THE GODS OF HYPERSPACE 145
"What's that?" Narcinko says.
About five feet away lies an eggplant-like lump of flesh that you had
not noticed. It sits on the colorful Persian carpet and does not move.
Narcinko stares at the fleshy lump and a shiver runs up his body.
"What the hell is it? What's happening here?"
"We were here to help rescue the president. He was abducted by 4-D
creatures."
"How do you know this? That's classified."
"Narcinko, can you find me a strong bag and lots of rope?"
He eyes you suspiciously. "We heard rumors about the 4-D creatures.
We're not telling the public much or else they may panic. The White
House is officially closed today."
"I think I can save Sally and the president. Get me a bag and rope."
Narcinko dashes away and returns with a large burlap bag and about
six feet of rope. "I got this from the gardner's closet."
You take the bag. "Excellent."
You slowly make your way over to the fleshy blob on the Persian carpet.
Stooping down, you place the bag next to the blob and very gently
push the blob into the bag. Narcinko brings you the rope and you tie the
bag tightly shut.
As you look into Narcinko's face, you see his mouth open and close
spasmodically. Why? What could be wrong?
You turn, and see that the lump of flesh is now out of the bag. It must
have escaped quickly without making a sound. Your eyes had been off the
bag for only a second or two. The rope is still tied tightly around the
opening.
Narcinko looks closer. "It's different."
You nod. There are three pieces of it now, like pink hot dogs. Narcinko
unties the knotted rope around the bag. He slowly places his
hand inside as if he is about to plunge into ice-cold water. "Nothing's
in here."
"I should have expected this. I think the creature is stuck in our world
and wants to leave. This is just a cross section of him, a solid cross section
that is stuck in our 3-D world." You explain some of the same things you
have been telling Sally. "If I stick my foot in the surface of a pond, 2-D
inhabitants on the pond's surface would see only a circle or an ellipse
depending on what angle I intersect their world. If a 2-D creature tried to
trap me in his world by tying a rope around me, I could withdraw my
