GREEN STAR
July 20-21: The Gull Lake Star Fleet hosted the 2002, 4th District Green Star, July 20 – 21. Ten sailors from five fleets
participated in the event. The racing was very close as the sailors saw varied conditions throughout the four race series.
The championship came down to the final race, which saw the strongest wind of the regatta. Congratulations to all the
sailors for a job well done. The Gull Lake Country Club did a wonderful job hosting the event, as everyone had a great time.

PAW PAW LAKE
PAW PAW LAKE POTPOURRI
May 11-12: The 2002 Paw Paw Lake Pot Pourri, 4th District Opening Regatta, held on May 11 & 12, 2002 provided great
close and intense racing. We were pleased to have a skipper and crew from Michigan State University attend in preparation
for the collegiate Star regatta to be held in Springfield in September. With their first attempt in the Star, they placed!
Conditions were light to medium Saturday with use of the full length of the lake, and a perfect wind came up at the finish of
the fourth race to provide an exhilarating blast reach back to the club, it put a smile on everyone’s faces, including the
college sailors who want more taste of that. Sunday brought more light to medium air with the beats and reaches across the
width of the lake. We had the Race Committee of Mary Murphy, PRO, John Simon, and Barbara Birmingham. Friday night
the club provided dinner for the sailors at no-charge to show their support for sailing. Saturday and Sunday breakfast was
included. Saturday night we tried something new this year, we all went to a local restaurant, which worked exceedingly well
for all. The final race was determined by place of finish for all, McCarthy and Rickard commenced a tacking dual on the final
leg, with about 25 tacks, with Rickard controlling all the way to the finish line.

TULIP TIME TUNE UP
May 18-19: Gull Lake Star Fleet hosted its 49th annual Tulip Tune-up regatta May 18-19 in the coldest temperatures in
decades. That didn’t stop 25 dedicated sailors of the Great Lakes region from participating in what would turn out to be one
of the finest Tulip Tune-up’s in recent years. The weekend kicked off with the nine-hole golf scramble on Friday morning.
Racing started on Saturday morning in record cold temps. The wind was fresh out of the north 12 to 15 m.p.h. This north
wind allowed the race committee to set up a long course using the length of the lake. Even with the long windward / leeward
course the competition was tight throughout the race. Race two saw very close racing as well. In a building, backing
breeze, the fleet got off to another clean start. Race three was sailed in the strongest wind of the day. The wind was a
steady 15 m.p.h. with gusts up to 20 m.p.h. With four races complete and no throw outs, Tom Londrigan Jr. and Ashley
Boeyen won their first Tulip Tune-up. Rob Maine and Kevin Murphy finished second. Joe Londrigan and Jon VanderMolen
finished third. Pat Londrigan and Dave Jackson finished fourth. Mike Blackwood and Tom VanderMolen Jr., the top Gull
Lake boat, finished fifth. The 2002 Tulip Tune-up concluded with lunch and awards on the lawn. The club did a wonderful
job of taking care of the sailors and their families, and the locals again showed incredible hospitality making everyone feel at
home and comfortable on beautiful Gull Lake.
