you mother** that
we're out of work." When the judged fined
the killers a mere $3,000 and three years
probation, Asian Americans around the
country galvanized for the first time to
form a real community and movement.
is documentary features interviews
with the key players at the time, as well as
a whole new generation of activists.
"Vincent Who?" asks how far Asian
Americans have come since then and how
far we have yet to go.
and Kirie Workshop by Mr. Shu Kubo
Description of the sakura planting:
is year will mark the centennial anniversary of
the sakura (cherry) trees from Japan to the U.S.
Many events are taking place in the U.S. to
commemorate this anniversary. As part of the
centennial celebration, the Consulate General of
Japan offered a gift of nursery sakura trees to
LaGuardia, which will be planted in the college
courtyard.
Mr. Shu Kubo is an award-winning kirie artist
who was appointed as a Special Advisor for
the Government of Japan in 2009. is workshop
traditional Japanese art. Mr. Kubo will
demonstrate how to change washi, a type of paper
made of fibers from the bark of trees, into a piece
of artwork by giving delicate fine cut lines with
Title: “You're Asian? You must be
smart!”: Stereotypes and Study habits
Description of the event:
e aim of this workshop is to discuss the
stereotype of "being a smart Asian". Stereotypes
are usually created because a number of people
seem to fit a general description, and then this
general description is applied to everyone in a
particular group. e stereotype that "All Asians
are smart" is more complex: it is a self-fulfilling
prophecy -- the description fits some Asians, but
more often Asian people work hard to fit the
description! Is this label appropriate when
Asians work hard to become successful? is
workshop will examine the stereotype that "All
Asians are smart" by asking two questions: (1) is
this stereotype accurate and (2) do Asian
students feel pressure to maintain this
stereotype?
