<strong>Innophos</strong>, Inc. Toothpaste Function Humectants: the primary function of humectants as part of the liquid phase is to retain moisture which provides good “mouth feel” and maintains and attractive glossy appearance when the paste is exposed to air. Binder: is essential to toothpaste for stabilization against separation of the liquid and solid phases. Gums such as Tragacanth, Gum Arabic have been used. Colloids and CMC (carboxymethyl cellulose) are also used.
<strong>Innophos</strong>, Inc. Toothpaste Function Preservatives: natural and synthetic water dispersions of organic binders are subject to microbial or mold attack. Small amounts of preservative agents may be added to the paste. Detergents: lowers the surface tension and the improves the sudsing action in the mouth. Improves mouth feel. Flavoring: probably represents the greatest single factor in consumer acceptance. Care should be taken in selecting balanced blends of different essential oils.
