From the Head of School 

Dear Families and Friends, 

The ethnic, cultural, religious and geographic diversity present at Dwight-englewood is so 

exceptional that it sets us apart from almost any other independent school in the area. With 

this diversity comes the opportunity to meet and learn with people from incredibly different 

backgrounds. Just by being in a classroom with such diversity opens all of us up to a more 

global view of the world in which we live. The ability to share in a world that is truly “flat,” 

and where our children will need to know more how to leave their comfort zone and embrace 

all kinds of differences inspires me and has made me curious to not only see this diversity here 

at home, but to venture out and visit some of our global citizens in their own countries. 

This summer my wife Annette and our daughter Ali, along with pat Boig, Director of Development, 

and Sherronda oliver Brown, Director of Admissions, took an incredibly exciting 

voyage to visit our students and their families in Seoul, Beijing, Bangkok and Salamanca. It was 

an unforgettable, whirlwind two weeks that covered the globe, taking us through multiple time 

zones and cultures. We all learned so much from each other. our families were most gracious 

in helping to facilitate the logistics of the trip and we were deeply appreciative. And our alumni 

were happy to see us. In each country, we explored the history of the nation and the city we 

were in as well as what makes our students from each country so very special to our school. It 

is their world view and life experience which adds so much to the fabric of our School. We are 

educationally richer for having this global diversity in our students and their families. 

We also learned how small the world really is and how many similarities we all have regardless of 

our nationality. While we learned to say hello and thank you in four different languages, the sentiment 

behind the words always remained the same. We were truly happy to meet new people 

and experience new cultures and we will all carry a little bit of each country with us forever. 

All of our communities come together as one to support our School as indicated in this Annual 

Report. our School is better because of the contributions, both tangible and intangible, 

from our families, our alumni from as far back as the class of 1935, our grandparents, and our 

own faculty and staff. our network reaches far and wide because of what this institution has 

meant to so many.

From the President, 

Board of Trustees 

to The Dwight-englewood Community, 

Thank you, thank you, thank you. For the first time in the School’s history we have raised 

a record of over $997,000 in the Annual Fund. We are 30 percent up from our $773,000 

achievement only two years ago! It is thanks to this community—parents, grandparents, 

alumni, faculty, staff and friends that made this possible—in other words, all of you. The 

journey to get here was no small feat. It took a cadre of over 90 volunteers who worked tirelessly 

to reach out and explain the importance of Annual Fund in a School that is tuitiondriven. 

The message was heard, understood and supported as some gave for the first time, and 

others increased their already generous contributions. 

However, the true measure of how Dwight-englewood is doing is by the participation of more 

than three-quarters of the families here. Supporting the School so that Dr. De Jarnett and his 

administration can fulfill the Board’s vision of our School going forward speaks to the satisfaction 

parents feel with their students’ experiences. There are countless success stories whether 

in the classroom with a student who discovers a new passion, a teacher who comes to mentor 

a student and changes a life, a win on the sports field, a performance at Coffee House on a 

Friday night supported by friends, and the list goes on…. 

Dwight-englewood is a place that prioritizes the value of knowing each and every student and 

appreciating his or her own unique contributions. This is a community that is built by those 

who belong and not one that is simply joined. As countless alumni can attest, the foundation 

of their education did not begin in college, but well before during their years here when they 

learned how to learn, a skill that doesn’t stop in high school, but is a lifetime practice. our 

young alumni have shown their support, doubling the number of those who have given at the 

Young Alumni Head of School Society ($250 and up) in just the last year. 

We are fortunate to have a Board that is committed to long term growth and increasing academic 

excellence, as well as a visionary Head of School, who has spoken publicly about the future of 

education and the kind of School we need to be in a rapidly changing world. our students leave 

here well prepared to take on, “the challenges of a changing world and make it better.”

The Head of School Society 


The Head of School Society recognizes all gifts to the Annual Fund made during Dwight-Englewood 

School’s fiscal year of July 1 to June 30. Especially important are unrestricted gifts which help to 

bridge the gap between the real cost of a Dwight-Englewood education and the tuition we charge, thereby 

providing the critical margin of excellence so important to the continued success of our students, 

both inside and outside of the classroom. Members of the Society who give at the Councilor level and

Annual Fund 2011–12 


Annual Fund 2011–12 raised a record $997,292 in unrestricted gifts which represented a 

10 percent increase over last year and almost 30 percent over two years ago. These unrestricted 

gifts provide the margin of excellence needed to support the superior education offered at Dwight- 

Englewood and to bridge the gap between the actual cost of a Dwight-Englewood education and

Capital gifts are typically made with the future in mind. Donors may add to the permanent assets 

of Dwight-Englewood through an addition to bricks and mortar or to the financial strength of the 

School through an investment in endowment, the income of which will support Dwight-Englewood 

in perpetuity. Typically these gifts are made during capital campaigns and are payable over three 

to five years, but they may also be made through bequests or by a donor with an interest in

2012 Auction “A Night in Monte Carlo” 

“A Night in Monte Carlo,” Dwight-Englewood School’s Biennial Auction and Dinner Dance took 

place on Saturday, February 25, 2012 at Rockleigh Country Club. Under the capable leadership of 

co-chairs Jennifer Kang and Irina Kashan, this year’s event raised $375,000 for the benefit of our 

faculty and staff. Our auction was made possible by the support, encouragement and donations of

This year the Head of School Series was expanded to accommodate a very special fifth concert featuring 

renowned Metropolitan Opera guitarist Fred Hand. In addition, 315 East, our chamber group, 

featured two well-received performances featuring selections by Vaughan Williams, Ravel, Francaix 

and Schumann, and a performance of L’Histoire du Soldat by Stravinsky. Jazz Vistas took us back to 

the 70s’ with a wonderful performance of the classics. Their second show featured selections from 

the legendary recording engineer Rudy Van Gelder whose studio was in Englewood Cliffs. A beautiful 

on-campus sculpture exhibit was also added to the Series, with an opening reception that included 

a stimulating conversation with all the artists, as well as a slide show and tour of the work.

The Economics of Making a Gift 

Making a gift can be beneficial to both the donor and to Dwight-Englewood School. Our faculty and 

students benefit directly from gifts to the Annual Fund, projects funded through capital campaigns 

and the support that is derived from investment income on permanent endowment. From a tax 

perspective, giving to Dwight-Englewood can also be beneficial to our community. By considering 

the many different ways of making a gift, you can select a gift vehicle that best suits your needs 

and interests. Many times, with careful planning, a donor is able to make a more substantial gift 

and reap significant tax and estate planning benefits. 

Financial Flexibility in Making Your Gift 

Gifts Of Cash 

While there are many ways to give to Dwight-englewood 

School, contributions made by personal check, Visa, MasterCard, 

or American express make your gift immediately available to the 

School. electronic fund transfers allow your financial institution 

to transfer funds on a regular basis. A gift of cash entitles a donor 

to an income-tax deduction subject to tax-deductible limitations. 

The Development office is happy to schedule pledge installments 

by credit card or pledge payments if that suits the donor’s needs 

as well.

Gifts of appreciated stock may allow a donor to avoid capital 

gains tax in addition to the usual tax deduction for the 

contribution. Gifts of stock enable many Dwight-englewood 

constituents to contribute far more to the School than would
