Toothpaste Function
Humectants: the primary function of
humectants as part of the liquid phase is to retain
moisture which provides good “mouth feel” and
maintains and attractive glossy appearance when
the paste is exposed to air.
Binder: is essential to toothpaste for stabilization
against separation of the liquid and solid phases.
Gums such as Tragacanth, Gum Arabic have been
used. Colloids and CMC (carboxymethyl cellulose)
are also used.
Innophos, Inc.
Toothpaste Function
Preservatives: natural and synthetic water
dispersions of organic binders are subject to
microbial or mold attack. Small amounts of
preservative agents may be added to the paste.
Detergents: lowers the surface tension and
the improves the sudsing action in the mouth.
Improves mouth feel.
Flavoring: probably represents the greatest
single factor in consumer acceptance. Care
should be taken in selecting balanced blends
of different essential oils.
Innophos, Inc.
Toothpaste Function
Sweeteners: improves taste and enhances the flavor qualities
of the toothpaste. Use at very low concentrations.
Water: purified water should be used to produce the desired
toothpaste quality
Polishing Agents: the type of polishing agent selected will,
to a very large degree, determine the qualities of consistency,
stability and polishing action in the formulated paste. These
qualities are best realized when 35 to 50% of the weight of the
paste is a phosphate polishing agent.
Anti-caries Agents: these agents are generally
formulated in dentifrice at 1000 ppm fluoride ion.

Innophos, Inc.
Toothpaste Quality
A. Viscosity - binder level, solids to liquid ratio,
humectant to water ratio.
B. Appearance - should be air free, binder should
be free of particles, have gloss and homogeneity.
C. Flavor - minty flavor is popular, control amount
of sweetener.
D. Detergent - minimum amount to obtain desired foaming.
E. Mouth Feel - paste should not be “sticky”, paste should
have “good body”
F. Stability - storage and compatibility tests should
be done.
