<strong>The</strong> Secretary of the Army has directed the U.S. Army Inspector General<br />

to conduct a review to determine the facts surrounding reports of civilian<br />

deaths near No Gun Ri (Nokuen-Ri), Republic of Korea, in July 1950.<br />

We encourage all persons with information on No Gun Ri, especially<br />

<strong>Korean</strong> <strong>War</strong> veterans who served with the 1st Cavalry Division in late July<br />

1950, to contact the U. S. Army Inspector General Agency. <strong>The</strong> Agency<br />

would like to reach as many veterans as possible who may have information<br />

to share about these events.<br />

Should any of your members wish to provide information on No Gun Ri,<br />

please encourage them to use the Toll Free Number 1-877-379-5596 to<br />

communicate with the U.S. Army Inspector General review team.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Secretary of the Army has asked me to provide regular updates to<br />

<strong>Veterans</strong>’ Organizations, as well as to the Congress, on the progress of this<br />

review. I conducted the first update for <strong>Veterans</strong>’ Service Organizations on<br />

November 22, 1999. <strong>The</strong> inspector General Review Team or my staff will<br />

be in periodic contact with you regarding future meetings.<br />

Finally, I would also like to reaffirm our commitment to honor the service<br />

and sacrifice of <strong>Korean</strong> <strong>War</strong> <strong>Veterans</strong>. <strong>The</strong>ir heroism in a struggle<br />

against aggression warrants an unremitting effort on the part of the<br />

Department of Defense to find and report the truth about No Gun Ri.<br />
