Proud Mom: The mother of this unidentified COD nursing student has joy
written all over her face as she embraces her daughter during the pinning
ceremony held at the Annenberg Center for Health Sciences, just before the
semester break. The largest class of RN students ever, 42 men and women,
were pinned in a poignant ceremony at Annenberg, located on the campus of
Eisenhower Medical Center. The ceremony celebrated the sacrifices made by
the graduating students. Superintendent-President Dr. Maria Sheehan
welcomed the graduates. In an eloquent speech she recalled meeting a
number of nurses who cared for her parents and father-in-law during the
recent period when all three died of natural causes. Ironically, all of the
nurses had been trained at COD. She told the graduates she was comforted
knowing her loved ones received the best professional care at the end of
their lives and praised the new RN's for carrying on the tradition. [More
Swearing In Ceremony: The DCCD Board of Trustees swore in two returning members and one
new one at its December meeting. Former Chairman Jim Gray, right, led the three in reciting the oath
of office. They are (standing, from left): Chuck Hayden, Dr. Bonnie Stefan and the newly elected
Dr. Merle "Bud" Miller. Seated at left is the other trustee, Ray House. The annual board
organization meeting followed, at which Dr. Stefan was named Chairman for the coming year.
First Insider of New Semester: Welcome back for the spring semester! This is the first issue
of the Insider, the newsletter for faculty and staff at COD. We publish this online newsletter
each week when classes are in session. Last year, 29 issues were produced, featuring well
over 200 photographs of faculty, staff and students. This year we are on track to exceed the
number of photographs.
We attempt to promote and publicize all COD-related events, including success stories that
include faculty members being asked to speak, present papers, being published, or any other
professional accomplishments. Don't hesitate to send us news, tips and suggestions via email
or by phone (ext. 589).
Deadline for submissions is Thursday before publication, at 5 p.m. A link is sent to all campus
and adjunct faculty email addresses when the latest edition of the Insider is posted online,
usually on Tuesdays.
Latest Enrollment Figures as Semester Gets Under Way: The huge increase in enrollment
fees imposed by the California Legislature last fall continues to have an impact of College of
the Desert enrollments for the spring semester, but the picture has improved dramatically over
last fall. In Fall '04, enrollments at COD were down more than 5%, but as of Tuesday
morning, on the second day of school, the numbers had improved. The latest figures show
26,539 enrollments, a drop of 2.3% over the same day last spring. Enrollments are down by
about 600, according to a report released by the Office of Institutional Research.
COD's pilot "Intersession" program in January drew nearly 700 enrollments, which will be
recorded as part of Spring '05. However, college officials are still concerned about the
downward trend. "We hoped to match last spring with our regular spring enrollments," said
Institutional Research Coordinator Matthew Breindel. "It doesn't look like we quite made it,
but the figures are a big improvement from a month ago." Three weeks ago, enrollments
were lagging behind last year by about 5.6%, he said. COD expanded its marketing program,
installed a telephone hotline to answer enrollment questions, and opted to keep the
Admissions and Records Office open late (until 8 p.m.) when classes started to accommodate
students wishing to add classes during the "late registration" period now ongoing. Earlier,
steps to ease the process for students were introduced. The cumulative efforts appear to have
had a positive effect.
State-imposed fee increases two years in a row, a whopping 146 percent jump, brought an
end last fall to several years of steady increases in enrollment at the college. Enrollments at
community colleges are also down statewide.
Chancellor To Visit COD Campus Feb. 9: COD will host California Community College
Chancellor Mark Drummond and about a dozen college CEO's from around the region at a
luncheon and tour set for Feb. 9. The 11:30 luncheon is invitation only, at the direction of the
Chancellor's office. A one-hour meeting at 1 p.m. is also limited to the Chancellor, the
CEO's, and invited guests. At 2 p.m., the Chancellor and his entourage will take a tour of the
campus and hear a series of reports from COD administrators on the state of the college.
Drummond, appointed Chancellor a year ago, is making the rounds of key California
community colleges to learn more about college concerns from administrators and board
members.
Marlene Louchheim is a testimony to what it means to be a woman in the arts, often
navigating the choppy waters of making art while being committed to family and
community,” said Wil Kohl, Marks director. “It is a story about patience, timing, and balance,
a story about the lover, the mother, and the artist, and how a woman born in 1932, at a time
when women were not encouraged to commit themselves to a career in art, much less to call
to the great task of nurturing a family.”
Holding the Dream: The Art of Marlene Louchheim shows through photography and text how
Louchheim’s awareness of herself as a woman within the family inspired a fascination with
by Dr. Maria Sheehan
Superintendent/President
Welcome Back, Faculty! A lot of things have been going on
since you went on holiday in December. The Intersession by all
accounts went very well, with nearly 90% of the seats filled in some
20 classes. We are still studying the results to determine what fate
awaits this pilot program.
Many of you got the chance to participate in last week's Technology
Institute and more training is available year around, including open
lab times for individual training. Be sure to take advantage of this
opportunity to learn more about Web Advisor, the Class Roster,
Power Point and so much more.
Our new homepage -- the IS staff calls it the Portal -- will be officially opened at the March
Board meeting; watch for information on how to use it. It is a great opportunity to promote
events, start dialogues on important issues, store historical files in a central location, and so
forth.
Our new phone system is fully operation, now that installation has been completed in 90
classrooms. The emergency response system is in place and the external broadcast system is
nearly finished. Many of the suggestions for the current system came directly from
discussions by faculty members in College Council.
We've been anticipating and preparing for it, and now the time is almost here -- the
Accreditation Team will visit COD Mar. 15-17. Special thanks to Rick Rawnsley and Chris
Nelson and of course to Dr. Gari Browning for her leadership. Our self study was recently
completed and we are ready.
The bond construction project is entering its first exciting phase. We are looking at various
know which buildings will be completed in the first phase. We will build all of them at the
same time in order to shorten the the timeframe for getting these vitally necessary buildings
fully occupied. The Nursing complex, the Public Safety Academy, a new Student Learning
Commons and the Technology Classroom Complex are targeted to be constructed first. At the
same time, we will begin building a new building in the north end of the campus to house the
COD Alumni Association; it will be next to the new site for the Street Fair, which will move
to the northwest corner of the campus later this year.
An historic occasion is set to take place Feb. 9, when COD will be visited for a few hours by
new California Community College Chancellor Mark Drummond and his entourage. They
will be joined by about a dozen of my fellow CEO's from various regional community
colleges. The Chancellor is here to meet with COD administrators and board members to
ascertain college concerns so the Chancellor can best represent our colleges at the state level.
We had a wonderful dinner tribute for retired Trustee Jackie Suitt and raised money for a new
scholarship program that will bear her name. The campus community is invited to say
farewell to Jackie on Feb. 15 at the board room in the administration building. Be sure to
Desert Hoopsters Cause Stir In Foothill Conference: Both the mens' and women's
basketball teams are nearly perfect in Foothill Conference hoop action after the first month of
play. The men's unit, led by Coach Chris Mozga, and Coach Ty Thomas' women, hold
identical 7-1 conference won-loss marks. Owing to non-conference tournaments in
November and December, their overall records are vastly different, however. The men are
19-5 overall since November; the women are 10-10. Still, both teams are at or near the top in
the Foothill Conference.
The women beat Cerro Coso Monday night, 63-59, led by the scoring of Ebonie Dorsey with
13 points and Mya Ross , who added 11. The Roadrunners host Victor Valley here
Wednesday at 5 p.m.
The men's team beat Rio Hondo 91-79 Friday, led by Indio graduate Earl Isaacson , who
scored 36 points and had 12 rebounds. The Roadrunners won a crucial league game last
Wednesday, defeating San Bernardino Valley 71-50. Isaacson's 27 points helped bury SBVC
to put COD in sole possession of first place in the conference. COD hosts Victor Valley at 7
p.m. this Wednesday.
